Thanks for posting this - I saw it on my eQuake but can't start new threads yet. Also noticed there was another one a minute ago in Papua New Guinea (5.6M).

Could someone explain how the depth of the earthquake effects the outcome? I see it all of the time and I'm not sure if the shallower earthquakes are more dangerous or not. I would assume so but I'm not a geologist. Thanks...

Seems like a seperate event, not an aftershock.

Presages a general movement in the area perhaps?

Generally speaking, shallower quakes are more dangerous than deep ones.

But which direction is important, too, i.e., lateral movement vs up-and-down movement. Undersea quakes with up-and-down movement generate tsunamis. Lateral ones tend not to.

Shallow-focus earthquakes are much more common than deep-focus ones, and they are usually larger, which in turn makes them more dangerous.

These appear to be seperate quakes,
Papua is on the very East end of the Archipelago and western Sumatra is on the West side. About 50 degrees of longitude between the two.

PEACE,
RK
