WASHINGTON -- Laid-off workers and aging baby boomers are flooding Social Security's disability program with benefit claims, pushing the financially strapped system toward the brink of insolvency.

Applications are up nearly 50 percent over a decade ago as people with disabilities lose their jobs and can't find new ones in an economy that has shed nearly 7 million jobs.

New congressional estimates say the trust fund that supports Social Security disability will run out of money by 2017...

it is hardly "breaking news" for most of ATS that social security is in trouble, but this article is of interest because it focuses purely on DISABILITY payouts.

It seems information is emerging that disability is more troubled than other parts of social security and the article makes the eyebrow-arching claim that the disability program could fail in 5-6 years...yes, 5-6 years, not 20 years, not 30 years, no comfy multi-decade cushion anymore.

I also find it interesting that the article correlates the explosion in disability payouts with the rise of recent boomer reiterees - a true demographic mega-trend that is just beginning to seethe as we speak. Usually, connection of the social security problem with retirees do not usually focus on disability per se, and thus this article is eye-opening in that it brings this particular ugly wrinkle of the problem into fresh relief.

How many people do you personally know that are abusing disability?

I know 10. It's an epidemic in America. Cut them off, why should I work my butt off in the thick of a bad economy so you can have 51 out of 52 weeks off due to asthma? I'll work till I die for my wife and kids (I have no kids and I'm unmarried but the fact is true).

If you're a person faking your disability and taking my tax dollars I have to contribute each paycheck, good riddance.

To anyone with sore knee's or sore back's that will flame me for saying your leaching off the system, I'm not there yet. The rate at which I have to slave to pay for your benefits will lead me right where you are.

I didn't realize that there was a separation between the disability and the retirement packages.
I'm a recipient of the disability program. Not the SSI payments,. I worked for years and paid into SS, but am now disabled before I'm of retirement age. And I do have a medicare card. I've had one for 15 years and only used it this year. I was amazed at how much medicare covered.

I should have, I suppose, used it more times. I would have more money in the bank. I just didn't considrer using it, until I developed a serious problem and was left with only showing my medicare card at the doctor's office.

Really! I didn't even think of flashing that card for years. Instead I just paid the 75 dollars for a doctor visit and went about my business.

Now, though, that I'm just about incapacitated, I'd hate to see this program go.

Yes, people can really, really, be disabled enough that they are getting Social Security, can work just a bit each week, due to their disabilities, and still receive SS. And get a medicare card before they are 65.

But dumbass me, I just paid for doctor's bills out of my small checks from jobs each month.

I question social security myself. Where i work pharmacutical retail store in southwest CT, hey have and do hire illegal immigrants, mostly from guatemala. they have been using false SS numbers, and the company allowed it. i ahve contaced ICE about 3 weeks ago, but the guy thier didnt really seem to are much at all. Just siad he'd send someone thier next available chance they get. he should have been honest, and said janet nepalotino has no interest in them invading and ripping off socail security..i wonder if somehow, millions of illegals doing os, have hlepd corrupt and destablize it.

In other words..its ok for them to pay NO taxes, stealing form the system and you and me, and using dead poeples SS for all i know, cracker jax box or something numbers to help SS collect more mony..i wonder where false SS number taxes get funnled too. FEDS of course, but what happens too it, where does it o? get spent on? capilasim is a scandal and theft plain and simple, at least sine george jrs'. version of it, and the AIG cabinet in the whitehouse at the time.

Where does it go? Into people's pockets.

After the last crash of the stock market, I decided to pay my credit cards off and get rid of all debt.

I'm free of all that now, I think many people did the same thing. The bankers system of interest holding the entire paradigm up ended.

Many times when I asked people where are they working, I've heard the answer "I got disability". Looking at them, I saw 2 legs, 2 arms, 2 eyes......nope, nothing missing. Never asked neither, but I guess it could be a mental disorder.

Sometimes the conversation were interrupted by their smart phones ( maybe they got it before start claiming benefits). I wonder if they pay mortgage, or just rent like me.

I dated a girl, her older sister was "disabled". She had a smart phone and drove a Lexus. She did live in a lower quality apartment in a large apartment building. The considered her disabled because she was one of the first kids to take the prescription drug riddalen (spelling is probobly wrong). Either way, she had free room and board and got paid.

What a lot of crock. Disabilities come in many shapes and sizes. And you guys should all learn, that there is a law of consequence to not looking after your own. This world has over 2/3rds of its citizens living in the most appalling tramatizing torturous poverty. Their free will taken from them. And in our countries, health is but a gift, can be taken at a moments notice. You're in school. The lesson is love. Be grateful for your health, and your job even. PERIOD.

If so, how is this possible that we pay OUR money into this, and it somehow dissapears?!

I don't understand, I don't understand a lot of the things that go on with our country. We are forced to pay social security but then they say they will run out?! Where did my money go? Don't we pay enough in taxes? What if I just don't want social security then? Do I have a choice in paying?

I have had a few jobs, working at amusement parks and at the mall. I am trying to start my first career and these are some things I would like to know before I get a job and start signing away my money to the government.

Every government social program IS INSOLVENT. they just borrowed two trillion to keep it going for cripe sake... As soon as the dollar loses reserve currency status it is over and we will see America a 3rd world country almost overnight. it will be our worst nightmare come true! The only reason it has not yet is because we are the only country that does not have to produce anything to receive federal reserve notes. But the rest of the world has to trade goods and services for them and are sick and tired of it.

All these programs have been living on this cheap credit for decades the game is all but over. The fat lady is warming up to sing.

Don't worry sweetie, you're not alone. I've paid into SS my entire adult life, and ..... it's gone?

I honestly wish we could file a class action suit against the U.S. demanding they make retroactive every dime we have paid into social security and GIVE IT BACK.

Isn't it fraudulent to take someone's money, telling them it is for a particular thing, and it turns out, that was just a ruse? Money we paid to support aging and disabled people was actually used to engage in warfare?

Isn't that what cheap con-artists do?

For the moment, SS is still being paid. But in the event it stops, we should demand that the money we paid into it be refunded. Otherwise, it's like paying for a product that doesn't exist. Of course they'll keep the money, but they should change the deduction title to "war mongering tax."

there are those out there that want to demonize all of the social programs as a waste of money on useless-eaters

the real culprit is the congress that funds everything instead of having a 'Balanced Budget'...
how long would the USA war on terrorism, war on drugs, etc last if we were assessed a tax levey to fund these operations instead of raiding the excess monies sitting in the $2Trillion Social Security Fund (now filled with worthless IOUs instead of cash or Treasuries/Bonds)

Obviously the Social Security system should not be funded out of the tax payer revenues. Obviously the Social Security system should be funded using "confetti" printed into existence by the Federal Reserve Bank. Only then will the economy get out of its recession. This process is called "Quantitative Easing" and is nothing new in the realms of money management. In other words only by being socialist are we going to have a capitaist system that is prosperous. In deed it is because of the lack of socialism that the capitalist system is collapsing into recession.

Thanks to Clinton we have allowed our government to loot them at will yes many people have no clue how the so call "insolvency came to play" don't you get it, is in the plan since Bush to privatize them, occurs under privatization they will become "premiums" to be pay by anybody that pay taxes regardless and because privatization is all for profits, do expect the "premiums to go up in prices"



Obama have no problems giving trillions of dollars to the IMF in order to bailout countries like Greece neither have problems with giving billions to the IMF so Germany and France can achieve their Nazi wet dream.

But is not money for jobs and neither for our entitlement programs in the US that are been paid by the tax payer during their working adult life.

That's because the funds have been misappropriated for so long. A person with a slight mental disability (BIPOLAR) SHOULD NOT be getting disability, A Drunk should NOT be Getting disability, A Drug ADDICT should NOT be getting disability. I know plenty of functioning drunks and drug addicts, WTH? WHY should we pay someone to sit on their A$$ and smoke crack or drink 40 ounces all day? Why should we? NO! If you want to help those kinds send them to a rehab and that is it, nothing more!!! For mental health patients they are physically capable of working with drug treatment!!! ADHD put them on disability? WHAT? It's just friggin insane!
