aren't pets just a burden in a SHTF situation?

Not at all.

Horses are transportation (worked for hundreds of years prior to cars).

Dogs are great alarms and protection, with keener senses than humans.

Rabbits and Chickens are a replenishable food supply (hey, they're pets until food).

Cats keep away rodents.

There's a reason we've coexisted with animals for eons....

I would take my Golden Retreiver, and terrier. Both are excellent hunters, and the Golden is trained to be more for flushing out game from high grass feilds and deep woods. Ive thought about this a lot, and I would really make my dogs look for there own food, all day before breaking down and feeding them, if they didnt catch anything. Never starve, only make them hunt for it first.
