Russia, Israel eye $360mn drone deal

www.presstv.ir

Russia is to sign a major deal with Israel for a joint production of military drones as Moscow seeks higher-quality arms than those its domestic firms can provide.

An article published by Bloomberg News website on June 11 said the agreement is worth 300 million euros (362 million USD) and will be implemented in two years.

Doron Suslik, a spokesman for Israel Aerospace, said the company is interested in doing business with Russia but refused to detail on potential deals.

Russian Prime Minsiter Vladimir Putin in December announced plans to increase spending on military equipment by 8 percent to $37.2 billion in 2010.

A list by President Dmitry Medvedev for the military's this year needs include at least 30 ballistic missiles, five Iskander air-defense batteries, about 300 “modern” armored vehicles, 30 helicopters, 28 warplanes, three nuclear-powered submarines and a corvette.

In line with the plan, Moscow is to buy $12 billion of arms from European and Israeli companies over the next five years.

Russia, the world's second-biggest arms exporter, ranked 80th in arms imports between 2005 and 2009, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute.

Wow, Russia is now looking to import arms from Europe and Israel. Does it look like they may be gearing up for something or just "modernizing" there capabilities? This seems to go against their usual pride for weapons technology and even export. Could their be a deeper meaning behind this?

I would initially think that if Russia wanted to modernize its arsenal, they would do it themselves... unless they need these weapons in the short term. Why would they need these weapons now, even going to the extent of an unprecedented European weapons package? This just strikes me as a little odd.

while Russia is equivalent or even ahead of West in some sectors , its overall conventional capabilities are lacking . seems by buying drones , Moscow may try to advance their knowledge in Cybernetics and UAV/UCAV operations by reverse engineering the drones

Considering Israel's military is partialy financed by the US, why doesn't Russia just buy from the US?

its a clever move, they acquire the technology and only study and improve it.

the west and israel are not very clever to trust in russia, but they have to do so to keep them from fully aligning with iran. they have to do so that the russians will back up sanctions etc

Considering its an extreamly smart move by Russia. If they purchase Europe's and Israel's weapons they will then know how to defeat them. No more guess work, they have sold thier defence for a euro. Just like Japan, they couldn't take Hawaii by force so after the war they bought it! You got to love a good bargan.

Russia is no fool and never think that they don't back Iran, they do. Should Israel attack Iran, Russia will be all over Israel like white on rice.

Not really, seeing how the technology for export will be much different than that used by the host country.

I foresee a huge russian tank and predator blitz across europe and near asia within the latter years of this decade.

Isn't Russia backing Iran? i wonder why they would buy from Israel other than to reverse engineer.. maybe they will gift it to Iran to modernise their air forces and in exchange Russia gets extra resources for a while...

Win-Win for russia if it is.. reverse engineer for Cybernetics advancements, a strong ally in the middle east and extra resources.
