The U.S. House has passed a resolution that calls on the government of Turkey to end repression of the remnants of ancient Christian and pre-Christian civilizations and return the property taken from them.

House Resolution 306, spearheaded by Representative Ed Royce (R-California) and Howard Berman (D-California), was recently passed by a huge majority, calling on the State Department to raise the issue. Aram Hamparian of the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) tells OneNewsNow the persecution has been going on for many centuries.

"This includes the Armenian Church, the Assyrian Church, the Greek Church, the Syriak Church -- many of the Christian communities that have been present in Anatolia since biblical times and even before the time of Christ," he explains.

The more serious persecution occurred early last century.

"They were largely seized during the period of the Armenian genocide, which started in 1915, which was an effort to wipe out the entire Christian population of the Ottoman Empire. And it very nearly succeeded in doing that," the ANCA executive director laments. "Armenians and Syrians, Greeks, Pontians and others represented over two million of the citizens of the Ottoman Empire, and today they represent less than one percent."

About a million and a half people were killed, and now only a handful of churches exist, compared to thousands that were in Turkey prior to the alleged genocide. Turkey denies the latter and has lashed out at the House for passing the resolution.

But despite opposition from Turkey's prime minister and the Obama administration, ANCA chairman Ken Hachikian says the adoption "represents a powerful victory for religious freedom."

It will be very interesting to see the effect that House Resolution 306 has, and what, if any remnants of ancient Christian and pre-Christian civilizations are released.

Not that I don't think this is a good idea, but WTH are we doing trying to dictate another sovereign country what to do?

Good to know the "house" is working on important legislation that will have a huge and positive effect on the present state of the country they profess to represent.I only add this to remind each of you that we are paying these people for this. Good value for your buck?

Hmm.. This coming from the same government that sits back and does nothing while other religious/ethnic/cultural groups have been moved off, oppressed, and had their land stolen. Gotta love the hypocricy.

What the hell business does our House of Representatives have meddling in Turkey's religious history? Do they not understand that they represent a certain district of US Citizens, and their job is to look out for the best interest of those particular citizens. Nothing more, nothing less.

If this were a private business, and I hired 400 people to oversee 400 districts with certain projects and responsibilities, and a couple hundred of them went off on some tangent to dictate what some other company was doing, then I would fire them and replace their asses!

Why don't we fire Congress and replace their asses with someone that will actually do what they are paid to do?

We all know that Turkey is moving into a new darker age of Islamism.

Someone actually thinks that asking them to play nice is going to stop that? You've been FUNDING the Islamist Uprising. Oh sorry, the "Arab Awakening." The only people who need to wake the frack up are us.

The answer lies in this bit...

House Resolution 306, spearheaded by Representative Ed Royce (R-California) and Howard Berman (D-California),...

Some lobby group has gone to these guys and said "if you push this, we in return will offer you ..."
So what have they got? Huge wads of cash? Promises of a lucrative job after retirement from politics?

Wonder if republicans are going to sit here and cheer this or call it what it is.. A waste of government time and funds.

Who wants to take wagers? Im betting they'll drop all the big government talk when it involves their religion.

Awesome! I'm sure a resolution demanding that Israel give the Palestinians their land back will be coming down the pike any day now.

Right? Right?
