US Navy Orders Laser Machine Guns

www.theregister.co.uk

US Navy warships will soon be equipped with fearful combination weapons mounts boasting both heavy machine-guns and high powered laser rayguns, it has been announced.

Manufacturer Boeing says it has inked a teaming agreement with the US operations of arms globo-mammoth BAE Systems to build the Mk 38 Mod 2 Tactical Laser System to naval requirements. We learn that the new raygun installation will be based on the existing Mk 38 Machine Gun System, a robotic gun turret whose primary punch is provided by the fearsome M242 Bushmaster Chain Gun, effectively a light auto-cannon.

From the ones who brought us the Navy Rail Gun,
The Navy is now bringing us a portable "Death Ray"

. [atsimg]http://files.abovetopsecret.com/images/member/f418558c2cfc.jpg[/atsimg]

A Laser Machine Gun that can to fire 180 rounds per minute at 2000 yards accurately; toggle the gun from machine gun rounds to laser pulses, with different “levels of laser energy,” according to BAE.

Laser pulses and machine gun rounds at the same time!

And while this laser is smaller than the Navy's Free Electron Laser that has the potential to burn through 20 feet of steel per second , its one step towards a new future of fighting at the speed of light and hypersonics.

Just because they're only "ordering" them now, in the public eye, does not mean they haven't already got some.

Im sure theres been a thread like this already .... Hmmm. Well I for one like the idea . It really doesnt matter how powerful the damn thing is, if it can cook a man in his skin, and cook off ammo and flammable materials, Im sure some nutcase will find a use for it, and all the nuttiest nutters end up in the military. If anyone can do it , they can.

True that, I am sure they do.
This is likely what they call disclosure.

Supposedly they will be ready at the end of the month.

No worries, that search function is a mystery to me...even though I use it,
its a bit evasive.

I knew that they had a crude set of of one a couple of months ago,
but this looks like they are ordering up a bunch.

Guess the pirates are going to have to step it up a bit...

That's really cool...

... now if they could only build a ship that didn't turn into a rust bucket overnight to hold this laser...

Oh Jesus... Pirates with lazer pistols... flintlock lazer pistols, tazer cutlasses, and eyepatches with optical enhancements built in, hardwired to the nerves.... ye gods the badassery is overwhelming

Um yeah... I think most of the pirate vessels which have been put to sea of late would be burned beyond use or recognition by the lazer mounts ... most of them are badly maintained at the best of times, and very often they have to have fuel of some sort available for top up during longer trips, so there are exposed canisters, the occasional spill. Besides which , most pirate vessels have outboards motors, so one would have only to focus the beam on a vital part of the engine, and BOOM , pirate sunk!

That sounds like its right up DAPRA's ally. I think they are working right now to make
the human eye function with lasers, using jellyfish. No joke!

Them pirates better watch out.

Umm, wouldn't this trivial solution just make it almost useless?

Coat the boats with a mirror-like material and spread a couple of mirror shields on board

This is very, very interesting, because the US Gov't recently announced that the program to build high powered lasers for the Navy was going to be scrapped. This was part of the last "spending cut announcement" a few months back when they announced something like $800 billion in cuts over 10 years. Anyone remember the details?

Looks like another promise of spending cuts that they didn't go through with.

Well theres the enormous lazer they bunged in a large military aircraft, and were thinking of using as a nuke killer. Along side that there are those brutal blue lazers which can apparantly burn human flesh. Oh AND I think there was a ground based lazer weapon for bringing down missiles and other projectiles as well.

The names of the projects escape me for the moment, but I know they are in the archives here somewhere. Search around, and wonder no more !

I take it you are not aware of the Teflon paint the Navy uses below the waterline? it inhibits rust and wards off the growth of barnacles.

If it were up to me I would paint all the way up the gunnels, but there your talking a lot of paint.

I love it. I can't emphasize enough how much I enjoy the great increases in US defense spending on such expensive, futuristic and impractical technology. Most of the money taxed from the average American to pay for programs like this will end up in the pockets of the private defense corporations. Things like this drain the US economy big time, and the kleptocratic government chooses to cut "socialist" welfare programs to balance the budget.

At some point, it's all going to crack and explode. The people manning these weapons will have to make a choice: follow orders and fight the uprising or defect to the people. I don't think there's many people who would make anything other than the human choice in that situation, unless they gain to profit from war. But even these people will become rejected by society for the parasites that they are.

/end rant

if the mirror is made of steel folded 30 times maybe, but this is extremely hot laser. melts mirror like nothing.
