A strong earthquake has occurred, but a tsunami IS NOT expected along the California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, or Alaska coast. NO tsunami warning, watch or advisory is in effect for these areas.

I picked this up in GEE, and watching it come in, the duration of this quake is enormous! Like MINUTES!

Any tsunami generated that close to their coast would have hit by now probably...

Not looking good for indonesia for the past few days... Mount Merapi is on high alert and according to the latest reports, it's on the brink of eruption... now this and the high possibility of tsunami... Not good!

US monitor: 7.5-magnitude quake hits off Indonesia
The Associated Press, Jakarta | Mon, 10/25/2010 10:15 PM | Archipelago
A | A | A |

A strong earthquake has hit off the western coast of Indonesia's Sumatra island and triggered a tsunami watch.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the 7.5-magnitude temblor struck at a depth of 20 miles (30 kilometers) and is centered on a small island off the coast of Sumatra, where a massive earthquake and tsunami hit in 2004.

A tsunami watch was issued for Indonesia, saying waves were possible within a few hundred miles (kilometers) of the epicenter.

However, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said historical data suggest any wave it created would not be destructive.

8.8 Miles... That's shallow. I expect a small Tsunami from this... maybe a few feet.
I worry about stronger aftershocks.. That area is SO dangerously sensitive..

It might only be a 7.2, but there may be a correlation with a Volcano as well.

Well, I don't think it takes a highly intelligent person to look at the obvious question here. How does this 7.7 quake affect a large volcano about to burst? Are these connected....or possibly is there some connection unti now unknown between the volcano and fault? IS this a foreshock to something bigger and nastier involving the volcano? What kind of impact would this have locally and/or globally?

Inquiring minds want to know.....

UPDATE: This quake was updated to a 7.7 by the USGS:

earthquake.usgs.gov...

And seeing it myself come in on GEE, I am not surprised. It was a monster, and the whole earth is still shaking from it.

Well, that's gonna be the big quake activity probably for weeks or months. The earth always seems to rest from real big ones after this much release of energy.

(unless it is a foreshock- which I doubt).

ETA: westcoast... who knows? Except for the people with access to the local seismos. Merapi was going to go anyway- they are evacuating 40,000 people- so this couldn't help any, unless it happened to plug a hole in the volcano, I suppose.
