Did this make anybody else feel sick? We just watched (time-delayed) the ball drop in New York, because they don't seem to be showing any local events, here in Phoenix, as we ticked over to the new year, and the utter rampant commercialism made me feel seriously ill. The worst of all was the neon "Toshiba" sign crowning the top of the clock in Times Square. How sick is that? It would have been bad enough if it was an American corporation, but good grief.

Yeah, but it wasn't the neon - it was the fact the number one thing being shown on our TV, over and over, was "Toshiba", a non-US company.

I imagine for quite a few years now that timesquare has probably been lit by foreign tech, broadcasted by foreign tech and probably sponsored by foreign companies... there's no surprise to me..

I can't say I like it.. but blame corporate america for that.. they are the ones making the deals that allow it to be possible.

If it has to be so obviously commercialized, I would prefer that at least at one of our biggest national holidays, we would at least have American companies, rather than non-US companies given preference for the top spots. Just another clear signal that all that matters at the top is the almighty dollar.

Good night, and happy new year, folks.

Gotta agree with that, New Years is not a national holiday, if you are going to have a problem with the commercialization of a holiday....I'm on board, but it is all or nothing....You know what I mean? Complain about ANY company logo being that blatant or don't complain...Because when I was a kid looking over dick clark's shoulder, there was just a ball....That is what I want to see.

I am not sure what is not been obvious about the commercialization of America.

Sounds like to me that you are in denial about the issue, and wish to remain in that state of mind.

No, but really. Why watch TV? lol
One of the main staples of USA TV at least is commercials, which include a lot of foreign car commercials.
