Not only do you observe and collect a lot of data, but they were a failsafe in case any of the missile was going to come down on Japan. You keep the missile ships there so that if the missile doesn't work as advertised, you aren't relying on the other side to push the big red button. You do it yourself.

All words, and no actions. If no Intercept maneuvers were in fact taken against the Missile launch, which may in fact be nearly impossible to determine without at least a signature of Orbital failure, then President Obama's Administration has just been bested by a tyrant from a so called "Small, Insignificant" Country Half-a-World Away.

They've been saying almost all along that there weren't going to be any intercept actions taken against the missile unless it was going to crash onto Japan. It makes a lot more sense to NOT intercept it. If you intercept it then you lose the chance to learn about the flight characteristics and get information from the launch.

The test was a success. Alaska took a hit as planned.

But you have to weigh the MASINT against the Political fall out, as well as the Proliferation aspect which is inevitably a characteristic of this launch. The U.S. President, the U.N., the E.U. and so forth talk about "Sanctions", and "Warnings", yet they already fail to enforce and take actions against violations of previously enacted Resolutions. The entire aspect of verbal warnings are useless unless they are backed-up by forced compliance, even if such measures are carried out in a deniable fashion.

Some times I think our world events are just really childish. NK is treated as the little runt on the block. They get a new bike and the rest of us don't want them to ride it.

If we are to promote free enterprise, let them try to advance themselves instead of threatening to beat them up. What's on the payload? They said it's a communication satelite. Fine. We, the U.S., say that also and we all know that we shoot up alot more than teloscopes and communication satelites.

Why doesn't the rest of the world get their panties in a knot everytime we shoot up something. Are we that 'Holier than Tho'? Look at some of our military experiments and arsenal. They make me cringe and you don't hear everybody else shouting at us. I'm a true red white and blue american but man do we have an ego or what!

If we're afraid of the NK starting a fire, just keep an eye on them, don't threaten to kick their a--. Now kids, let's play nice.

U.S.: North Korean 'satellite' did not make orbit

"Officials acknowledged today that North Korea launched a Taepo Dong 2 missile at 10:30 p.m. EDT Saturday, which passed over the Sea of Japan and the nation of Japan," the statement said. "Stage one of the missile fell into the Sea of Japan. The remaining stages along with the payload itself landed in the Pacific Ocean. No object entered orbit and no debris fell on Japan."

No really, another piece of North Korean hardware failed.
Who woulda thought that could happen.
