NASA: DNA Found on Meteorites Indicates Life May Have Originated in Space

www.ibtimes.com

According to the findings from a group of NASA-funded researchers, the scientists found that ready-made DNA parts could have crashed to earth's surface on objects like meteorites, and then assembled under earth's early conditions to create the first DNA. The researchers, from NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, made their discovery using samples from 12 carbon-rich meteorites, nine of which came from Antarctica. Then, the team extracted small fragments of the meteorite and ran them through a process to determine their structure. What they found, was adenine and guanine. These are two of the nucleobases needed to make DNA that form the rungs of the ladder (in addition to thymine and cytosine, which were not present in the sample).

Talking about panspermia, being seeded from outer space, nice article! I definitely believe there is life out there, whether we originated from the earth or not is one of the greatest mysteries. =D

Either that or the premise that extraterrestial life is like us is being set up.

I watched a program a while back about creating that 'spark' of life, and under all the correct conditions, extremes of temperature, pressure etc, that spark somehow happens and the protiens and amino acids started to 'move' and join, this was done in a lab.

Interesting coincidence with all of the talk of military / goverment avtivity down there that they found some metoerites with "DNA" in them. Maybe they have found something more than this but are trying to ease us into what they really found, this discovery is monumental, the fact that these meteorites, and probably millions of others, could be crashing into every planet in the known unverse...life could be everywhere!

The post above is inaccurate. They did not find DNA. They found parts that are necessary for DNA--adenine and guanine. These are not nearly enough to make up DNA. You still need many other parts including thymine and cytosine. DNA is manufactured and does not arise by accident. DNA is an encoded framework of information. This framework is a much more advanced form of the same logic used in computer programming. DNA reveals evidence for a complex engineering process used in bio-mechanical artificial life. We are created. There is no getting around consciousness being pre-existent to our bodies.

This theory has recently been proven false. The Noble Prize winning scientist (Peter Mitchell) that discovered chemiosmosis, demonstrated that life could not have started from the primordial soup. Chemiosmosis is not a chemical process. It is a mechanical process requiring the pump that all cells use to manufacture their energy. This is equivalent to the most advanced energy cell technology we possess today. Our own energy cells are copies of this process in a less efficient form. It boils down to irreducible complexity again. We are engineered down to the nano particle level of quantum complexity.

Exactly! No, this is not "disclosure." This is like saying, "I found some really big rocks in a field! Under the right circumstances they could be made into Stonehenge!" This has nothing to do with being intentionally seeded, with aliens, or with disclosure.

Damn! Another purposely incorrect headline to sucker us into reading that such is not exactly the case.

Forgivable, no, but that style of tabloid journalism is not uncommon on ATS where most are unaware of the standards of journalism or else they only get their principles from the Inquirer or the Sun.

This would be like saying they found water and sugar.. just because those can be combined with other things to make Pepsi, doesn't mean they discovered Pepsi

No, they found two components required to make DNA, not DNA itself .. What they are saying is that the ingredients for life are out there.. which I didn't think was ever in question, unless of course you have the creationist outlook.

So you blame me for what you call misleading title?

You need to remember ATS is nothing like Glp where you can say what ever you want to start fights.
Ats has standards and decorum.
If you can't abide by them i suggest glp is the place for you none there have any manners either.

could it just be that a meteorite had crashed in antarctica and nucleobases actually developed on or inside the rock while it was on earth? maybe the reason the other two nucleobases had not developed is because antarctica is a diffifcult environment for life to actually propogate? in my opinion is sounds reasonable. then again im not educated in the processes needed to create dna molecules so its also possible that it did come from outerspace. otherwise there would be mounds of guanine all over antarctica by now.

yes the last sentence was a joke.
