I used to work in the Education system in Australia.
Between public and private schools there is a difference the way they 'teach' the student and the agenda each as.
Private schools will spoon feed everything to the students to improve the schools overall results so they can attract more students $$$
The public system is 50/50 if you find a school that's a 'leading school' basically in bed with the gov with funding then the education is better. By rule of thumb pollies (MP's) in state gov will send their children to a state school to show the public that state schools are good, these schools will get extra funding and assistance and will be on the first of the list if anything is needed.
I would prefer my son to go to a good well funded state school over a private school anyday. At least they won't hold his hand and spoon feed him like a rich dummy.

...and how exactly is knowing the first 10 ammendments soppused to help you get through in the real world?

seriously who the hell has pointed a gun at you and asked you to name the time that the civil war took place?!

There were plenty of americans of african decent who had guns pointed in their general direction, among other weapons, who were forced to work as wait for it....wait for it in case you didn't go to school either...slaves.

A pretty important historical event in america's recent history but I guess you don't think so.

Yea, I'm 22 often wondering how so many people my age ate lead-based paint chips. I thought they banned lead in paint.

I'm sure American kids know more about Kim Kardashian than any British or Chinese student. Who needs history when you have important things to worry about like how Kim will botch her next marriage or who's next on Dancing With the Stars.

im a senior in high school and im pretty sure more than 60% of my class could answer these questions correctly. i do think though that schools are not challenging their students more. my school is a nationally recognized school for our test scores and acheivments and we are straight up slackers. we get by doing the bare minimum. blame the generation teaching us..

Everyone deserves to be blamed, especially the individuals.

The generations that taught you only taught you according to the ciriculum. It's your job to learn, and it's your peers job to teach themselves as well. After high school, nobody is going to hold your hand, and whining won't keep you from failure.

Every kid who I knew that disrupted class just to whine, "What does this crap ever teach us, anyways? I'll never need to know what perpendicular means in my life!" in basic Algebra that I knew is now still in their home town, flipping patties or being a petty pot dealer and wearing graphic T-shirts. And know what? Maybe they deserve it for disturbing the other 80% of class that wanted to just get on with their day.

QQ America - Pull yourself up by your metaphorical boot-straps just like your ancestors did. Or just give up and leave ruin and dispair to the abundance of children that were born into the world because someone was too devolved to figure out how to use a rubber.

There was a period when a midwestern taco joint munked up everytime I ordered...always one adult and the rest were punks. And no, the adult was not the manager, he was a sudbuster. And lately cashiers have been giving me too much change back, which is the main reason I LIKE TO PAY IN CASH. They are called CASHiers for a reason. Cards have there place, but not for a burrito supreme, that I never ordered in the first place. Yeah, America has officially been dumb-downed.

Did you go to college?

It's advice, not advise.

And what did your college get you?
Absolutely nothing but a pompous attitude and a false feeling of entitlement.

I went to a University and a Technical college - for a grand total 4 years - and I can easily say the University-based information was almost useless while comparing the two. Congratulations on your English 2 General Education Credits.

Did your high school tell you that you should take U classes?

pointless survey conducted, on even more pointless and FAKED historical facts

Your right, but when you can't spell properly enough to make a post on an internet site then you miss out on jobs and then end up living at an occupy event in some city because a company thinks your uneducated.

Um... because the abolition of slavery is relevant to the american civil war, that's why.

Which you obviously don't think is an important milestone in the history of the country which is the subject of this thread.

EDIT: So far you are doing a decent job of looking stupid without any effort from me. Feel free to edit your own post to make it readable, correct your grammar and formatting and to post something on topic.

indoctrination is the agenda in the public school system,..and...pimping is the agenda of the prison system(most prisons are owned privately..receiving i was told by the wardens in our unit $80 dollars a day per head, using a fraction of that to keep you breathing ) .another example is
we learn Greek mythology in the sixth grade but don't speak as opened minded about the ancient Hebrews and the everlasting legacy., archeological records, and massive evidence.prophecies being fulfilled right now.

this will be the generation who accepts the antichrist,we are seeing a more dependent generation
think about how their kids will be, say when their twenty years old. completely monitored.and influenced by a computer

into some weird a$$ lady gaga or jay z satanic fad.of that time..i just let my mind wonder, knowing there is nothing new under the sun....

im 22 so i plan to see this in my life time

the american civil war was not about slavery, that was the casus belli.
however that is advanced knowledge

Casus belli is a Latin expression meaning the justification for acts of war. Casus means "incident", "rupture" or indeed "case", while belli means bellic ("of war").

I read that article and that was shocking. I've been out of school for like 6 years. The survey conducted on the Oklahoma high school students, the questions they asked, I didn't know the answer to the following:

What is the supreme law of the land?
How many justices are there on the Supreme Court?

That's it. And most of this I knew BEFORE high school.

EDIT: Where in any post of mine did I say that the american civil war was about slavery and that's how it all started?

What makes you think I don't understand casus belli? I was educated in Australia and New Zealand, mate. What about you?

The subject of the thread is USA high school students that don't know things like basic geography and history. It was mentioned in another member's post that many are not aware of when the american civil war took place. The only thing that should be argued is why or why not this should be relevant to a high school student in the USA.

I think it should be and I have explained why.

it did.
it also displaced any notion of semi independent states, aka home rule.
but saying that was why the civil war started is another thing.
based on this, hitler was a benevolent leader, who just wanted to right injustices to german people.
i feel no shame towards slavery.
firstly i wasn't there.
secondly it still exists.
thirdly most of the slaves were sold by african warlords and arabic traders.
fourthly it is unimportant in todays world.

i suggest everyone get over it, and view it in historical context.
there is no shame in history.
it it what it is.
human nature.
american indians also displaced people living in america, etc.
no point in choosing a specific event.
once again, human nature.

So that assessment is just based on performance in... US history? I took one course in US history in high school.. that's it.

History is not part of any SAT or ACT criteria. People just tend to forget this stuff unless they actually purse it in college.

The article is way too sensationalist..

I am from the Netherlands and I can say with all certainty that things aren't that much better over here. This dumbification happens here too. I remember that we studied the Vietnam war and good grief, they had omitted so many important aspects, such as the Pentagon Papers scandal.
