Lulin's green color comes from the gases that make up its Jupiter-sized atmosphere. Jets spewing from the comet's nucleus contain cyanogen (CN: a poisonous gas found in many comets) and diatomic carbon (C2). Both substances glow green when illuminated by sunlight in the near-vacuum of space.

Copper doesn't burn green. Copper oxide does however.

It could be very possible that there are other metal/oxides that burn green...

The comet itself is not a green color, it's the 'coma' which is the cloud of gas/dust that surrounds the comet that is green.

The green color is actually due to mostly to oxgen molecules fluorescing when they are hit by sunlight.

Edit to add: Cyanide too

Nothing is burning on the comet. The color comes from excitation of gas molecules in the coma of the comet, like Oxygen and cyanide.

If it were to suddenly brighten (not unknown), I'm sure it would spawn a whole bunch of conspiracy threads.

As it is, it's probably good that people can only see the full beauty of Lulin via long-exposure photographs, or we'd be inundated here I reckon
