US, South Korea eye shift in rules of engagement on North Korea

www.csmonitor.com

Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the US armed forces, said after meeting his South Korean counterpart that South Korea as a “sovereign nation” had “every right to protect its people in order to effectively carry out its responsibility.”

That remark was seen here to mean that the US would not stand in the way of South Korean commanders ordering fighter jets to bomb and strafe North Korean bases in case of an attack by North Korea on a target in the South.

In the continuing historical precedence of hiding battle ships behind sex scandals (Julian being the current one), The US is quietly giving the South Koreans the permission to bomb North Korean military bases in response to any future hostilities.

This is huge news and I found it accidentally searching for sources for another post on an unrelated topic. Where are the headlines?

This allows South Korea to escalate anytime they are attacked. In case you did not know, the Korean War has never ended. There was a cease fire on 27 July 1953. May 29, 2007 North Korea withdrew from the armistice. So that means the war is officially still on.

Why should south korea keep taking these bombings and NOT finally get the war over with.

Because only a few die everytime north korea attacks?

Usually only the south koreans get killed.

If georgia did this to russia every now and then to get their goat russia would EAT them alive after just 1 got killed yet alone take it for decades....

They are not only going to allow SK to attack the North, they will assist them.
As well as Japan.

The problem is there is a lot more at stake than just Korea (not to diminish them in any way). When the US pushed through North Korea to China, it was China that pushed us back and almost out of Korea. This is a proxy war, and always has been. The possibilities for escalation are huge.

Man, S.Korea is having some major turmoil on that little peninsula.
Besides the obvious shelling from N.Korea, which S.Korea provoked first(they are still at war).

Let's see:
**S.Korea changes rules of engagement
**SKorean brawl over new 2011 budget
**SKorean 'bird flu' outbreak
**SKorean FMD outbreak in livestock

Here's a sample of the SKorean budget brawl...

And this video did a good job of reflecting whats been going on over in that neighborhood...
