Come on people you are getting rusty. The closest asteroid to come to the earth in a long time has come and gone and I see not much talk about it here or anywhere.

I'm disappointed to say the least…..

was a little less than 45,000 miles.

One is coming closer, however it is in 2029.

they didnt even find this thing til 3 days before it passed. im sure if one of these nasties were to hit us, we would not know until afterwards.

.010 AU, but with the gravity effect of the earth it could easily be much closer.

They were probably tracking it for a while but never bothered to let us know.
If I was in there shoes i would of kept quiet too, until the danger passed of course.

Actually I was following it a few years back, and there is nothing closer for the next 50 plus years.

Isn't the asteroid that's expected to arrive, I believe April 13th 2029, supposed to be closer?

(That's Friday the 13th, too).

EDIT here:

Yep, April 13th 2029...

science.nasa.gov...

A LOT sooner than 50 years plus, and a bit closer to earth, too...

2009DD45 was a little 40m rock. Could take out a city if it landed perfectly on top, but otherwise, mostly harmless. Most of earth is ocean anyway, and its not big enough to start a mega-tsunami or anything.

Interesting how close it came to earth, but it's not like it was ever a threat to the survival of life or mankind.

Very interesting ..thanks for the info. does make you wonder how informed we will be if there is something closer or that will hit us.

Judging by your post count and the fact that you hadn't made a thread about it either, you might as well be disappointed in yourself. Or did you miss the news like the rest of us?

That video sure places it into prospective on how close we came to a bad day!!

And no one said anything ...... there was no doubt in my mind that we would be informed of these near misses and this proves it.

That and the one in 2029 are to close for comfort!!!

I bet thats actually quite interesting. I would expect you would need to be educated to degree standard mathematically I imagine the calculations are very complex.

Do you track these for a living, or just for fun?
