Utah man cited for paying disputed bill with 2,500 pennies

He didn't break the law.
He was arrested because people don't like him or his attitude.

I understand what you are saying and I agree. I'm sure we all had those times where we wanted to jump over a counter and beat the daylights out of someone. I'm in this cituation every single time I goto a fast food place. McIdiots always seem to mess up my order no matter where I am. Yet, I know if I do such a thing, or argue someone till Im blue in the face, they always have the right to call the law into it, and even though I feel it's their own reason for avoiding facing up to the issue at hand, they have that right.

I dont know if you are aware of this, but in the US, every single person has the right to file a suit or complaint against someone, fraudulent or not. A person can be arrested by something another claims and be held untill the court proves otherwise. So much for innocent untill proven guilty. But unfortunatly, for the sake of the innocent, other innocent must pay for the right of these laws in the same, although possibly fraudulent way.

(Shrugs) I wasnt dissagreeing as a whole, I just feel that there is a way to handle any cituation. His wasnt a very wise one. People are AHoles, provoked or not... Unfortunatly even the ones at fault can be just as Aholish in a way that there is nothing we can do to counter it. If we do, we are found at fault. This guy, on the other hand, should have handled himself better... Oh by all means, use the pennies. There is nothing like sticking it to the man! But if ya do it with a smile and a good day, it's more salt on the wound

Actually I'm hoping he pays the fine in pennies as well. He just needs to take a hint from the 2008 gent and roll those babies up before handing them over !!

$25 is NOT alot of money to freak out over a hospital bill unless he misunderstood obama care.

he did that to me, i would have shot him in the forehead, making sure he would never do that to anybody again and

put him on life support for a couple years and charged his family.

Hmm i wonder if the bill had been say 250000 and hed thrown down 2500, 100 dollar bills, would they still have been so upset?

I think anyone who read the article can tell it wasn't the pennies but the man's manner in which he reportedly dumped pennies everywhere and made a huge scene in the office. Let's grow up and act like adults people.

The problem is they were not rolled. He dumped them on the counter, all 2,500 of them. He would have been fine if he brought a huge jar or bucket and said here you go, this is my payment, please count it to verify.

I think I would have been pissed if someone dumped that much coin at my workplace and assumed I would clean it up. It probably escalated enough where they had to call the cops on him. Life is to short to get this worked up over a $25 bill.

Was apparently rude about it, whilst paying bill with said pennies? Customer service issue. Should be spanked, not cited...

People are becoming, in my humble opinion, too overly sensitive. Calling the cops because someone is a little rude? I'm sure the cops were more than happy to answer this particular call... Citing him? Overkill. Should have escorted him out, and told him to grow the hell up, and to have a nice day.

Then they should have gone into the office and told the staff: "Really? You couldn't just smile and count the coins? That would have bugged him far more than calling us..." Angry, rude people hate smilinig polite customer service folks...it drives them nuts.

I love how people are jumping to rip this guy a new one because he didn't just BOHICA and SMILE while he got ...um screwed.

Guess what.... It's ok to be angry when you are being charged for something you feel you shouldn't have to pay!

Not only is it Ok but it is NOT disorderly conduct to let those TAKING FROM YOU know you are unhappy.

If him putting 2500 pennies on the counter was just too much for their widdle hearts to take maybe they should not be in the field of CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!

You do get that right? THEIR JOB IS TO DEAL WITH CUSTOMERS!!! If their company is screwing people and making them angry maybe they should QUIT not call the cops on the people who are justifiably angry.

Exactly seagull... why are people not seeing that calling the cops on a customer who's upset but WILLING TO PAY THE BILL they don't feel they owe is ridiculous?

That is the question that really needs asked... well that and what else can I be cited for? How are you going to feel next time you go to subway and ask for no pickles and they put them on anyway?

How would you feel if when you asked them to remove the pickles they refuse?

Now how would you feel if when you told them you refused to pay for the sandwich they called the police and had you charged with theft?

Guess what this guy just wanted no pickles on his FRIGGIN SANDWICH...


So what some pennies hit the floor .... I've paid for stuff in all pennies too it's a great way to get policies changed. I even had the cops called on me one time for doing it. Luckily for ME when I did it the cops looked at the lady and said "are you refusing to take legal tender of the UNited States of America? Because if you are we have to arrest you not him" The cops in this news story were WAY OUT OF LINE and that IMHO is the real story.

I once went to the hospital for a stethoscope check. I wanted an opinion on if my heart seemed fine or not.

1minute in room, doc walks in, checks my heart with scope, says your fine, leaves - I went home.

50 $ bill.

I never paid it though. Why would I? For a scope check I only pay 1 $ sorry. 1 minute = 1 $? That's 60 $ a minute! Instead they wanted 50 $! 50x60 = 3000 $ per hour pay.

I would rather die than pay someone 3000 $ per hour to put a stupid stethoscope on my chest and say "it sounds fine to me!".

I cant believe that this is news, seriously........ 25 dollars.
Why is this a story

If that were me, I would demand a jury trial for the disorderly conduct citation and ask for a court appointed lawyer. If you lose, appeal, appeal, appeal. Make it cost them dearly to enforce that citation. If you still have to pay the fine, use a random assortment of pennies, nickles, and dimes. Mix in a few Canadian coins just to make sure they are paying attention.

my take on this -if you feel the bill is unjustified - lawyer up and fight it , otherwise grow up & pay

A lot of people seem to have decided a lot of things from this small report. Have you ever got a medical bill you did not owe? I have and they hasseled me for months charged me interest over and over until I finaly found the receipt showing I had paid it at the time of treatment...there are so many many things that could have led to this mans anger and or the pennies that feel on the floor may have been only a few WHO KNOWS we don't! i don't see a thing wrong with pennies you are paying with being on the counter as they need to be counted!

Most likely something they DOUBLE charged him for or charged him AFTER his insurance already paid, all happenes all the time, the thing is they are just like the banks they want you to pay up, if they have bad book keeping and thety are wrong they don't pay you interest and you can't hassle them, but if there is an under pay once cent on your part you get interest and letters and calls.

That would have defeated the purpose of his gesture if they were already counted and he was polite. So he should have strewn the pennies about with a smile then?

I'm guessing he was probably (duh) trying to show his discontent, not just wanting to get rid of some pennies...
