Your reason for the edit (must be filled out):

Most of the edits I see "no reason given" is in the end tag,

and [must be filled out] seems very explicit. Sometimes I forget. Down the line will there be some sort of penalty.

Its just hard to do sometimes the feature seems odd. I mean I can understand if a comment was made and then stared by another and then edited to show opposite opinion. But usually its just a simple change for me. LOL you got me

The only reason I ever edit anything is because my spelling and grammar is so terrible, it seems a bit redundant to be writing "I cant spell" under every one of my posts

I just forget sometimes, other times if I do remember I try to make it more interesting than it actually was...

I dunno... it may be that data collected; reasons people go back and change what they've written, is worth something to someone, somewhere. This information could then be used to classify certain types of posters.... such as:

82% of semi-conservative believers in UFOs return to edit their posts by a single word, and use correct grammar.

78% of neo-somnambulists return to edit at least 10 words by 2.56703 letters each.

55% of newbies return to edit their introductions by removing 3.1 entire words and replace them with small, furry woodland creatures.

38.6% of those who eat Cap'n Crunch for breakfast end up at the dentist's office where they return to correct entire sentences while under the effects of laughing gas.

This kind of stuff is priceless to those who regurgitate mindless percentages into completely unconnected facts to then sell to large corporations who don't have the slightest idea what is going on out here.

I'll bet those in the ATS front office are making enough off of this info to buy a case of Sailor Jerry's once a year...

I have a theory (I have no idea if it is true) that the feature was originally intended for Mod use., when they were editing other people's posts. "Must be filled out" because Mod actions ought to be explained. In support of this theory, I remember noticing the apparently meaningless "Editby...no reason given" tags on posts by SO long before the feature was implemented for everybody else.

I'm so indecisive and often add or delete parts of my post.

Usually edit due to gremlins causing mischief.. They delight in playing havoc on my mobile...

I'm sure that reason for edit is not as important as the edit itself. Does knowing what was edited really necessary or would it only add worthless information?

Having a place to put the reason for your edit is very cool and it reminds you. If you don't want to say or it's a trivial thing like a left out comma, no biggie...it still lets others know something changed, avoiding things like confusion in poster-quoted material.

Having it be mandatory would be a whole other story. Are there actually plans to make it mandatory?

Me .. I forget a bunch. I get typing fast or I'm trying to concentrate on what I'm doing and since the feature is new to me I forget to do it. Can't teach an old dog .... and all that.

I thought it is already mandatory, at least that's what the wording "must be filled out" implies. Personally, I usually fill it out and it's 99% of the time spelling and grammar. It's not that I'm not that good at it; it's just that I type fast (10 finger system) and typo's are very common when you type fast. Also, no matter how many times you edit a post to remove all typos there will always be some left.
