It was not ejected directly at Earth. SpaceWeather.com is a great source of information regarding the sun's activites.

Traveling faster than 1100 km/s, the CME should deliver a glancing blow to Earth's magnetic field on June 9th. High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras when the CME arrives.

I believe that is called a coronal mass ejection. CME for short. They're common from what I understand. What I do not know is if one of that size is normal or not.
