It occurs to me Karl, that perhaps we should be (in our searching) also looking for a method by which these reported observations could be achieved.

To my knowledge, to date, the US does not have craft capable of hovering over a missile site, and de-activating nuclear missiles...

I'm going to do some research on possible methods for achieving the latter. I'll let you know if anything pops up...

Wow, I actually found something!
I really didn't think that I would, but there it was...

www.freepatentsonline.com...

"Additionally, the system is intended to affect the electrical functioning of a missile guidance system or warhead detonator by transmitting a precisely tuned frequency wave combination from a defensive missile borne frequency generator, or from a network of satellite or land based transmitters."

This particular patent was not filed until 2003, and the described mechanism does not directly fit with the observed evidence in many of these cases, however I thought it relevant that such technology (at least in patent form, which does not require a working prototype for publication/filing purposes...) exists at all...

I'll let you know if I find anything further...

WFA, mighty fine legwork and an excellent point.
There is an interesting conclusion made at the end of the Coyote canyon report which states that the radar maintennance specialists were left quite perplexed by the electromagnetic aspects of the incident.

SUMMARY OF INFORMATION

1. On 13 Aug 80, 1960 COMMSq Maintenance Officer reported Radar Approach Control equipment and scanner radar inoperative due to high frequency jamming from an unknown cause. Total blackout of entire radar approach system to include Albuquerque Airport was in effect between 1630-2215 hrs.
Radar Approach Control back up system also were inoperative.

2. On 13 Aug 80, Defense Nuclear Agency Radio Frequency Monitors
determined, by vector analysis, the interference was being sent from an
area (V-90 degrees or due East). On DAF map coordinates E-28.6. The area was located NW of Coyote Canyon Test area. It was first thought that Sandia Laboratory, which utilizes the test range was responsible.
However, after a careful check, it was later determined that no test were
being conducted in the canyon area. Department of Energy, Air Force
Weapons Laboratory and DNA were contacted but assured that their agencies were not responsible.

3. On 13 Aug 80, Base Security Police conducted a physical check of the
area but because of the mountainous terrain, a thorough check could not be completed at that time. A later foot search failed to disclose anything
that could have caused the interference.

4. On 13 Aug 80, at 2216 hrs., all radar equipment returned to normal
operation without further incident.

CONCLUSION: The presence of hostile intelligence jamming cannot be
ruled out. Although no evidence would suggest this, the method has been
used in the past.
Communication maintenance specialists cannot explain
how such interference could cause the radar equipment to become totally
inoperative. Neither could they suggest the type or range of the
interference signal. DNA frequency monitors reported the interference
beam was wide spread and a type unknown to their electronical equipment.
Further checks of the area was being conducted by Technical Services,
AFOSI.

WFA -this document makes some very interesting statements about UFOs and electromagnetic effects -see Program section two thirds down:

Through the diligent research efforts of York University researcher Nick Balaskas, a draft of the original "Project Magnet" Top Secret Memo has been recovered from the Archives at the University of Ottawa. It adds important information to the Wilbert Smith UFO research efforts for the Canadian government.

The "Project Magnet" Top Secret memo is the key document in the large Smith collection of UFO material, now stored in the archives at the University of Ottawa. In the memo, Smith outlined five key items about flying saucers that he had discovered while in discussions with top U.S. officials working on the flying saucer problem. These were:

1) The matter is the most highly classified subject in the United States Government, rating higher than even the H-bomb.

2) Flying saucers exist.

3) Their modus operandi is unknown but concentrated effort is being made by a small group headed by Vannevar Bush.

4) The entire matter is considered by the United States authorities to be of tremendous significance.

5) The United States authorities are investigating along quite a number of lines, which might possibly be related to the saucers such as mental phenomena

Purpose

This project is for the purpose of studying magnetic phenomena, particularly those phenomena resulting from unusual boundary conditions in the basic electromagnetic field. There is reason to believe their discovery will open up a new and useful technology.

Organization

The initial organization shall be as small as practical and composed of personnel who are used to working together, including so far as possible a variety of research abilities. Laboratory facilities are to be drawn from existing facilities so far as possible. Overall responsibility for the project shall rest with the engineer-in-charge, who shall delegate such responsibility to subordinates as maybe required to carry out the project.

Program

The initial program shall include the following avenues of investigations, to which others may be added from time top time as may appear expedient.

1. Theoretical study of electromagnetic radiation assuming boundary conditions different from those upon which the conventional theory was developed.

2. Laboratory study of mechanical forces associated with electron drift and electric currents in metallic masses.

3. Theoretical and laboratory study of magnetic domain resonance conditions in magnetic materials.

4. Investigation of the propagation of magnetic wave motion in magnetic materials.

5. Investigate the possibility of producing, an effect, a "sink" in a magnetic field.

6. Investigate the possibility of producing, in effect, single isolated magnetic poles.

7. Investigate the effects of a magnetic field on a rotating curviplaner metallic object.

Have those photos ever surfaced? I'd love to see them. Antarctic sightings always intrigue me. As you may know, Earth is situated within the galaxy so the South Pole is facing towards most of the star population and the Northern Hemisphere faces out towards the more open universe. Plus, it's a pretty safe assumption that nobody is testing advanced aircraft over Antarctica.

WFA, appreciate the reply -that FireFighters UFO Manual is a very relevant link and the sections about about Force Field Impact, Communications Disruption and Regional Power Blackouts are all very interesting.

I don't know much about this incident below but the Russian report describes a crashed UFO, EM effects and subsequent radiation sickness:

There is a claim by two Russians that a huge object crashed on August 28, 1991. The object was shaped like an airship and two migs were sent up to investigate and try to force it to land. When the pilots got within visual range that sent back a description that said it was shaped like a dirigible and was about 600 meters long and 110 meters wide. They said it had two port holes but no other discernable markings or devices were viable.
The migs had just pulled within 800 meters when their weapons shut down. When they got to within 600 meters they began to have engine problems. The object increased it's speed from 960 km per hour to 6800 km per hour and also began to move in a zig zag pattern. The jets had to back off.
A month went by and reports started to come in that a huge ufo had crashed into the Tien-Shan Mountains. In English the area where the crash took place was called "The grave of the devil". The Soviets tried to reach the crash site but it was winter and one of their heavily laden copters crashed killing all on board. They decided to wait until the spring. A second expedition found the object. It had hit the mountain and exploded into two equal halves. There were some very odd things about the wreckage.
Photography would not work because some sort of radiation would destroy the film. This radiation may have been effecting the party because they all stated that when they tried to approach the wreck and got closer than 800 meters they would feel extreme anxiety and exhaustion. Incidentally this was the same distance that the migs lost their weapons at. Compasses wouldn't work and neither would magnetometers. At 600 meters all watches and clocks malfunctioned. If a person got to within 500 meters he would get radiation burns.

A ufo is credited with arming a missile on a Soviet missile base and starting the launch sequence. After sending the launch crew into a panic and with only a few seconds remaining the ufo flew away and everything returned to normal. The equipment was disassembled but no malfunctions were found.

T+L -interesting reading.
There are also many unidentified submerged objects which have been reported to interfere with ship/submarine navigation and communication systems - don't know if you've seen this thread but it catalogues quite a lot of incidents.
Cheers.

Strange E.M. Interference case from Argentina

Large, Luminous UFO Stops Cars, Electronics In City

Date: July 15, 2002

Location: Campamento Vespucio, Argentina

An unidentified flying object (UFO) of large size and intense luminosity was seen on Monday between 20:50 and 21:30 hrs. in the town of Campamento Vespucio, seven kilometers west of General Mosconi and approximately 350 km to the north of the Saltan capital. The event caused a sensation in this community, which not long ago was the hydrocarbon-producing capital of the Argentinean northwest .

Residents of Vespucio took to the streets to look at the object, which remained motionless for 40 minutes before vanishing suddenly toward the west at "prodigious" speed, according to witnesses. A housewife who chose to remain anonymous said "it was oddly beautiful. The intensity of the light was enormous although it produced no fear whatsoever."
The same woman added that "we were all marvelled at first but got nervous when we realized that along with the phenomenon, the phones stopped working and the electrical systems of several cars were left for dead, making it impossible to start them or turn on their lights."

Residents of the Tablillas area, some 3 km inside the canyon where Campamento Vespucio is located and consequently closer to the UFO, were not surprised by the event, since they said "we are used to seeing this singular luminous events since 1999, and the fact remains that whenever they appear, they cause failures in motor and electrical systems."

Pilot Graham Bethune describes UFO encounter and resulting electromagnetic effects:

Pilot Graham Bethune recalls an incident while flying a transport aircraft from Iceland to Newfoundland. The aircraft carrier-sized object seem to fly up from the water to "inspect" them before disengaging. The entire crew witnessed it as did an on-board Navy medical doctor -EM effects reported.
