Some unemployment benefits could dry up Monday. Newly laid-off workers wouldn't get federal help with health insurance premiums. Road and transit bills could go unpaid, Medicare payments to doctors would stay high and rural satellite reception could be affected, all thanks to Sen. Jim Bunning's decision to block legislation that would keep alive a host of programs that expire Sunday night. The Kentucky Republican, according to several sources, told Democratic colleagues "tough s---" Thursday when they tried to get him to change his mind.

news.yahoo.com...

Unbelievable. I cannot believe this man. I absolutely guarantee that this man has voted FOR military spending. I guarantee this man has voted FOR deficit spending in the past.

Yes he just gave a gigantic F U to many people who are already hurting. Want to cut spending? WHY DON'T you eliminate your own pay Bunning? Selfish arrogant bastard!!!!!

More of this is headed or way. Corporate tax cuts..tax cuts for the rich....yet middle class and the poor are going to get hammered.

I don't know who this guy thinks he is...but he is playing with fire.

We were just mentioning in another thread how unemployment benefits were cusioning the overall failure of our economy...If the checks stop coming this will spell disaster, aka, riots in the streets...

Personally, I don't think they will stop the checks from coming. Right wrong or otherwise, the unemployment benefits are preventing much larger problems.

He also said "tough sh*t", and that's a quote, when asked about the suffering and desperation to the 1.2 million people this would effect. This guy is a real piece of work.

edited to correct 1.4 million to 1.2...sorry, I shouldn't rely on my memory for numbers!

i'm not defending Bunning... but

everyone has to think about it... He had a lot of people before him to
vote against the proposal before him... he is just the vote that put the vote into the trash-bin --- Bunning did not by himself overrule the other part of part of the Senate votes...he had a large enough group that voted in the 'Nay' column before him

lets get real
lets inspect Why there was a large enough group in the Senate to vote NO for a unemployment extension measure, 3 have already been passed before, (but probably without hidden Pork - which may have been the cause to send this measure to the trash can)

I would remark, but ultimately my feelings of contempt for this guy will only come down to angry caveman like grunts, banging sticks, and probably end with me throwing my coffee cup through the computer screen.

Well, I fully support a hooverville shantytown right on this guys lawn...let the desperate 1.4 million people live right outside his home...make his life a unholy hell to reconsider the errors of his way.

Ultimately I don't like any government programs...BUT, as much BS spending as our government, both federal and state does on ridiculous things I'm OK with unemployment benefits for now. There are so many other things they can cut out of their budgets to help out.

Well, it would be interesting to see if there is more to it than this 30 day extension but this guy doesn't even have support from his fellow republicans...even republican leader Mitch McConnell is against him. He's a lone obstructionist (how odd!) in this one and probably is just looking for a little attention from his folks back in Kentucky. Or is this the new damage control the GOP is instituting in their attempts to derail everything?

My family relies on unemployment and my mom will only be receiving 3 more unemployment checks and then she can not get any more. We live in Florida and the unemployment rate is nearly 12%. There are about 3 jobs every day in the newspaper at most! What are we going to do? What are millions of people like us going to do?

Sure millions of Americans can be homeless, starve to death, and die of illnesses but as long as we can continue with our nation building and $700 some billion dollar military budget its all fine right!? You know why this son of a b*tch is doing this, it's because he is not seeking re-election so he decided he wants to f*** up as many peoples lives as possible before he goes. This is typical of the Republicans, let the Americans suffer so we can slaughter more and more innocent muslims! These politician need to be taught a lesson, a lesson they will never forget! Let's hang this s.o.b. and let it be a warning to all politicians who decide its better to screw over Americans to collect corporate cash than do what they are supposed to. REVOLUTION! REVOLUTION! REVOLUTION!

Edit to add: Let's hang Glenn Beck too and let that be a lesson to FOX News and all other right-wingers!

They have been ITCHING for a revolution anyway.

I think the people will probably comply now.

Start digging through the survival forum threads now, just in case.

Be prepared for anything!

Having things get crazy with Obama in the white house and a democrat majority in congress may be a calculated political move.

If they cut off millions of people things could get very ugly.

The problem is, once it starts and spreads it may be extremely difficult to stop.

Maybe the republican party wants the system to fail the people.

Then it will all be Obama's fault!

I would have defended him too... but he was so disrespectful. He cussed at people. I have no idea how he became a senator

I think the worst idea is to piss off the unemployed. They have nothing else to do, so why not start a revolution? There are about 30,000,000 unemployed in America(this is including the actual unemployment rate).

While I am not currently on unemployment I do know what's it's like to run out of money and have no food the last of the month. I get pretty ornery when I'm hungry. Multiply that by 1.2 million people....food stamps just isn't enough for anyone to make it and being homeless burns a lot of calories too. Ah, I'm just so frustrated and heartbroken for the middle class, the unemployed and the poor in this country. Hungry people are going to make fearsome fighters for social justice....I hope. Some of these republicans need to skip a week or so of eating and see how it feels.

Hang in there guys. Guys like Bunning are not going to last in this new economy. He's living in another time.

What a patriot!!!

At least he said no to the socialisms.

People need to go and create jobs and the business's that are the future of tomorrow.
Wealthfare just makes lazy people lazier which is why they are unemployed in the first place. Thank god this man stands for freedoms, my hates off to him!

good bles America!

Edited for spelling
