The same could be said, but in reverse. So what if it makes the gays unhappy to have the "straight agenda" pushed down their neck.

The answer is simple...tolerance!

We tolerate different religions, different cultures, different political ideologies, etc...

Yes but Captain Spock said: "the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the one" and he died!! That young lady didn't die did she? (She mighta, had another lesbian showed up in the same tuxedo!!)

Yes...but Captain Kirk said...

Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984)

Captain Spock: My father says that you have been my friend. You came
back for me.
Kirk: You would have done the same for me.
Captain Spock: Why would you do this?

Kirk: Because the needs of the one... outweigh the needs of the many.

The flames are rolling in and i seem to have misplaced my fire extinguisher. Darn. Thats the glory of opinions, we are all entitled to them, yes even little old me. Does my opinion matter? Hell no. But neither does any of yours.

We are at war with one another over something that will NEVER be completely solved. Just small battles won. While some may total disagree with me, i still think the way that i choose too. Individualism. Its great.

So let the flames roll on... All i can say is where the hell is Howie Long when i need him?

O and one more thing..... DAMN all of you ATSers with your openmindedness and outside the box thinking. How could you do something like that on a site like this? Its just pittiful!

(and before you ask, yes, you can use that for your sig box)

]From the original article:

The ACLU said district officials told McMillen she and her girlfriend wouldn't be allowed to arrive together, that she would not be allowed to wear a tuxedo, and that she and her girlfriend might be asked to leave if their presence made any other students "uncomfortable."

And even if you follow all our rules we might ask you to leave, just because we really don't like your type! - SunnyDee - sarcasm

Not trying to bag on Mississippi, but this article comes up right under the current story on Yahoo, seems our little prom night Rosa Parks will be in for a fight, she's certainly not in California, or Arizona or Conneticut or... you get my drift.
this is from NPR:

Mississippi integrated its public schools in 1970, but segregation still haunts parts of the culture. One example of this could be found at Charleston High School. The Delta town had maintained a system of separate proms — organized privately — for black and white students.

As far back as 1997, actor Morgan Freeman, a Charleston local, offered to pay for the dance if everyone could go. This year, officials finally accepted the offer. A Canadian film crew led by Paul Saltzman documented the event for the upcoming Prom Night in Mississippi.

www.npr.org...

PS: switch this story to "all green-eyed people can not go to prom. It has been our school rule since 1951. No exceptions." Ya think maybe eventually some green-eyed people might make a stink ala Rosa Parks?

I personally like the title Prom Night Rosa Parks- and yes my opinion is just as valid as Mr kitty above, or Dr. Love's for that matter. Hope a few of you never have a gay child, your hate makes me literally ill.

"She should have kept her mouth shut."
"She shouldn't have made a fuss."
"She should have abided by the rules."
etc.

Many prejudices and discriminatory practices that are viewed as unacceptable by our society today became so because people challenged the rules.

Everywhere there is discrimination, everywhere people have their civil rights violated because it makes others uncomfortable, a mighty stink, better yet a premium, class A, grade 1 yardena should be raised.

These girls might be a drop in the ocean but they can also be an example for other gay students.

I hate dresses. It should NOT be recquired that females wear dresses and males wear tuxedos. Formal attire is formal attire to me it does not matter who is wearing it.
I worked in a tux shop and I measure a girl for a tux before the school didn't care because she went with a guy.
This all because she is a lesbian. This is discrimination and should not be allowed in a Public school.

Oh for cryin' out loud! I haven't cracked on being homosexual this whole thread. I simply gave the most common sense approach to the solution for this/these girl/s.

We live in a world where battles have to be chosen wisely and fought even more wisely, this was not one of those examples.

Right on man.

I did not go because of that reason. I don't wanna waste money on that or wear some silly "formal" cloths.

A lot of my friends and I instead, had our own little private get together. Which was 100x funner than the public one anyways.

So yeah it is sort of grandstanding when considering this aspect.

I never threw a fit about wanting to get into their prom, why? Because thats not "my thing".

This is one of the many occasions that are pretty much a woman's thing. Like Valentines. Men don't care as much about this. They'd probably rather go to an alumni football game. Just because she's gay doesn't make her any less a woman. Thus SHE wanted to go.

In your opinion its not worth fighting. Opinions vary. In my opinion this is a battle worthy of fight.

And you may not have cracked on anyone for being gay, but you sure did crack on their pie holes to stay shut. (only the gay girls pie holes not the normal students pie holes).

And why should they remain silent again? Oh because they speak of a gay issue.

This might be construed as cracking on gays, because the implication is the gay girl needs to shut her pie hole she is causing trouble by opening it.

Thanks tator, was going to point that out to Dr. Love, that his opinion of what is worth fighting for is just that-his opinion.

Unfortunately we don't have every snippet of this story, otherwise we could really get down to the nitty gritty and figure out just how it came about that she wanted to go to her prom with her friend and what she might have said to someone at school about how excited she was and what she wanted to wear, that led to a rumormill of gossip that finally landed on the ears of the school and school board who confronted her and really started a mess she would not have wished on anyone...oh it's just too bad we don't have all the extra info!

I am normally quite conservative leaning, but this one just pisses me off!

There is no reason for the School District to do this, other than to push their "in a perfect world" ideals.

There are millions of gays and lesbians in the U.S. people, this is 2010... not 1950! It's time to take a deep breath, drop your personal bias, and just let people be the way they are!

Something interesting in a CNN article about this issue. I'll print the quote from the ACLU official.

article

"Itawamba school officials are trying to turn [McMillen] into the villain who called the whole thing off, and that just isn't what happened," said Kristy Bennett, Legal Director of the ACLU of Mississippi. She's fighting for everyone to be able to enjoy the prom.

"The government, and that includes public schools, can't censor someone's free expression just because some other person might not like it."

Think about it. That last sentence about what the government can't do (my bolding)?

Isn't that - word for word - exactly what the government in fact does by imposing so-called "political correctness" on all of us - with the blessing of the ACLU?

Talk about blatant hypocrisy!

Look at it this way, she could have kept her mouth shut and went with her girlfriend and other friends..... From what I recall tuxedos were to be worn by men and dresses by women...

So the fact she made a big stink about going against the school rules, then she went to an outside group for help, caused the school to cancel the prom... Cause and effect...

It's not a stink if nobody smells it. Apparently these school administrators have dog like senses that are offended by gay teens.

WTF do a few adults care who walks through the door with who, or eats where?.. heck they should be happy this chick wants cover her body in a tux, rather than a prom thong with pasties that would send any adult who accidentally looked at her, or photographed her, to get raided for child porn.

She should have kept her mouth shut and stayed in the closet, rather than just be honest who she is?.. sad dude, really. Youth is wasted on the young, many of these gay teens probably don't even really know who or what they are yet.. whats the point of singling out kids who might be different? to cleanse them of gayness? turn them on to men? help guide her fashion sense to gender appropriate?.. lmao.. there is no point to canceling an entire prom.. there is no harm or danger, just a few dumb opinions being enforced.

Good point you make. The school was out of line.

Why not just show up to the prom without announcing it to the world? Why does one HAVE to wear a tuxedo? Just wear a dress and keep your piehole shut. Girls show up together all the time, even in my day.

Quoted from the end of the article:

A Feb. 5 memo to students laid out the criteria for bringing a date to the prom, and one requirement was that the person must be of the opposite sex.

If all the problems you have is some snotty kid who wants to be a rebel and a freakin dance is cancelled then you have NO problems...

Yet another example of the MSM using some idiot to get the attention of idiots to keep them blind and divided....

That is who YOU voted for, and what you have to put with, and is just nothing compared to the sheer scale of true suffering in this world that you wont acknowledge because of some punk kid...

USA grow up!..... The world is bigger than this crap... Its a shame you dont get this wound up about something REAL... In the end of the day this will be toilet paper in a few days, why not ignore it? Ignore these idiots.. They will go away much like internet trolls if you don't feed them... Screw em...

My dad gave me the belt when i played up as a kid.. Did me no harm.. Maybe a good slap would have sorted this out too.....

Grow a pair America.... And look beyond yourselves..

I think you're missing the point here. This isn't just about a prom getting canceled because they refused to allow a lesbian to do her thing. They punished the whole class to restrict the rights of an individual that are guaranteed by the Constitution and the BoR.

As usual, and no doubt by design, you miss the point I was making entirely.

Maybe you don't have an ACLU in canada. And maybe even if you do, the government and the ACLU don't collaborate to limit your freedoms just because someone, somewhere might not like it. But we do have that in the U.S. I called it hypocrisy because the ACLU is caught here using that argument both ways.

You can't wear any sort of religious symbolism, or say anything about Christmas, for example, in a school - even if it represents what you deeply believe in because someone might not like it.

Simple concepts, really.

Obviously this thread shows people do care about these issues, so perhaps that’s why the media reports this stuff and it isn’t part of a huge conspiracy.

USA grow up!.....

Maturity is not defined by what issues you may spend a few minutes or a day commenting on.

The world is bigger than this crap...

Did anyone taking part in this discussion say differently?

I’m sure everyone knows that, but thanks for your wisdom.

Its a shame you dont get this wound up about something REAL...

How wound up are the people responding?

I don’t see them running out into the streets in protest; they’re discussing it on a forum.

I’m sure they also get wound up over issues you think are worthy of discussing.
