Officially, the UK's population stands at around 61 million, although the true figure is almost certainly a couple of million higher - a legacy of the poll tax days when many people did not want to be counted on official censuses, and also of the fact that hundreds of thousands of foreigners are living here illegally and also do not wish to be counted.

See full article for complete story.

I thought this was a very well written, quite unbiased view of the uk's soaring population standards, worthy of a place on ATS. I agree with what Hanlon says, that immigration can't and shouldn't be curbed, but it needs to be controlled more lest we lose our already shrinking countrysides even quicker.

What do you all think?

I will say what I have always said - if a nation loses a war, it then infiltrates and wins.

It is a wellknown fact, and proved, that if a country has fought another country and lost that war, they wait for a while, and then move into that country.

This is a fact. History has proved it.

Sorry, I don't quite understand this.

The date on the article is today's yet the article tates it was last updated 16th July 2009, 10 months ago.

Your headline states that the Home Secretary implies that the UK is overpopulated, yet upon reading Alan Johnson states that he 'doesn't worry about a 70 million population' and that he is 'happy' to live in a multi-cultural society.

The title of your thread is highly inaccurate.

This is a columnists view on old news, I remember the furore over Johnson's comments last year....this is old hat and incorrect.

What is reality?, a dodgy article from the Daily Mail. Thats the problem in this country too many people get their reality brought to them daily by the Mail.

Of course it matters.

The facts, as insinuated by the thread headline are incorrect.

If someone wants to start a thread discussing immigration levels, the benefits and effects of etc then please do and I'll gladly contribute but please at least take the timend effort to get the title of the thread correct and supply sources that support the claim.

The source is a columnists opinion of a 10 month old story....that is not fact!

Over populated my arse.

On Google earth, pick any UK city then from above view scroll along to another city or town.
Plenty of room you will find. Not just UK,try any country you like.
Strain on resources is the other BS.Only made that way by the greedy.

Always good for attempting to get votes at election times and for stirring up negativity among people.

I'm from Texas and have a good idea about how immigration can change things. You say "that immigration can't and shouldn't be curbed, but it needs to be controlled".

Good luck on that friend! From what I can tell from my side of the pond, yall are becoming less "English" by the minute. I know its getting bad here in Texas, we just have a larger area to fill. With immigration being what it is there PLUS EMMIGRATION, yall will be muslim and African in a period of a decade or so.

Buckingham palace with minerettes.....shudder.

I am a firm believer that when immigration (illegals should be shot on arrival) levels begin to dilute the indiginous population (lack of assimilation) the gate should be not closed....WELDED THE HELL SHUT!

I would like to see some of GB sometime while it is still Anglo-Saxon/Kelt/Gael/ and Cymry! Both of our nations are going to hell.

Side note.

Saw you were from Liverpool.

Congrats on the sale of the Reds! Maybe with "Agents" Hicks, Gillet, and Benitez gone yall can come back and kick ass! I live in a divided home. My wife is a Liverpool supporter and I"m Chelsea. We unite in our hatred of Man U and affection for New Castle!

hundreds of thousands of foreigners

The daily mail regularly lumps legal immigrants like me in with illegal immigrants of which there are far far fewer.

The vast MAJORITY of immigrants into Britian are from the EU and EEC countries and therefore have every right to live and work here.

Sorry, I don't recall us being at war with most of Eastern Europe or the many British Commonwealth Countries that most of our immigrants are coming from these days.

If you are referring to the large Asian and Black populations here, most of them were invited over after the WWII (they were on our side BTW) to help rebuild the infrastructure of the country.

As for the current situation, I agree that strict control must be put on immigration. Unfortunately any EU citizen is legally allowed to migrate to anywhere in the EU, looking for work.

ETA:

When I say unfortunately, I mean it is unfortunate when trying to control the mass influx of immigrants, as it makes this harder to achieve, not that it's unfortunate that they are coming.

Done a bit of googling and it seems you need around 1 acre of land to feed 1 person.

Britain's land area is approx 60 million acres, although some of this land is going to be lakes and land not suitable for growing anything on.....And it may also include Northern Ireland in the figures and so would need a further reduction.

So the conclusion i have come to is Britain is overpopulated.

Of course we are overpopulated! I don't know where you live but where I've lived up until last year when I moved it was a complete joke. It some days would take me the best part of an hour to travel 11 miles to my place of work, such was the congestion on the roads and sheer volume of traffic. In the city I lived in, people could not find places to rent either because a) the prices due to demand were too high for them to afford or b) groups of immigrants were snapping up the rental properties.

When one of the former Home Secretaries announces a 20 year policy of effectively concreting over and urbanising the south-east and destroying the green belt you have to despair!

I've said this before. Look at Japan, a country the same size as the UK, an island nation, but double the population. They are one of the most overcrowded societies on earth, yet strangely, they get by. Why? Because the Shinto religion dictates that forest and woodland is sacred and must not be chopped down or destroyed. Hence why two thirds of Japan is left undeveloped. So much of the Japanese populace accepts things and are happy living in high rise areas in coastal cities and conurbations.

Why can't we be the same? What is the problem with developing brown field sites over green belt?

And finally, yes, we can't afford to let more people in. Reason being, there are some cities now where the infrastructure is buckling under the sheer weight of traffic volume due to political shortsightedness and shorttermism. Where, do you suggest, do we put everyone?

I agree with you about those motivated by greed. But, the only way we as a nation are going to not have deep social unrest over the coming decades is if we drastically improve infrastructure and move away from concreting over the green belt and look at developing more brown field sites in towns and cities.

I'm confused with your post mate, First you stated we are overpopulated in the paragraph quoted below:

Of course we are overpopulated! I don't know where you live but where I've lived up until last year when I moved it was a complete joke. Then you write how Japan has double the amount of people that we have:

I've said this before. Look at Japan, a country the same size as the UK, an island nation, but double the population. So much of the Japanese populace accepts things and are happy living in high rise areas in coastal cities and conurbations.

And then you post this:

Why can't we be the same?

Or are you saying yes we are overpopulated but its ok, We can adapt to live like the Japanese ?

Rampant immigration will crush England you and you only have yourselves to blame. You might as well tag every name of every city with " stan " starting with Londinistan. The queen will be made to wear a burka and answer to the mullahs.

Dont think a stiff upper lip will get you out of this one England. So long and farewell.

Sorry, that was a typo, had a few problems with 'resetting pages' and ended up losing half of the title, didn't notice until you mentioned it. was supposed to say 'secretary 'isn't losing sleep' or something.. i forget now

anyway, point was just to raise an awareness that the issue was brought up, i spotted in the newspaper yesterday.. i have no idea why the dates are all jumbled up though?

As for as where I live is concerned, my city (Liverpool) isn't exactly overburdened with people. Parts of the city are under heavy regeneration to tear old, abandoned houses down and build new ones, the empty delapidated houses numbering of at my guess at least 100. This could possibly change in the future of course.

I think the places like London and birmingham are feeling the squeeze of the problem most.

But the line 'Londonistan' etc is a bit unnecessary, you can't simply blame one particular nation for all immigration, even if the middle East does supply many of our immigrants, it's still only a portion.
