Dalai Lama Says Tibet Now Is 'Hell on Earth'

online.wsj.com

SHANGHAI -- Fifty years after the Dalai Lama fled Tibet, the spiritual leader said his people's culture, religion and identity were "nearing extinction" under Chinese rule, as security forces blanketed ethnic Tibetan areas to prevent unrest linked to Tuesday's anniversary of a failed uprising against Beijing.

The tough remarks, in a speech delivered in Dharmsala, India, seat of Tibet's self-proclaimed government in exile, underscore the strained relations with Beijing after talks last year made no apparent progress. The Dalai Lama said China's Communist government had subjected Tibet and its people to "untold suffering and destruction" over the past five decades, turning the Himalayan region into "hell on earth." He also called for "meaningful autonomy" for Tibetans.

On Monday, President Hu Jintao said China "must reinforce the solid Great Wall for combating separatism and safeguarding national unity" to insure stability in Tibet. He called for the building of a "unified, democratic, prosperous and harmonious socialistic new Tibet."

....

Tibet remains poorer than China's prosperous eastern provinces. "What we have lost under Chinese Communist rule far outweighs what we have gained," the Dalai Lama said Tuesday.

To tell you the truth, I'm completely oblivious to exactly what is happening in Tibet. Mostly because there are no sources other than the Dalai Lama whom, I would say, has a personal agenda backed by the CIA and Western media.

From the evidences given by the Yellow Press, it seems that Tibet is hell for Tibetans.

"We are still scared," said one ethnic Han Chinese shop owner in Lhasa. "These days, we're afraid to go out, so we mostly stay at home, especially at night."

But what is that about? Tibetans terrorizing Han Chinese while Chinese soldiers put the province under martial law?

The Dali lama is no different than the PRC. He wants to free Tibet and "RETURN TO POWER" yeah lets look at some of the things the Dali did when he was in power. you had a privileged priest class while the rest where serfs living in poverty. he lived in a palace they lived in shacks. he enjoys lush variety's of food, they enjoy bowls of rice.
While out of power He took 180,000 a year from the CIA for his "living expenses". and 1 in a half million a year to finance Tibetan guerrillas against the Chinese that where trained in Colorado (hahahahah peaceful Guerrillas??). After people found out he stopped accepting the money, real bad Personal relations i would imagine....

No the Dali is a cultural icon dictator and no different than the PRC, he just wants "HIS" Slaves back. the lesser of to evils is still evil.

Praise White Jesus!!!

i have done my research I'm sorry the truth hurts and that you are biased. (Enjoy your Trek this June) yeah it's sad that china has squelched free speech in Tibet and that Tibet is being ruled by communism dictators that care nothing for them. However it wont be much different with the Big D that wants his slaves back. do you understand this?

my Praise white Jesus is Sarcasm. i know it's terrible people really act like that in the real world and i can't blame you for thinking that I'm a religious zealot. its more to provide that noone is holier than thou we are all the same.

I would like to hear more of these allegations, especially their sources.

You sound just like the pro-Zionist's who claim every Israeli who dies is just reason to kill ten thousand Palestinians (you didn't say that, I know). Except, I am willing to believe that it is possible the CIA contrived a way to exploit the situation towards their own ends. They've done it in so many other places, I would be surprised if they hadn't.

All of which is external to the brutality and torture used to create and maintain a continuous state of distress in the region. Which can't rightly be justified - why would the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan Monks behave in such an inconsistent manner?

With all due respect, I must say that I am confounded as to what compels you to make allegations that presume to hold the Dalai Lama on the same level as the brutal PRC.

I would most assuredly be interested in your ability to provide some credible evidence that could corroborate your statements equating this extraordinary man who has been a recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize with a cutthroat communist regime.

I think the Nobel prize is bs lol, it's given as a way to make the world look up to someone with ideas supported by the rulers of this world.

And personally, there really isn't any tangible evidence to justify the exact degree of brutality the Chinese government is using against the Tibetans.

If you can provide me with evidence not cropped from some movie or taken from some other revolt, please do so.
