It's funny, about 6 years ago....Mexico was the "hot-spot"...now, it's: "Unsafe"? hahahahah Yeah, it's "unsafe", because the U.S. is BROKE and they need every penny spent, at home; and not abroad.
You want to talk "unsafe"...how about: Irvington, NJ...Compton, CA...Detroit, MI....Harlem, NY...do i need to continue?
Are you people 'afraid' to live life....or what? If you're gonna die, in a shoot-out in Mexico, that's how it was MEANT to be. If you're gonna die, while plugging in the toaster; that's how it was MEANT to be. However it is, you're going to die, there is NOTHING you can do to change that DETERMINED DATE and CAUSE OF DEATH!!!
LIVE YOUR LIFE PEOPLE........YOU ONLY GET 1 CHANCE! Stop listening to the "news reports"! They're only trying to RULE BY FEAR!

sorry, but i can't help but comment on some of this.
Mexico isn't worth the trip to the bus station to buy a ticket to even go there. If youre an american and you go there, youre on your own, literally you will be beyond help. Mexico is truly a Godless country if there's ever been one.
it's obvious that you've never been.
first off, here in the southwest those coming north has actually dropped quite a bit. the economy sucks and they no there are not many jobs available.
the drag is that now most coming north are the criminal element, not workers.
also, you mention guarding our continent, that would include both mexico and canada.
the only thing i do agree with is that if you visit you are on your own.
this is why i've replied a few times already regarding the differences between the north and south.

...Just after taking office a few years ago Mexican President Felipe Calderón ramped-up the War on Drugs and things have gotten dangerous and violent in places. Yes, the drug war here has the same effect it does in the US, our governments use it to scare the people and make them feel insecure and wanting police protection (moreso in the US than here, BTW). It makes the people glad to give up whaterver freedoms and privacies they had left so they can protect DuPont, Kimberly-Clarke paper mills, and Big Pharma from the competition of a hemp industry. So those fat cats and greedy bastards can gorge themselves it makes me glad to see street violence (more in the US than here in Mexico, BTW) and people living scared and insecure to carry-out that agenda. [/sarcasm] ....
It is no surprise to read a number of knee-jerk responses to the media stories, after all they are just reacting the way the media wishes them to do. There are much greater agendas beyond the propoganda. Yes, Mexico has oil and natural resources that we are just wasting on... Mexicans. The US has every desire to invade, bring us ;law and order American-style, and put these resources to other use....

I drove a truck for 4 years and that included Canada and Mexico so don't go telling me i have never been there. Try having some mexicans open up the back of your trailer when you come to a stop and start throwing your load out on the street where they have people in pick ups waiting to load what they throw out. They were literally looting my truck as i was driving down the road.

Intrepid, your not living up to your name. if you want to see Mexico, get on a plane and go. Of course it has its dangers, but Mexico city for example is no more dangerous that Washington DC. (Fact from the UN).
The point that every one needs to know is how to travel intelligently. Of course unless you have reason you don't go on holiday to Juarez, But Mexico is soo much more than just the northern states.
When you travel, keep a low profile, don't the the quintessential american, Use common sense, and I believe you will greatly enjoy the experience.

There has already been drug cartel violence in Cancun, Acapulco, etc ... just not directly directed against tourists. But like you said, it's only a matter of time.
The then police chief of Cancun, Mauro Tello, was murdered in February 2009. The deputy chief of police in Playa del Carmen was shot and killed by gunmen in 2008.
