The studies quoted are at least 20 years old (based on the dates given on that linked page).

I would think that the statistics for children of welfare mothers becoming dependent upon welfare themselves would have changed by now...for the worse. I couldn't find any hard statistics that supported my theory, but there is lots of information out there about generational poverty.

By the way...I do NOT think this is a racial issue. It is a socioeconomic issue (with all races represented).

You know privatizing the schools would be a good thing. Look at the public education system. Let parents decide with their money where they want their kids to go to school. If you gave each parent a voucher to use out of the taxes they pay, they can pick the school they want. this causes the schools to compete for your child. I don't know about you but i want the best education for my kids that I can afford.

I'm a public school teacher.

And I LOVE this idea, personally!

Good luck getting unemployment when you quit your job. Do you really not understand the unemployment system to make a statement like that?
It is all taken care of. I am not exactly "quitting", I have arranged to be laid off. I have been doing the research, I will get more than $500/month. I will also pursue the free cell phone, SNAP(food stamps), and other benefits.

I am doing this BECAUSE of my principles. It is time to get the lazy off the dole, and if they starve in the street because they refuse to work....TOO DAMN BAD! He who WILL NOT work shall not eat.

Without nationalized standards how do these variously educated people meet on the same playing field of your society and compete?

Some will fall through the cracks, some may remain uneducated.
Lives of crime will be the only viable option. Isn't this your problem? Or no?

This is key...

I don't know about you but i want the best education for my kids that I can afford

You don't know about me.
If you knew about the only commandment besides love God - you would know about me.
You would know that since you want the best education you can afford - it is what I want for my children too.
How can you NOT give equal opportunity and a quality basic education to every child??
Those minimum standards should be met.
If you want to send your child to a private school you should be able to do so but no taxpayer should give you a voucher and pay you to be an elitist, pay you to give your child an edge over theirs.
That would be stupid.

If you should not be forced to pay for his kids school, why should he be forced to pay for yours when his kids are not attending the same school?

RE The minimum standards: What a joke. Look at the test scores and graduation rates since the formation of the dept of education. Look at literacy rates. Be serious. The dept of education is an example of Orwellian double speak.

I think it is because so much of our focus has been taken away from our schools.
We are entering and concerning ourselves with the affairs of foreign countries.
We used to take pride in our education system.

...but there isn't any money in it.

Exactly right. We borrow all the money used for entitlements, it does not come from taxes.

i do feel the pain. 50% is steep, although I think the OP is using a bit of hyperbole. It is his last dollars earned (above $250,000 adjusted gross income) that is taxed at 50%. It is not the whole $250,000 that is taxed at 50%. Regardless, the tax rates are too high.

I think a tax system based on accumulated wealth instead of income is the answer. Start with a modest tax at 2.5 million net worth and raise the rate the higher you go from there. Throw in a 70% short term cap gains tax rate and you take most of the foul play out of the markets as well.

Look, I was just like you, until I got laid off. Then I had no choice but to go on food stamps...can't exactly farm the front of my apartment complex. I wish you all the best of luck in finding a job. I have been looking for 2 years and nothing. Only a handful of interviews. Luckily the unemployment money I used sparingly and was able to stretch it out. I got $6,000 total. With the help of food stamps I am able to eat in my small apartment. However, all the savings are tapped. It is only with school loans and living very meagerly that I can make it by without a job. You have to understand that unemployment is a benefit to all of us, not everyone can afford to arrange to be laid off. That would be next to suicide for many.

In my new postition we currently pay, between our joint earnings, nearly 50% in taxes between state, federal and local property taxes.

Heck, employees also pay taxes into things like social security and now the republicans want to keep their money and withhold the services they've paid into.

You're right, why are the republicans entitled to that?

That being said, I wish I were rich and I wish the enconomy was good. It might make the nasty pill of grossly inflated taxes that much easier to swallow.

At certain point (the VERY rich) it actually becomes beneficial for the economy to be messed up because it is easier to gain power.

Hence, our government being prevented from taking an real constructive action.

But for someone in your situation it would probably be better for the economy to be good...

She helps me maximize my deductions but some are not avoidable like my property taxes. They reassessed the town this past year and we saw a $6,000 increase. I am however in the process of appealing the assessment. I live in a nice town but by no means a very affluent commmunity. There are several surrouding towns that have even higher property taxes they we do.

If you pay property taxes then you must own a home. That must be nice, huh?

If your property taxes are what you say they are, then I bet you have a pretty nice home, huh?

These threads are becoming tiring.

Considering the OP and all the follow on response, I can't help but to wonder why no one realizes this fundamental fact...and flaw...of taxes:

No one who pays taxes has any control over where the money goes.

No one.

The relevance of this understanding should not be taken lightly.

So let me repeat this:

You do not have any say in where your tax money goes.

Those who think otherwise do should do research into where American tax dollars go. And then realize your influence on the direction of that collected wealth.

And this is one of several key failures plaguing the American Government.

Consider this...

if tax dollars were redirected in-country verses out-country...America would be a far different place.

if business ethics were actually designed to benefit the workers verses the owners...America would be a far different place.

if American Government truly had the welfare of Americans as their primary concern...

America would be a far different place.

Until those things change, one can gripe all they want about taxes. It won't change the simple fact that those who pay taxes have no control over where these dollars go.

And altering taxes to benefit specific groups won't change the simple fact that those who pay taxes still don't have control over where tax dollars go.

This is the real problem. If there was such a thing as sound logical control over these tax dollars, control that aligned to the welfare of Americans, then the issue of taxes, well, would not be an issue.

But since there is corruption, unaccountability, and irresponsibility by those who decide on how tax dollars are spent...those who pay taxes are merely uncapped cookie jars.

Food for thought. Nothing more.

I'm curious how many of you would allow you neighbor to come over to your house and let him take wood from your shed and build a deck, or get food out of you fridge to feed his dog, or maybe siphon half of the gas out of your car for his. You would say no that's personal property. Well isn't your labor personal property? All said and done that's what your government does.

What makes you think any of that money is yours? It all belongs to the FED. In order to settle all our debts, we have to return all the Federal Reserve Notes. Every last one. Not sure how we handle the interest...

But it kinda is... we borrowed all those Fed Notes with US Bonds. If you are a US Citizen, you share the debt. Matter of fact, we ARE the collateral!

Unemployment is not welfare. It is money that was stolen from us who have worked in the system for 30-40 years.. If I can get some of it back I don't feel bad about that at all. You have bought the lie that taxes pay for these things. Your taxes pay interest to banksters for printing money from nothing. Blaming the so called lazy and welfare recipients etc. is just a distraction to keep you from focusing on the real culprit.

Taxes are theft period. Focus in the thieves not on people to are just trying to survive anyway they can.

Those who are truly tired of the "monetary" system, have removed themselves by understanding that money is $$$.... yes dollar signs. We have fallen for the oldest trick in the book. Just like the story of the Emperor Wears No Clothes.

Those who know that the system is used to be used have done so, and those that are afraid of doing it are getting screwed. This is how it works. You can explain it to a 10 yr old a get a good look at what is going on. The system is a beatable system. It was never meant for the "working class".

It was meant for people that can look past the system and still bring money to the rich. This is how the world goes round. A hard pill to swallow, but the truth nonetheless.

Peace, NRE.

I agree 100% OP. I am leaving my job in a few weeks and I plan to go on unemployment and get all of the other socialist entitlements I possibly can. Between federal, state, local and property taxes I pay over 40k/year in taxes. I say ENOUGH!!! I QUIT! By the time I grab all of the benefits I can, I hope to become a net loss of 75k or more to the "system". Unless you know where I can find Galt's Gulch, I quit. I am done subsidizing the lazy.

Yes being on welfare is awesome. It is something everyone should strive for because it is sooo great. Sure, you are poor and have nothing but it is all free!

Why would you even say such a thing when you have no intention of doing any such thing. You do not get to keep all your toys and your fancy house and just get that stuff paid for. Check back in in a week and tell us how awesome being on welfare is for you.
