Kalle Lasn

Biography
Kalle Lasn is the driving intellectual force behind the anti-corporate Adbusters Media Foundation.

In his writings, Lasn rails against the modern world and the progress that has made everyone’s life better. “The aggregate level of American life fulfillment peaked in 1957, and with a couple of brief exceptions, it’s been downhill from there,” he writes in his book Culture Jam: How to Reverse America's Suicidal Consumer Binge -- and Why We Must. Lasn calls the car “arguably the most destructive product we humans have ever produced.”

Lasn’s utopia is far from that of most Americans. He recommends “Not just a carbon tax, but a global across-the-board pricing system.” An example of life in this brave new world? “Your private automobile will cost you, by some estimates, around $100,000. And a tankful of gas, $250.”

The Adbusters Media Foundation (AMF) is a not-for-profit, anti-consumerist organization founded in 1989 by author/activist Kalle Lasn and wilderness cinematographer Bill Schmalz in Vancouver, British Columbia. The Foundation describes itself as "a global network of artists, activists, writers, pranksters, students, educators and entrepreneurs who want to advance the new social activist movement of the information age.

According to journalist Aaron Klein, the September 17 New York City protests—which ultimately drew about 1,000 participants—apparently represented “the culmination” of a campaign by Wade Rathke, founder of ACORN and president of an SEIU local in New Orleans, who in March 2011 had issued a call for “days of rage in ten cities around JP Morgan Chase.” Rathke's efforts were supported by Stephen Lerner, an SEIU board member and radical-left organizer who candidly aims to “destabilize the folks that are in power and start to rebuild a movement”; “bring down the stock market”; “bring down [the] bonuses” of executives in the financial sector; and “interfere with their ability to ... be rich.”

Between 2001 and 2011, AMF received $176,500 in grants from the Glaser Progress Foundation, and $309,773 from the Tides Foundation.

Is there anyway this info can be verified?
Also, while I don't swing to the extreme these persons listed do...I don't have a problem with such persons being behind the movement. The corporate stranglehold on the world has got to be broken.

Occupy Wall Street is an ongoing demonstration in New York City.[4] The protest was originally called for by the Canadian activist[5] group Adbusters; it took inspiration from the Arab Spring movement, particularly the Tahrir Square protests in Cairo, which initiated the 2011 Egyptian Revolution.[6]

Are these people being financed by banks and private corps? This is what I want to know about the OWS organizers.

I'm quick to raise an eyebrow when ATSers start to throw the communist label around...it reeks of ignorance.

The website you are basing your post on does not seem to be an "official" web site for the Occupy Wall street movement. There does not seem to be an officail web site for the movement at this time. If I do a google search I can come up with many different sites claiming to be about the movement.

Let me google that for you

Some of these seem to be or look to be more credible than your original site that you are using to discredit the issue. Oh and notice if you do a WHOIS only a few come back with questionable ownership of the hosting server....

I can pick and choose the information to support my claims, but I am more honest than that so I will let you make the call...

A Canadian activist group named Adbusters. They organized the protests in Cairo which led to the 2011 Egyptian Revolution..

Your excerpt doesn't say that the "Adbusters" organized the protests in Cairo! It says, quite clearly, that they "took inspiration from the Arab Spring movement, particularly the Tahrir Square protests in Cairo".

Why did you not understand what it said?

See ya,

This is hardly a secret. Occupy Wall Street started as a mere suggestion on the adbusters blog and actually came to fruition. Having worked with adbusters and being very familiar with Kalle Lasn I can tell you that you have nothing to fear. On top of that Kalle is not running this movement.. merely helping foster it at this point. After the #occupy movement started to spread the media here in Vancouver interviewed Kalle Lasn regarding the #occupyvancouver starting up.

Occupy Wall Street began with a call to action on the blog of Vancouver-based advocacy magazine, Adbusters, in July. On Sept. 17, protesters began occupying a park near the New York Stock Exchange. “We’re the people who catalyzed this thing, but we’re not the people who are running it,” said Adbusters co-founder Kalle Lasn. “The people on the streets who have the guts to sleep out there night after night, those are the people who are really driving it.”

Here it is for you to observe in a paranoid fashion and make insane conclusions from.

www.canada.com...

Vancouver has a long and proud history of activism. It is a very green city with a very ethically oriented population. Greenpeace was also born here for example.
Relax. Kalle Lasn, of all people, is not working for a NWO and, despite previous comments, isn't stupid enough to have some agenda to spawn a socialist dictatorship and take your car away. I promise you that.

I've been following a journalist @shoq on twitter who after a bit of a debate with Glen Greenwald, decided to get involved. It's my understanding, according to @shoq, that occupywallstreet.org is the "unofficial" official site. Take it for what it's worth. Considering it's the oldest site, that would make sense I suppose.

Which is very odd since Adbusters didn't suggest the wall street occupation until July. Hmmmmm

The sites you you listed are. But they are not the only ones available, that is the point. Any one can pick and choose the evidence they whant so that they can support their argument.

This sight is about denying ignorance, not blind belief of what one person types, try it out.

Take it easy friends.. nothing wrong with a little due diligence.
To get back on track.. I think the real potential for concern isn't who started ths movement but who might try to influence it or take it over. Already we have Tea Partiers and Dennis Kucinich offering advice.. no doubt CIA/FBI will infiltrate and either try to destroy it though violence or discrediting the movement.. or worse, you have the potential for a leader to rise up from the midst and start steering it in dubious directions.
