This is one of my favorite albums of all time. Given to me a couple years ago by a friend, I still find new things to like about it.
I was told that this album is the result of the anxiety and excitement felt by Japanese people entering the 1980's. Western Culture and globalization changed Japanese culture rapidly on all fronts. Utilizing both traditional Japanese instrumentation and modern rock music Haniwa-chan blends the feeling of cultural displacement and disassociation. Kanashibari is also the Japanese term for sleep paralysis - when your mind is awake but your body is trapped where it is. A possible allusion to the cultural change felt in Japan in the 1980's.
