I think the answer is pretty obvious, but the people who claim to represent Jesus are generally like the other thing. What do you think?

Food for thought.

So, in my astute observation of your post, you're suggesting Jesus would be the opposite of the spectrum? A spit-flinging right-wing warmonger?

I have a hard time considering that, when Jesus was flogged with chains and various sharp objects, crucified, starved and eventually speared to death by Roman soldiers.

Scratch the fact that Jesus is supposedly the son of God or God himself.. I just can't imagine anyone being treated like that and then through the trials of the human mind and the psychology of trauma, and by some miracle not transforming into a peace-loving left-wing hippie.

What about everyone else, all the other people crucified who didn't have the decent liberty of being speared to death and spared the misery to starve to death on wooden sticks for days. Would they not be peace-loving hippies, were they to be reincarnated and asked?

The post should be viewed as having a substantial amount of dry wit and dark humor. Just a little disclaimer for some people...

No, both wrong.

Counterquestion: Do you mean the ICON or do you mean the person that never existed?

Well if Jesus isn't a "peace hippie", what is he then? Just sorta peace-like but not really?

I'll put it like this...American conservatives would HATE Jesus' guts. Jesus was a man of no nonsense peace and spiritual freedom.

Exactly. That is my point. I know a lot of people don't really like my threads at all, but that is the point I'm trying to make. Being crazy for guns, the death penalty, and ruthless capitalism does NOT jive with being for Jesus. sorreeeee!!!!

I suppose as above, so below. Judging by his followers in the Bush years: gun-toting hick.
He tells his followers to sell their clothes to buy weapons:
Luke 22: 35-38.
He also denies that He brings peace, and offers a "holy sword" to tear families apart instead:
Luke 14: 26-27, Matt 10: 34-39.

He curses an innocent fig tree, demon possesses innocent swine, curses the Pharisees for things their FOREFATHERS did to the prophets (Matt 23:31-34) surrounds Himself with armed disciples who cut off people's ears and gets violent in the temple.

Definately not the typical hippy, but many hippies did harbor suppressed fascist tendencies. I'd say He'd be a gun-toting hick in our time.

Worst of all, he brings some abstract spiritual equality for women, and then makes the Law of Moses MORE RESTRICTIVE by forbidding them divorce and remarriage (only in the case of adultery, not physical abuse).

Sorry Donnie, but I'm not able to spell at this moment so I'll make this short. Christians don't follow Christ. They never have and never will. These are the people that will only call up their so called "savior" for a couple of hours on Sunday for church services or when little Johnny needs motivation to hit the possible game winning home run.

They no nothing of what they think they follow. It's monumentally sad when you realize that these "god fearing" people who have absolutely no connection to their savior/jesus start killing those that ACTUALLY think and react like THEIR JESUS.

he was probably more like a strict jew who would be appalled that a new religion which is a bastardization of judaism was formed in his name.

That depends on which Jesus you are referring to.

If you mean pre-crucifixion spreading the word Jesus, then closer to hippie.

If you mean post resurrection/return Jesus - I would lean towards the former.

Return Jesus comes to kick @SS and take names. Sure, he probably wouldn't actually need a gun, but the almighty powers of God give a bit more oomph than a Ak-47. That Jesus is about responsibility and consequences, both non-hippie attributes.

Peace-loving hippie doesn’t even begin to describe what a character like Jesus ought to be. But dude would be best depicted as a schizophrenic gay shaman today.

If he came back, he’d be crucified, AGAIN!

Let me give you a few examples of what you probably need to know.

Jesus opens his ministry as a rather exacting rabbi. He suddenly appears before two groups of fishermen and starkly commands them, “Follow me!” (Mark 1:16-20). He tells a deranged man to shut up and then causes him to writhe in pain (Mark 1:25-26). After Jesus heals a helpless leper, Mark says, “sternly warning him, [Jesus] sent him away at once” (Mark 1:43).

The Greek behind the phrase “sternly warning him” can mean “to denounce harshly, to scold.” And the phrase, “he sent him away at once” is a translation of the Greek verb
ekballo

, which elsewhere is translated “to drive out,” and “to throw out.” A plain reading of the passage suggests that Jesus scolds the man and then throws him out. It is no wonder that some ancient manuscripts read that at the opening of this incident Jesus, after being interrupted by this leper, is moved not with “pity” but with “anger.” That reading at least accords with Jesus' overall demeanor here.

This is not unusual behavior for our Messiah. Jesus throws people out of a room (ekballo again) so he can heal a child, and then he “strictly ordered” witnesses of the miracle to keep quiet (Mark 5:40, 43). He and Peter get into a row, each rebuking the other (Mark 8:32-33). Jesus becomes exasperated with a crowd and his disciples: “You faithless generation, how much longer must I be among you? How much longer must I put up with you?” (Mark 9:19). He curses a fig tree (Mark 11:13-14). He drives people out of the temple area (with a whip, according to John 2:15), overturning tables, and physically intimidating people to prevent their passing through (Mark 11:15-17).

Jesus' attitude toward authorities is hardly respectful. He calls Herod a fox (Luke 13:32), and he castigates the scribes and Pharisees at length, mocking them as “blind guides” and “hypocrites” (Matt. 23:24-25), and practically curses them, saying, “You are like whitewashed tombs, which on the outside look beautiful, but inside they are full of the bones of the dead and of all kinds of filth” (Matt. 23:27).

Such incidents crop up again and again in the Jesus story. That story, in fact, is inexplicable without them. If Jesus was merely loving, compassionate, and kind—if Jesus was only nice—why did both Jews and Romans feel compelled to murder him?

So no in my opinion Jesus was no sissy hippie. But Of all the chastisement he gave it was all constructive and necessary. And in comparison of what is to come, You aint seen nuttin yet.

Explanation: He appears to me to be a masochist as he literally wanted to die for us and in an extremely long and drawn out painfull humiliating way.

He killed a fig tree....the tree loggers would love him.

He turned water into wine and set the course of human history towards meth amphetamine kitchen labs... Drug companies [legal and not] would love him.

He saved a whore from an angry Johns rough mob justice... pimps and whores and brothel owners would love him.

He overturned the money changes tables at the temples... athiests and those on welfare would love him.

I could go on but so far it seems that he would still be loved by 90% of the scum whom the abrahamic faith run media love to disparage and take a huge dump on!

Personal Disclosure: Jesus is a NAZI! He supports his fathers kingdom 100% which is clearly a state of being a Nationalistic Zealot and he promotes a socialist agenda and therefore he is a National+Socialist AKA a Nazi!

My take on this :

Jesus was the good guy..
He tried to educate the people and God didnt like it..
God loves war, God is Satan...

Because if Jesus were to live, God would have lost his power and so he had to be destroyed, he did survive I think, and died later on..

It is like the DaVinci Code, the Vatican rather not like it if the bloodline of Jesus were to emerge and claim back his world..

Sooooo, Satan needs the wars to keep people afraid of wars and terror, oh, I mean God...

My conclusion : Jesus goodguy, God Evil.....

I think that was more metaphorical. He was saying that people should not be so family centered that they did not care about their fellow man.

I'd say in Matt 10:34 He was saying that kids who followed Him should prepare to clash with their disaproving parents. There seems to be no limit to the violence this might entail. Anyone who said this today would be labelled the next Manson and surely arrested.

Where He must have been metaphorical was when He said: "The meek shall inherit the earth". If there's any truth to this, especially in Christianity, somebody must please explain it.

At least He did a lot for "family values" by forbidding divorce, and thereby forced generations of women to stay in abusive marriages, unless their husbands were proven to be adulterers first. Turn the other cheek for the abuser to slap again, indeed.

But, hey He also comes to send millions of men, women and children to hell because they didn't believe in Him, or because they slipped up in some minor belief about the Trinity, or whether Jesus was created or with God (Himself) at Creation or such ethereal nonsense (depending which sect of Christianity one follows).
