Should Children See Beheading Videos? Apparently Liveleaks Thinks So!

Well, apparently they CAN, with no restrictions! I was just on liveleaks, and saw a video that said "Drug Cartel Beheads Rival" or something like that. The first thing I thought was "this can't be real" or I figured it wouldn't actually SHOW the whole thing. THEY DID......I couldn't watch the video, the sound was enough!!! It was horrible!! .ANY child can see this! Yes, I know parents should supervise their kids etc, but the fact is, the parents cannot do that 24/7. The only thing that warned you of the horror of this video was the phrase "warning, watch at your own discretion". That would make some kids WANT to see it because it says that. I am so angry about this. We wonder what is happening to our kids today, well.....this is a good example. Unsupervised kids surfing the net can come across the vilest, most horrible things, and it DOES affect them. It corrupts their minds and desensitizes them. I know that the Daniel Pearl video is hard to find (comparatively).....but this liveleak video is just up there with all the "normal" videos!! I think videos like this should be restricted somehow ( I wish they weren't on at all, but that's wishful thinking)....If people want to see this gruesome stuff, they should have to somehow prove their age or use a credit card....SOMETHING to hinder kids from getting to it. I know many of you might disagree with what I am going to say next, but this is what is wrong with society today. Because of the internet, we see so much depravity, and you cannot "unsee" once you have seen it. It affects you whether you realize it or not. Now think of an impressionable child or teenager watching that....I mean WHO KNOWS what your kids are watching at their friend's home unsupervised. This is really bothering me.....what are your thoughts on this? I feel physically ill after this! If you don't believe it's that bad, here is the link, but I would advise you NOT to watch it....just go there to comfirm what I said is true.

I have an ex friend who showed me that Ken Bigley beheading video. It was horrible. He continued to watch it more times than was healthy. He is now what I would call a sociopath and a truly nasty person to the core. Like a real life Eric Cartman without the humour.

I agree with your sentiments on the matter, no kid should ever see something like that. However some, like my former friend, will actively seek material like this out.

I don't know.....I am beyond shocked! I am going to complain to liveleaks, but I don't know if it will do any good....but you see what I mean? No words can prepare you for the horror of it!

Right, that is EXACTLY my point. Many kids will seek that stuff out just because it's "taboo"....so it is up to the webmasters to make sure it isn't so easily available! It does affect people.I assume your friend was an adult when you saw that video....if it affected him as an adult, imagine what it can do to a child..... There is NO restriction on this video, anyone can acess it.

It's no different from porn sites. You have to be 18+ to view, yet anyone with an internet connection can connect.

If this is your concern, it's the parent's job to restrict which sites their children are allowed to visit.

You think liveleak plays a bad role in gore ? What about the hundreds of video games where you can blow a guy's head off with a shotgun or weapon of your choice? Sure it's not real, but those games are the reason I don't flinch when I see a gory video on the internet.

There is a lot more to LL than beheading videos. A lot of stories get covered days and days before people on ATS even hear about them. You can't pick one specific video and judge an entire site from it.

Don't blame LL. Blame the parenting.

Like I said,I know parents should supervise their kids, but parents CANNOT watch their children 24/7....who knows what they view when at their friends house or other places? You said it's sort of like porn sites....well I don't go to porn sites, but isn't there a charge which you have to use a credit card etc? (maybe I'm just naive LOL) I know Liveleaks has a lot of good stuff too....HOWEVER....this is waaay beyond nudity or someone being shot (which is bad enough).....this is prolonged gore. Did you watch it? Did you notice how long it took? the SOUNDS and closeups?? I am not saying that it's just liveleak.....there are all kinds of gore on the net....but this is a site that teens go to......seeing a girls boobs is one thing....close up of an actual beheading is another! My point is this....since parents can't monitor the kids every second of every day and when they are NOT home....should it not be so easily acessed by kids? I mean, how can it be restricted so it wouldn't be so OUT there and easy to view? It disturbs me that they CAN acess it. So. did you watch the video?

You're absolutely right. That's how most kids find out about things their parents don't want them to know yet.
When I was younger, my parents always made sure my friend's parents knew what we were up to.. but it's the technology/internet age now. Kids are doing things at a much younger age and being exposed to things they wouldnt have seen for a few more years.

While showing kids gore is bad, it's going to happen eventually. I was desensitized by lets say... age ~13-14? I'm not a bad person today, and it hasn't negatively affected me at all. I've only benefited from it because you see the bigger picture at an earlier age.

If anything it's just helping kids get in touch with reality and realize what happens in this world. You don't want to sugar coat everything your kids learn because then when they hit the real world they'll be overwhelmed.

I'm not saying it's GOOD, but think of yourself when you were a kid. You probably looked at stuff or heard things you shouldnt have, but did it ruin your personality? Probably not.

As a parent you want to watch out for your kid.. but as a kid you want your parents to leave you alone. As a kid you think stuff like that might be interesting, but as a parent you wouldn't want your kid seeing that in a million years. But it's gonna happen.

I can understand what you mean....but I am a bit traumatized as an adult just from the sound part (maybe I'm too sensitive? I think if I saw that as a kid I would have nightmares forever....it's just so brutal! I guess ultimately, it depends on the person, but I just don't think it's healthy to see stuff like that. It used to be that only war veterens saw gruesome REAL things like that, and now children can see it.....Some soldiers have PTSD from what they have seen in war, and now young children can see all those things. I'm talking mainly about young kids. I just can't stand the thought of a little kid seeing that. I do respect your opinion, even if we disagree a little on this
BTW.....I like your BOOM DE ADDA
I love that commercial!

I was in my 40's when I saw the "Nick Berg" beheading. It was all over the radio at the time and many were debating if it was real or not; some of it was edited for T.V. news and was played nationally, but so much was edited that it was hard to decide whether it was real or not. So I snooped around and found the video of the beheading in its entirety and proceeded to watch it. Although I didn't have nightmares, my mind indeed suffered a sort of shock that I cannot explain, only that I couldn't get the final image or the act out of my head for days. It was sickening to a degree that made my heart beat faster and my stomach wretch and I repeat...I was in my 40's. To have these shocking images available to children is criminal. Period. It is going to take a hard-azz investigative parent to keep this stuff away from kids today because LiveLeaks is only one site and believe me, there are many that have these sorts of videos available. Many P2P music and video sharing sites have these gory images as well as porn. Are these videos psychologically damaging? I would say yes - to a degree, because like the OP said...you CANNOT unsee and for some reason, when it comes to something either forbidden or unknown, it seems almost impossible to look away. Morbid curiosity takes over like rubbernecking at a bad accident. I learned my lesson the hard way and thank you for the link OP, but I'll pass and just simply agree with you. S&F

That is exactly what it did to me, and as I said I couldn't watch the whole thing but just the SOUND made my stomach knot up. I'm glad you didn't watch it....I put the link there so people could see what I am talking about in case they don't believe how bad it is. If it is hard for we adults to handle it, just imagine what it would do to a young child. The thing about it, is that they didn't even try to blur it or anything, it was in your face close and they had a microphone on the victim so you could hear the horrible sounds he made. I am very upset after hearing that. You are so right about many other sites. It seems there is really no way to protect kids these days and that is scary. I read something once about the serial killer Richard Ramirez....he said he KNEW he would kill people after his uncle told him stories of rape and torture he did to women in Viet Nam, and then killed his girlfriend right in front of Richard....so I would say yes....what you see can affect you. Granted, not everyone will see something and be a serial killer...and I'm sure that was only ONE factor in his case, but vilolence does have an effect on the psyche.

I just watched the video and it wasnt all that bad nothing you wont see watching film footage from WW2 on the history channell. It's just realty better to let the kids watch it and grow up than trying to shelter them unless you plan on raising your kids in a bubble.Thats simply the world that we live in today.

Not my world, and I'll never let it enter my world. Videos like this are good for the only reason that they show us that savages are still around, and everything should be done to protect our children, family, neighborhood, and country from them.

I don't know what to say to that.....if you don't think that is bad, then what is? I have never seen that in a WW2 documentary. The history channel would never show something like that, and COULDN'T show it..... I wonder if you watched the right video??? This is what I mean about being desensitized.....if people don't think this is repulsive, and just accept it as "normal" viewing....something is wrong.

I agree....the only reason I am even discussing it is because I want people to know that their kids could see this so easily. They could just stumble on to it, just as I did.....I wasn't seeking it out, I was just watching some videos, and it was mixed in with the others. So they could come across it without even trying.

Sorry but parents CAN monitor their kids 24/7.

One don't let your kids on the internet every waking moment, block sites such as live leaks which a kid shouldnt be looking at anyway.

It's the parents responsibility to keep their kids away from such topics or images NOT the internet site.

Parents need to take more responsibility for their kids instead of blaming everyone else.

I dont know why parents complain about one thing and yet do nothing themselves to prevent it.

My kids would not be online at all waking hours and their computer would be set up to only visit sites I deem appropriate based on their age.

You can do all that but it's not enough. There are times when they get online when the parent is not there....at a friend's house or whatever. There is no way to safeguard against it unless you follow your kids to other people's homes, and every place they go. I don't have young kids, but if I did, I would be very concerned about what they could come across. You could block all you want on your home computer....but it's OTHER people's computers that may not be blocked,,,,how do you monitor that?
