Obama declares national state of emergency over Libya

thecable.foreignpolicy.com

"I have determined that the actions of Colonel Muammar Qaddafi, his government, and close associates, including extreme measures against the people of Libya, constitute an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States. The order declares a national emergency to deal with this threat," Obama wrote in the letter to House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH).

Say what???!!!???

We have got this directive going into effect also which ties into maybe why he is declaring a National Emergency???

The presidential directive says that, when the president considers an emergency to have occurred, an "Enduring Constitutional Government" comprising "a cooperative effort among the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of the Federal Government, coordinated by the President," will take the place of the nation's regular government. Conservative activist Jerome Corsi and Marjorie Cohn of the National Lawyers Guild have said that this is a violation of the Constitution of the United States in that the three branches of government are separate and equal, with no single branch coordinating the others.[3][4] The directive, created by the president, claims that the president has the power to declare a catastrophic emergency. It does not specify who has the power to declare the emergency over.

Keeps your eyes on what he is doing ladies and gentlemen.

I really hope this isn't how it starts. I think what is happening in Libya is disgusting, but to declare a state of emergency in the US over it?...

And it says 'in a letter', will there be a public statement?

Though this may have been posted before, thank you for making this thread nonetheless. I would not have seen it otherwise.

Obama does nothing = Republicans moan and cry
Obama does something = Republicans moan and cry

Do you people listen to yourselves?

Not even a week ago - some of you in this very thread were off complaining that Obama was not "doing enough" to help Libya.

I hope you don't think highly of yourselves...

and p.s. - why do you "Minimods" jump at ANY opportunity that you can to post completely worthless non sense like "This thread is already posted!!!"

let the mods handle it. my god its pathetic.

Our President seems to be trying his best to rid our government of the few "checks and balances" we have left.
Add what has been posted here to the fact that he TOLD THE DOJ NOT TO ENFORCE SECTION THREE OF D.O.M.A. and you get a man who seems to want to be king of the US of A.
link to DOMA article: www.justice.gov...
He has absolutely no right to decree what laws, or parts, should be enforced. That is the job of the judicial branch.
I have only one thing left to say.
ALL HAIL OBAMA THE KING!!

OR... they could be doing it for exactly the reason they say they are doing it. As your article states:

Effective immediately, all U.S.-based assets of Qaddafi and his four sons are to be frozen and transactions intended to move those assets are prohibited. The order allows the measures to be expanded to include any member of the Libyan government who are determined to be complicit in Qaddafi's brutality.

Did it ever occur to you that perhaps Republicans would like him to act appropriately? Just because he does something, does not, as we've seen the last two years, mean he's doing the right thing in their viewpoint.

Not many people will argue that Obama has nothing the last two years....it's what he's done that's the problem.

Sadly noone is viewing international feedback. way way before Obama said anything. The fact that thousands of Chinese citizens were evacuated has obviously no impact within ats or the media outlests. The fact that French, German, Spanish, U.K, Italian, Russian citizens has obviously not been thrown into the idtio box. People, you really should research into several things.

I quite agree with you, but chaos has been all over the Mid East and Africa, and suddenly Qadaffi is the enemy. It takes the focus off what's really happening, which is the communist/socialist takeover of all these countries.

on the first days of the protests I had a few threads stating the Italians and the French were evacuated and even speculated that they knew something that we obviously didn't and that mostly everyone missed.

Not a bit of attention.

War bells be ringing, war drums be drumming. Reminds me of 1998 and Kosovo for some odd reason. I wonder if Kiddafi is the new Osama and an attack in the near future, or a few years will be blamed on him.

And we were trying to get our citizens out of Egypt too, and our journalists were being attacked more than once by the frenzied mob. Please tell me what's different about Libya?
