Oh my, sounds serious. Well, as my mother always said, you get what you pay for.

If you'd like to educate me on how else I've been "dropping the ball" lately in your opinion please feel free to do so via U2U. I will be courteous and receptive to courtesy. Otherwise let's try to keep this non-personal, mmmmkay?

on the flip side, it's good to see someone using the gold standard.

Perhaps this story should not be dismissed so rapidly. Although many articles on the net that relate the same story refer back to or echo the OP's source, not all of them do. The following is one example. Interestingly it puts a more subtle slant on the story, suggesting the initial plan is to issue the coins in a bid to raise funds for UN projects:

NEW YORK (Commodity Online): Now, the United Nations is also lured by the glitter of gold. In a bid to raise money for its projects, United Nations has licensed the minting of gold bullion coins bearing its logo to provide a public option world savings currency.

Oro gold coins are hoped to contribute to making the UN better funded by 2015, with revenue rising by ten to 15 per cent. The coins are set to be produced in Europe and then distributed globally, with any licensee able to produce such bullion under contract.

There is a danger that if the US dollar weakens, there will be a strong move towards the Oro. In turn, this could potentially drive the value of the coin up to a level where international governments will not allow it to be circulated...

Source

Funny thing is, it's not exactly subtle is it? Who do they think they're kidding?..

Good find! Perhaps the article above showing school kids and others handing the coin out is just one of the ways the UN decided to handle the introduction... through the kids.

At any rate, this is clearly not just some HOAX as people love to call things around here. Sometimes the story is just not that simple and cut-and-dry.

Here we go folks, one-world currency ready or not. Made of pure gold, issued by the UN. Pretty picture at link, too.

I thought about putting this in the economic ("global meltdown") forum, but I think the implications are wide-ranging enough that it deserves "breaking news" treatment.

For one, it is the first time the United Nations has ever tried to create a one-world currency, and this has implications far beyond the current economic situation or even economics in general. It represents a massive power-shift on a global level, and has all sorts of geostrategic implications, including how people pay for (and fight for) energy sources, how world trade is conducted and settled, how this could impact the dollar and other national currencies, the potential destablizing effects, etc.

The other urgent thing is that THIS WILL ACTUALLY HAPPEN. THis is not the UN "mulling" or "speculating" issuing a currency...its something that's actually going down. The speed and unexpected nature of this announcement is apt to raise a more than a few eyebrows...or gun-barrels, for that matter.

It's only from the examiner and the other articles reference this article, but I can believe it. For one the news that didnt' get big attention 3 weeks ago was China is not going to buy anymore US debt, but the markets kept going. And this news, what is going on. It's that the world is coming at the US from all sides in order to get rid of this funny green paper. They know that the US economy is going to implode because OUR ECONOMY IS UNSUSTAINABLE. We have so much debt and so much of our currency flooding the planet that it should have happened years earlier. Just like how in ancient times gold coins where being shaved and diluted in order for it to go further so is the dollar and essentially other currencies. There is no way we can fund our legacy liabilities and our economy unless we bring back industry, an industry that is based on essentially science fiction for lack of a better word. We should start to building our infrastucture for the future. The old economy of building a widget and selling it isn't possible anymore for the amount of money that is required for a US employee.

Start to build the future, our future is to research and develop new technologies, new infrastructure as mentioned before, new power sources, and even work toward orbital manufacturing and space. Things must move on, and this is an opportunity for us to move into the 21/22nd century before anyone else gets ahead of us. Nature punishes lifeforms that stagnate or don't change, maybe we are being punished in a roundabout way. This is a clear opportunity to push through a type of Manhattan project for the US again. They have been working on fusion for decades and are still having issues. Put the resources behind it fully and more minds and see what you will get. If there's a will there is a way, and I believe it. There is just so many people in power both political and economically that don't want this stuff to be brought into being unless they can make money. If they can't make money, then it lays fallow. That's the problem with "free market" it's possible for a country to become an oligarchy (which ours have become). Then better rocket science can be found also.

Actually, a one ounce golden eagle says it's worth $50. Spot right now is $1105 an ounce. Shows you just how pathetically worthless America currency has become.

Meesterjojo, let me start off by saying that I agree with you completely. That said, you don't honestly expect me to believe for an iota of a second that the UN would ever forewarn anyone about a huge change like this do you? You don't honestly expect that Google has access to every single document in existence do you? :-)

While I think these coins aren't what we'll be moving to, I don't believe we'll be forewarned. It'll go down like the currency change in North Korea that happened recently.

I just sent you a U2U on the many reasons you have failed recently. Enjoy.

To all the jerks: The story IS real, the source might have blown it out of proportion, but the UN does indeed mint (or contracts the minting) of Gold Coins.. It's my understanding the UN is not using it's own source of Gold, rather, you pay a premium price for the coin (above market value per ounce of gold) .. the Mint gets the price of the Gold via market prices, or probably a little less, and the UN keeps the marginal difference between retail and value .. the extra funds then help fund the UN's er.. activities.. Surprisingly it's not rocket science...

So .. before we get our panties in a bunch and start screaming about how bad people fail for not "researching" I would advise you research your self.. nothing more embarrassing then telling someone to research, then fail to research, and get proven wrong. Makes you look like an ass. And then bigger jerks like me get to wade into the fun and make fun of everyone.

By the way Silent thunder as usual good thread.

uh huh, yea.... & these "gold" bullions are really gonna be gold. Hell, our penny in America isn't even worth a penny in copper. So much for face value. Mods, do your damn job. What a waste of posting space. People kill for paper currency today. Imagine what they'll do for gold. Boy I wonder about you crazy ATSers.

Mass hoarding creates shortage. Gold outlawed. All people will be forced to give up their gold. Back to monopoly money.

Although I tend not to play in these areas, I couldn't resist, since one of my favorite Organizations, the U.N., seemingly are invloved with this, according to the article.

This is was the Intro Link Offered.

UN to produce bullion coins as world currency
December 15, 7:38 PM

The announcement by the United Nations this week that it will license the minting of silver and gold bullion coins bearing the UN logo

Now seeing this, one would ass-u-me we could verify this, but despite the various links to the article, I couldn't see anything remotely indicating this was factual.

As I noted, I just love the U.N. and it's quasifacist, semisocialist, communistic tendancies, so I linked into one of my "Favorites" the U.N. General Assembly Resolutions for this 64th sitting of Misfits and Dictators and despite a serious glance, I was unable to locate anything about this at all.

The OP Suggests it was this Fall, implying this session, but I didn't notice it reviewing the resolutions todate.

For your own review

www.un.org...

Maybe I missed it, but it seems this is a fabrication, although not all that farfetched.

Ciao

Hoax

Why is this even being discussed? There are currently several major nations on the world stage who would resolutely REFUSE any attempt to usurp their own currency. Especially one coming from an organization widely percieved to be in Western in nature.

This is not going to happen any time soon, I wish people would drop this and focus on more important issues.
If it is ever a real threat, it won't happen behind closed doors and it won't be a surprise. There will be plenty of time to protest about it (not that any of you will, you'll just be keyboard warriors while expecting others to actually work).

here here,
Double eagle USA 20 dollar coin circa 1908
33 grammes of 90% pure gold
1105 plus plus dollars today, still way undervalued imo.

To all of you members screaming HOAX...
I seem to remember at last meeting of the G8 leaders, all of the attendees were given souvenir test samples of a Virtual United Future World Currency.

The UN could never issue a currency that would threaten the dominance of the American dollar. The US would simply veto it. It is not in our best interests. Oh, wait. The Kenyan is President for now. Never mind...
