Slow internet - Nationwide?

This past weekend I noticed a major bog-down in internet speeds, and overall general connectivity. I normally get about an 8mbps download speed, but lately i've had to let even a 4 minute youtube video download for at least 10-20 minutes. This problem isn't isolated to this computer; my girlfriend's laptop and my office computer is affected equally.

After noticing someone else in the same town had speed issues, but on a different ISP, I started asking around.

It appears that this problem is nationwide. Different people in several different states from all regions of the country are reporting serious issues in both speed and reliability.

I am hoping someone 'in the know' can weigh in on the cause of these problems. Perhaps another fiber backbone was cut? Did a DNS root server go down somewhere? Or is the issue more sinister in nature. A friend hypothesized that perhaps the internet traffic is going more slowly because TPTB are deliberately slowing down connection speeds to make the "viral videos" of the protests are making their way across the internet. The internet is the "Town Hall" of the Colonial period and a major communications medium.

If they can shut down the video transmissions on the internet it would go a long way towards "silencing" the populace.



Are you guys noticing really bad slowdowns too?

It seems mine was slower than usual as well. Then again, I have internet access through the cable company and it's not that great anyway.

Our cable was down for a few hours last night. And I keep getting booted off Facebook.

Don't know if that helps at all.

Not sure about nationwide...but 4 minute youtube movies would not play all the way through yesterday..They would have to pause and buffer after a certain amount of seconds. It was weird.

YES!!! I didn't know that it was such a wide spread problem though so I'm really glad you started this thread! I actually called my cable company to complain today because my internet has been so slow since Saturday. I too have noticed it the most when trying to watch videos. I'm surprised to see that it isn't just here. I figured it was just my ISP! I wonder what's going on. It's getting old because I pay to have butt kickin fast internet and I'm not getting my money's worth and it sucks!

That's what mine is doing too. I figured that it might be youtube, so I tried google video. Same deal.

Heck even the porn sites have videos that load slower than usual.

So far I have friends reporting the same bottlenecks from eight different states and six different ISPs.

Weird thing is as I clicked on to reply it took 10 seconds for this page to load. Normally a takes maybe a second or two. I used to be on a dataline which was very very slow. I bumped up my speed to cable which is supposed to be 10 times faster but it seems to be only 2 times faster.
I have noticed that you videos now take a few seconds to load and sometimes they would pause reloading mid video.
I have had cable before this and it was very fast about 5 times faster than it is currently. When I first get cable everything took a second to load. Even DSL was faster. It may be because the internet is cheaper and more people have it now. I know 4 years a go I did a paper that less than 60% -70% of american households was connected to the internet. I am sure by now it is more like 90%.
I also noticed that for months I have problems with my internet, cable and phone. We have had a lot of storms this year so it could be that one of the storms disrupted something major and it is still not 100% fixed. I would say the problems began in Feburary 2009.
I am in Kansas City,Mo by the way. I have had 3 different modems and 6 techs come out since February 2009.

I hope that it is nothing sinister.

I just assume the servers are overloaded and everyone needs new hardware.

Maybe thats what they want us to think?

My AT&T DSL has gone down several times since the weekend, and our work DSL Extreme has failed a couple time. Never had any trouble with either before. The web was slow yesterday, I live in Los Angeles.

Mine is and has been running nice and fast as always.

Could be because I live on a military installation...............The plot thickens.

I'm getting 22mb down, 8mb up right now. Which is slightly above average for me. I did have a moment night before last for about an hour where my connection was down. It was late night, so it could have been them upgrading something.

AT&T DSL sucks. I was a loyal customer of theirs for years. Then they came in with these upgrade plans, and my connection was never the same. I upgraded and all that stuff, but all I got in return was tons of downtime and even slower than normal rates. Even after going back to the regular plan, I had extremely slow internet.

They finally ticked me off to the point where I dumped AT&T completely, phone and all. I am completely happy I did it.

I live in Florida, and I have not had any problems, but I also live on a military installation........hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Go to dslreports.com/speedtest and run a test, at different times of the day.

No, that's just what made me notice. My internet speed can be a little spotty at times (although never lasting more than a day)so I never did go to speedtest.net, dslreports, or toast. What made me start asking around was that I noticed that *all* the websites have been slow.

So I started asking around, personally.

The samething is happening in North and South California and several people in an online seminair I am going to everyday are having the same problem. It got so bad we had to set up a phone line so we could call in and have the thing!
The host also has Att and even got on the phone and tried to get someone out to fix it..no go yet. So went and started calling around and EVERYONE said it would take a few WEEKS before they could get to her.
So it isn't just you guys because there are people from all over the USA and world in this thing and they are all having issues with it. Someone pulled the wrong plug somewhere !

I too am really glad you started this thread netwarrior Same thing happened to me yesterday.. the slowdowns today seem to me gone though.

Usually I have a decently fast Internet connection, my sites load within seconds, and my latently and ping is low when playing online games.
I live in Southern California with Verizon being my ISP and I have been affected by this slowdown as well. Yesterday night I noticed it greatly..

I was playing some counter strike source and the servers I always play on, my latency and ping is almost always below 100, but yesterday it was at a steady 180-200.. now this might not seem justifiable but this just doesn't happen to me ever. It seemed as if my Internet had a cap on the highest upload speed and download speed compared to my usual high rates. Not only in games was I affected but also when browsing the Internet. Personally I wouldn't doubt there being something sinister being the cause of nationwide slowdowns, if indeed this has been going on or was going on.

Its good that others have reported their slowdowns too, because it only shows that it is/was happening on a greater scale than just by local city or state.

PS. Ah, one more note, I've been a good vigilant observing conspiratorist for many years; something woke me long ago. A hint for the coming dark days.......watch your cellphones, watch your Internet. I have observed in, and around dates of major sheeeet going down that both will have HUGE interruption in service.
