Here is an article from newsroomamerica a couple of days ago which, although they say that the situation is very serious, then plays down the severity of the situation by re-assessing the damage to the reactors. From what we know, how can they realistically re-evaluate the melted core damage from 70-55%(for example) ?
newsroomamerica.com...

“Overall, the situation at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant remains very serious,” Denis Flory, IAEA Deputy Director General and Head of the Department of Nuclear Safety and Security, told a news conference in Vienna.

At the same time, he noted that the estimated percentage of core damage to several units of the plant has been revised. The core damage to Unit 1 was revised from an estimated 70 per cent to 55 per cent, while it was revised from 30 to 35 per cent for Unit 2 and from 25 to 30 per cent for Unit 3.

This reflects revisions to assessments from 15 March rather than any recent changes in conditions in the reactor cores, he stated.

Please - Does anyone know how to access the webcams which are feeding the live youtube page? Some countries (where I am) have Youtube blocked and I would like to see what is going on in realtime.
There must be a number of these live webcams which are being used by TEPCO to monitor the state of the situation and they have probably replaced any that were destroyed by the earthquakes or explosions, so that they can see what is happening.

In general, I think we should search for the source of the webcam information rather than rely on what is posted to other sites, such as Youtube. Not only for this reactor site, but for others in Japan too. There are enough of us on the forum to monitor them all and to alert the forum members if anything hapens at other plants as a result of the ongoing earthquakes.

re this video... (which i'm bringing forward in case anyone missed it)

i need to add here, that although the 3:07mins vid captures very well what occurred, this whole grey/black smoke/steam event occured for a lot longer... i watched it all, & looking at the times i took my screenshots, it was going on like this for WELL OVER AN HOUR... come sunrise, like someone has already stated, it suddenly stopped

i think it started a few minutes before my first shot here - taken at 5-22pm (uk time)

i became so engrossed watching this happen... anyway, my next 2 screenshots were taken over an hour later... at 6-36pm & 6-38pm...

i was watching it on my boyfriends pc, in a separate window... i'm sorry i didn't bring it to your attention

this other pic isn't mine, but cut from the group of pics that was posted recently...

this obscuration of the reactors, & the tower which is inbetween & IN FRONT of the reactors (from our/livecams perspective) is what also had me convinced it was indeed smoke at that point

i'd held back for so long trying to pass it off as steam... i don't want to think it was smoke, same as i'd rather it not be there at all as steam, either... i know i could be wrong, but it's really hard for me to think otherwise, despite there being a lack of visible evidence of anything burning

here is my screenshot of the close-up of # 3, taken at 11-35pm (uk time), after it had all ended

i hope more knowledgeable posters here can glean a better understanding of what it all might have been

Here is a live web cam. It is dark outside right now, you can also view it on full screen mode. I think most of the photos posted recently on this thread, are from this site.

If the steam/smoke was was caused by something innocent, surely they would have given some details on what happened? I am very suspicious simply because TEPCO has not given a proper explanation for this sudden burst of steam/smoke.

...Tokyo Electric Power Co opened the doors linking the reactor building to its adjacent turbine building Sunday evening, and confirmed that the resultant release of radioactive materials into the air had not raised radiation levels on the premises, according to the firm.

" the resultant release of radioactive materials into the air had not raised radiation levels on the premises"

They admit that opening the door released radiation yet they say it levels have not risen. That simply doesn't make sense to me.

Nine workers went into the reactor building around 4:20 a.m. and measured radiation and other conditions inside for about 30 minutes, TEPCO said, without immediately announcing the radiation readings.

If the radiation level is confirmed to be safe for workers to operate inside, they will start building a new cooling system for the reactor—the most severely damaged of the six at the plant—which lost cooling functions in the March 11 quake and tsunami.

I would agree it's not a proper explanation, however this was what was posted on the last page as their explanation for the steam/smoke by Maluhia.

Here's TEPCOs explanation for the smoke/steam:

Japan: New Smoke At Nuclear Plant

Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency (NISA), and the Japanese government gave a joint press conference on Sunday and explained that an unusual amount of smoke that billowed from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power reactor on Saturday night was nothing to be concerned about.

"Steam is coming out from the spent fuel pool of the No. 3 and No. 4 reactors, and I'm assuming that due to shadows created by lighting, the steam appeared black. Therefore, we assessed that it's not smoke from something burning or that sort of thing," TEPCO's General Manager, Junichi Matsumoto reassured reporters at the press conference.

And their reason for the deception is the reward the will have gotten for achieving the last paragraph of that same story. A decision has been made. They intend for the nuclear power industry to survive above all else. The industry plans to live long and prosper. Have they, as well, been deemed too big to allow to fail. Our leaders, I feel, across the world, have chosen that the fittest is known in monetary value. Those who shall survive, are those who can best afford to purchase their own survival. An opinion only. Here is the last paragraph, that signals their intent to continue to dance with the nuclear devil, at a cost, to those who can least afford to pay for their safety and survival. They do not want to panic the sacrificial lambs. Some can slip into that wrongness of righteousness. It is the ethics, or twisting of them, that leads to the decisions on the means and the end.

Japanese officials said on Sunday they were committed to nuclear power after Prime Minister Naoto Kan called for another plant to close, but that the target of obtaining half of Japan's electricity from nuclear power by 2030 needed to be examined.

Japan appears willing to continue being a "team" player.

So, there is nothing to worry about? We shall see.I hope they have shared honest and true information on the situation as it is known to be by those most able to know. And if they have not, I trust there are those within the ranks who will find a way to share what they can with those of us on the outside. The world believes, due to information overload in recent weeks, and scant tightly controlled headlines, that work is underway, the plant will be stabilized and there has been and will be no danger to human health. I hope they are correct. Mine eyes must deceive me to believe so at this time. The clock is ticking. Still.

sorry for the longish post , but I believe the Fukushima event is a watershed in the human condition and DWW's concerns are what separate us from blobs of algae in the ocean , consider:

"The illegal we do immediately. The unconstitutional takes a little longer. "[The New World Order] cannot happen without U.S. participation, as we are the most significant single component. Yes, there will be a New World Order, and it will force the United States to change it's perceptions."
~ Henry Kissinger, World Affairs Council Press Conference, Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel , April 19th 1994

"If present trends continue, the world in 2000 will be more crowded, and more vulnerable to disruption than the world we live in now. Serious stresses involving population, resources, and environment are clearly visible ahead. Despite greater material output, the worlds people will be poorer in many ways than they are today."
Excerpt from the 2000 report

"There are only two ways of preventing a world with 10 billion inhabitants. Either the birth rate drops or the death rate will rise.
There is no other way."

There are, of course, many ways to make the death rate increase. In the thermonuclear age war can take care of this very quickly and in a definite way. Famine and disease are the oldest."

-Robert Mc. Namara, former U.S. Secretary of defense and former president of the World Bank, a member of the board of directors of the Washington Post.

"We are going to get Global 2000 implemented, one way or another by famine, starvation, or by choice...
We need a real economic shock,a depression to get our message across."

--Statement of a Zero Population Growth spokesman (9/18/81)
(* Source: The Spiral Report Vol. 111 - March 31, 1982)

“Social machinery to suppress proliferation of systematic families... has two components: one, a campaign aimed at family-formation before it commences, employing such tactics as encouragement of personal greed (best enjoyed in bachelor style, of course), public pornographic celebrations of the body parts of nubile young woman, effortless divorce, mass adoption, tolerance of sexual ambiguity, and many similar tactics. The second component aims at producing pseudo-families: small households (whether biological or synthetic) without any overriding loyalty to the common family cause.

Instead, these are associations of expedience wearing the costume of affection and concern, but always on the lookout for a better deal... During the childhood phase, parents in pseudo-families are made use of by the state to transmit certain values, to maintain and discipline a new serf class composed of their own children, and to report radical cases of deviance to medical, police and re-training authorities... It is a system infused in many places with such black genius in understanding crowd control it is hard not to stand in awe of its unseen architects.”
- John Taylor Gatto, voted New York's Top Teacher of 1991

".. the world planners see the future as being black if they do not take some drastic action to limit population growth; and yet they see little efforts by those third world countries to take such action, to educate the people to limit the population growth. ... therefore, they see the necessity to bring about the destruction of these entities through famine, pestilence, biological warfare. ... this concept was briefly mentioned in the movie called Executive Action, that which dealt with the fictionalized version of the assassination of John Kennedy, wherein it was described in terms of the necessity to rid the world of undesirables in the future. ...this program as that which has been planned, and has been put into operation in various ways, and which is growing in momentum. .... the Medical Association is involved, the governments of many nations are involved."

"... It does not see any miraculous solution available to make a perfect world without intense changes occurring on this plane. ... however, that the degree of chaos and change is that which can be considered. ... indicates that changes are coming, these coming soon; and the intensities and degree of change is that which may vary, according to the level of consciousness and the responsiveness of entities to the urgencies which come forth.

this program...as that which would lead to the annihilation of at least two-thirds or more of the population of this planet through plagues, through biological conditions, famine, war, and other types of annihilation, and through birth control programs; ... is a movement and does have much power ...

... on the other hand, this ... is being promoted by a small number of entities; though this number of entities holds great power upon this plane,--enough to move mountains with their control, power and influence. ... enough to annihilate masses with their control, power, and influence, unless the masses awaken and realize who these entities are who are pulling the strings, the triggers, the manipulations; who these entities are who are dispensing the poisons, who are giving the medicines which are annihilating, who are pushing the buttons which are destroying, who are manipulating the nations and economies to lead to starvation and warfare.

... the masses are beginning to stir, and there are many entities who are aware of these intentions... there are many in levels of power who do not approve or condone this plan, and whose consciousness are beginning to stir and to cause them to respond and react in ways which are not conductive to the plan. ... there are others who are aware of the plan and are outright opposed to the plan, and are taking action to prevent continuation of such implementation of the plan.

SO what can you do ?

what you have already done and are already doing...love your children , teach them the best that you can , and give them the tools they need to seek out the source of our problems as human beings and face them head on , chin up and shoulders forward.

There are things to learn about how to avoid and counter-act radiation , there are technologies that need to be wrestled from there secret places that will enable s us to repair the damages to ourselves and our planet, and if we cannot win them away from the few that seek to hold everything or die trying , then the future lies with the children understanding how this came to be and how and whom is to be held responsible

I have great faith in the human condition , as dark as it may seem the light is the one that we all carry within and it is the love of tomorrows people , the children that reminds us that beauty is not something extra something that can be done without

it is this light in ourselves and our children that needs to be stoked to brightness, remember all the darkness in the universe cannot put out a single candle

Good pick up. Thank you for posting that link to NHK with its info of when the video was taken.
Beats me why Tepco couldn't have just put that info on its own site at the time it released this video.

Now, I've just got up and I'm still on first Java of Monday morning, so I hope members will forgive me if this has been mentioned already as I'm not fully caught up yet: I'm a bit puzzled as to why they say on NHK that this video (supposedly of the SFP in Unit 4) was taken "by a camera on the tip of a mechanical arm used to pour water to cool the reactor." I mean, haven't they (Tepco, NHK et al) been telling us for weeks that Reactor 4 had no fuel in it -- and therefore didn't require cooling?

Thanks for the info. However, as I said, I cannot access Youtube due to current government restrictions here, so all I get is a grey space where the youtube video should appear. Even with proxies, it does not seem to work.

The point I was making is that Youtube is second-hand video and I was hoping that we could determine where the original live stream video came from.

I feel that anything that is second-hand or greater is able to be manipulated or delayed and that is why I was asking if anyone knew the URL of the originating webcam.

and particularly, this section:

...Tokyo Electric Power Co opened the doors linking the reactor building to its adjacent turbine building Sunday evening, and confirmed that the resultant release of radioactive materials into the air had not raised radiation levels on the premises, according to the firm.

"the resultant release of radioactive materials into the air had not raised radiation levels on the premises"

They admit that opening the door released radiation yet they say it levels have not risen. That simply doesn't make sense to me.

Well, you're not alone there, as that statement taken at face value wouldn't make sense to any logically-thinking person. But this is Tepcoese.
The trick is to read between the lines...

"the resultant release of radioactive materials...

"...we knew that opening the doors would release radioactive materials...

..into the air...

...and that they would be carried in the air...

...had not raised radiation levels on the premises"

...and so we waited until the wind would carry them away, so they would not affect our measurements at the site -- that we took after an unspecified time had passed."

See? Easy, really.

Yes, and there are some problems with this video as some of you have noticed:

Bubbles are occasionally visible, as the water is boiling at a temperature of 84 degrees Celsius. After analyzing the amount of radioactive materials in the water, Tokyo Electric Power Company has concluded that the spent fuel rods are not seriously damaged.

First off Tepco/NHK water does not boil at 84C at sea level, those bubbles are almost certainly hydrogen ( like the ones that form in water heaters of the common domestic variety )

Second if that is suppose to be #4 why does it still have an intact and perfect looking gate? (remeber how Tepco said the gate being broken was allowing material to get into the RPV, and that's what we were seeing on the thermal images ...now you can't have it both ways tepco )

Also at 00:38 seconds it certainly appears that their are a lot more rods directly under the camera which would put that total rod count well over 1500. And while they added debris it is not nearly enough to be the mess that is #4. Also unless I miss my guess this #4 pool doesn't resemble the earlier dip and run camera footage , perhaps they just went into #5 which I think would have the number of rods that we see in the video

I should like to remind Tepco that in earlier photos we can clearly see the exposed top of at least part of the pool and so WE KNOW FOR A FACT THAT IT CANNOT BE COMPLETELY intact as it is shown ...just saying

Now I posted a pic of a crane operating in a space that looked like it was between #3 and #4 ( the time stamp on the WC was about 17:40 (5-8-11 CST u.s.)

I watched the crane swing over and then back it appeared that they had taken something out through the roof of the turbine building , and then drove the crane to a postion that was blocked by the #4 building :

Unfortunately I did not get a video capture of the 40 minutes or so of them working and never got a look at WHAT they were digging out of there, but if I have to make a guess I 'd say they were retrieving the cap (s)

I took a good look at the pictures from Saturday and I think that all we have in them is steam . We have speculated here before that they were doing 'extra' cooling measures at night to hide the steam output ( at about the same time it was suspected that the webcam stills were being faked which has now been confirmed ) . Also winds tend to carry stuff off-shore at night and inland by day , so it would be another reason to dump steam at night. My guess is that they increase the pumping at night, and I though we might see a criticality at #3 and I think that is what happened . I think they started pumping more water into #3, but the temps are too high and we had a economy sized sauna

I think #4 was puffing at the same time because Tepco is starting to not have enough cooling to go around and it's become a moving the heat around whack-a-mole game .

Although TEPCO has increased the water injection flow rate to 9 tons an hoursince May 4, the temperature at the lower reactor vessel continues to increase, now leaching to 149.6 degree-C, at 5:00 AM this morning. Since the current route of water injection is going through many other systems, starting with the Fire Fighting System, en route of many auxiliary systems, including Condensate Supply system and Decay Heat Removal System, TEPCO decided to change the route to go through more direct Feed Water System. It is anticipated to take a few days for this switching operation, since workers should get inside the turbine hall to operate several manual valves.

'Inside the turbine hall', well then I guess it is probably a good idea to get any hot caps out of there then

And while Amber Sharick has some good information the estimates for the top of #3rpv stack pressure do not equal saturated steam pressures at those temps ...the volumn of steam however would be equal to about 1/10 of atmospheric pressure IN AN OPEN AIR SPACE ( i.e if the rpv or cv at #3 was closed the steam would be creating higher pressures in that 'trapped' closed space ) at those temperatures if it was also accompanied by other lighter than air gases

She does have an interesting note about how many Tons of water a day are being used: 857tons . That's a lot of water , even if half of it is leaving as radioactive steam what are they doing with the rest? i do not like the cryptic remarks from those e-mails ... I agree that the cv watering at #1 is almost certainly a 'wet-vent' as is the watering of 3 and 2 , and of course the pool at four ...the direct thrust of that is they are almost certanly still ocean dumping ( just a bit more on the sly than before )

Fukushima's No. 1 reactor building radiation up to 700 millisieverts

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- The operator of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant found that the radiation level of the building housing the troubled No. 1 reactor stood at up to 700 millisieverts per hour, the government's nuclear agency said Monday, citing the need for radiation shielding to proceed with work to bring an end to the nuclear crisis.

The radiation level, which was around 10 millisieverts per hour at its lowest, was measured as Tokyo Electric Power Co. workers and agency officials entered into the No. 1 reactor building early Monday as part of preparations to start full-scale work to create a system to stably cool the damaged nuclear fuel inside.

"An area with a double-digit millisievert level, let alone three-digit figures, is quite tough as a working environment. So we have to do the work by using some shielding," Hidehiko Nishiyama, a spokesman for the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency, told a press conference.

As for ways to shield against radiation, the utility known as TEPCO is considering making a metal tunnel for people to walk through, or using some lead sheeting, according to Nishiyama.

TEPCO officials said that the high radiation level is so far unlikely to affect the utility's schedule to stabilize the plant's troubled reactors around October at the earliest, but it is uncertain whether things will go as planned because of the difficult working environment.

Source

And just as a reminder, the doors to unit 1 were opened and left open Sunday. These readings were on Monday.

as an additional reminder, on Thursday they said Unit 1 was just hunkey dorey for workers to enter now..and only say maybe not after they have gone in and the doors were thrown open. This was TEPCO's story last Thursday - same media source -

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Radiation levels have dropped inside the building housing the No. 1 reactor at the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, the plant's operator said Saturday, a development that would pave the way for workers to reenter the site to stabilize the reactor.

The operator, Tokyo Electric Power Co., known as TEPCO, attributed the drop to a ventilator installed in the building on Thursday to filter out radioactive substances inside.
