I know absolutely nothing about this photo other than where is was apparently taken. This is by far one of the strangest fish Ive ever seen. Way more creepy than that Russian Alien Fish.

KILL IT WITH FIRE!!!

Seriously, that is one FREAKY looking fish! I am fairly confident that had I been the one catching it, I would have needed a change of pants right afterwards.

Perhaps it looks a stranger because it is spread flat across the surface, still I would hate to see one of those diving lol.

Why would you get afraid of this one?....it's not more than 2-4 inches tall judgeing from the metalplate it's placed on. (You see this type of metal plates load's of places).

If this is a hatchling maybe it's mother is pretty mean....this one just special and cool looking.

poor thing, hope they killed it underwater... otherwise it died from decompression, which is probably part of why it looks like a blob of goo.

This fish looks NOTHING like a black swallower........did you compare pics? That's like seeing a picture of a dead elephant and saying "obviously this is a giraffe"

They live at great depth/pressure. creatures fished out of those depths seldom resemble what they look like in their natural enviroment.

Well the specimen in the picture is not laid out all nice and neat like the one in the drawing but yes I did compare them. I also compared it to this drawing:

And this image

It's a black swallower.

A lot of deep sea fish are very, very weird looking - well, at least to our eyes.

Also, the seas are so big and so ill explored, they apparently find multiple new species pretty much every time they do a deep sea dive.

THis one looks more like some sort of angler fish than the black swallower to me. The bottom jaw seems too small for the swallower. The angler also has hair-like tendrils, same as this fish. And the shape is closer.
