Taking what's not yours is called stealing. Yes there was a time when water didn't cost you anything but guess what that time no longer exist in the city. If the water only cost the OP a penny it's his/her responsibility to pay that bill therefore his/her right to determine who can get the water they have to pay each month. Regardless to what these people's reasoning for being on his/her property getting water, whether it's in the burbs or the heart of the city, they were wrong. Folks please don't condone behavior you know in your heart you wouldn't want done to you irregardless to how much the water cost or the group these people are assumed to be a part of, stealing is stealing.

How many times are OWS supporters going to defend the "one isolated incident"???

These "isolated incidents" or this "that is just one guy" scenarios are starting to add up really fast...and it will start to define the movement.

In my opinion it doesn't even have much to do with OWS.

It's about how some humans think they own everything and will deny others simply because it makes them feel superior.

About how some people think that water, the most necessary and basic resource of life, is a object that can be used for profit to make others submit to your will.

It's aqua-imperialism.

It's not about the water...it's about being respectful of other peoples property.

OWS seems to lack basic manners.

Water is a necessity for life to exist.

Therefore water cannot be stolen UNLESS it denies another human to their right to drink water.

Only at this point is it actually stealing.

FUnny, imo, I believe the OP is whining and crying over a situation that could easily be solved if you walk into a building and find the bathroom faucet

Water is the property of all human beings since if they don't have it, they DIE.

You can only claim legit theft when they deny you to your own right to water.

Not because you think you own all 5000 gallons and want to hold it against everyone to make yourself feel economically superior.

Here's the kicker, folks...

If anyone came to my house and asked for water, I wouldn't hesitate telling them they can have all they wanted.

on the other hand, if they were on my property taking it without asking, I'd be more than a little put out.

There are ways things are done in all societies and ways in which they're not done.

You go get your $1.25 back man! You're absolutely right, those arrogant little punks stole maybe just over a dollar from you. Wtf is that? A whole dollar! If this was the 60s that dollar would've been worth twenty of today's dollars. Right now it's like 3 cents per dollar.
Tell them you demand your payment in silver! One silver dollar, NOW!

The point is greed. You drew a line in the sand and said, "MY SAND!" Are you surprised that they told you to go to hell?

Wow...you aren't helping the image of OWS at all.

And I was almost back to neutral on OWS....but you guys keep giving me more and more reasons to distance myself more and more.

I am walking up the street and see 2 dirtyish looking guys filling 4 giant water bottles
This costs money and they aren't the ones paying for it.
Who is the one paying for the water? Are we to assume that it is you? Would be nice of you to clarify.

BTW, water isn't that expensive but getting permission is the polite thing to do.

I don't know where you live, but my son has a 300$ water bill in the summer in Tx. So it can be expensive. We have a well and it is costly pumping water with electricity we can hardly afford the electric bill. So it all depends.

This is pathetic though.

Humans denying other humans to water?

Calling the cops?

Wow....humanity is selfish and heartless these days.

Humans should never have to ask for water, it's a human right.
That water belongs to everyone, stop being aqua-imperialists.

Hello? wake the "fK" up... Somebody works to pay for the convenience of:the tap; the maintenance; filtering; pumping; and plumbing;
The entitled earth children have all the"free water" they want walking down to the hudson river. That's why i don't support this crap.

All they have to do is ask which implys: "Sir ; I know it's not mine for the taking ; would you be so good as to allow me to partake of the benefits of some of your work.
And
it gives the "giver" the opportunity to feel good inside and be recognized for their "contribution". Payment enough mostly.
It costs the "begger" nothing except a little humility.

Taking is just rude; brutish and a violent assertion of: ME! I DESERVE! YOU CAN'T DENY ME!

Not to be all political, but that is the point that the ones making political statements are saying.

The fact that it was indeed his water. The actual value is not the issue but ownership is. Since the water is his, he could give it away (charity), sell it (capitalism), have it com stocked--which was the case here (communism), ask people for their opinion like here and let the people determine how his water will be used (pure democracy) or inform the authorities and let them handle it (representative democracy). Of course he could just set up a chair and a shotgun and shoot water thieves (vigilantism).

Informing the police was the case is the "American Way" so to speak. But com stocking your water is justified as "you are being petty" or "it's a redistribution of water wealth" or some other socialistic mantra.

Personally my own motto actually is "Never refuse another man a drink of water, for it is something we all need and if you have then share it" which falls under charity (and what was attracted my attention to this thread) but caught stealing water and being both rude and indignant about it to me makes them less than a man in my eyes. In fact it makes them a thief and not worthy of charity.

OP, time to take the handle off the spigot it would seem. The amount of work needed to turn on the water just might be beyond their effort. Maybe suggest to your neighbors to do the same.

For those condemning such thoughts, consider this: All peaceful movements have to be embraced by a larger audience in order to grow. The actions of a few that sour public opinion only hamper your efforts to bring others on board. Surely the water theft was not the action of agent water-teurs.

Yes water is a necessity but if you are taking from someone's faucet without their permission is stealing.

I'll let you in on a little secret.

When I was a kid, like 10 years old...

All of us kids on the block would just walk up to random people's yards , turn on the water hose, and take drinks.
We didn't ask anyone, we just went and took a drink.

I bet most folks would think we were thieves.

Nope, just kids out playing and getting thirsty.

No one EVER got angry or said anything against such practices.

It is pretty sad to see everyone attacking the OP
when the OP would of had no beef if OWS goons
did not take what was not there's then cuss the OP out.

Bird of a feather flock together.

OWS are in *solidarity* with each other
and if one gets hurt THEY ALL get hurt.

So it would seem if some of them steal all of them steal.

How about the ass hole making you pay for the most abundant resource on earth?

You are free to go drink out of any lake or river that you wish.

But treating water kind of costs some money...how dare they make us pay pennies for clean treated water

Not always.

When I lived in West Texas water was ultra-expensive. I was paying 300$ a month for a water bill even though I would only do laundry once or twice and only take 3-4 showers in a whole month.

It was that expensive.

Also, that water had to be piped in from hundreds of miles away because there is no decent groundwater in that geographic location.

There are some places where water is extremely scarce, and ultra-expensive.

But no one ever got mad that I took a drink from their water hose...
