World of Warcraft no longer legally for sale in Australia

www.overclock.net

One of the major stories that is breaking today around the internet is the fact that in Australia a number of MMOs are no longer legally able to be sold. This is due to their lack of classification, things like M for Mature, PG, 18+, etc...

Our sister site Massively covered this extensively last week, and Tateru Nino's article on it has been picked up by the editors over at Slashdot. This is in particular interest to World of Warcraft folks in that WoW doesn't have a classification, and thus cannot be legally sold in Australia.

Wow, Australia has been really screw up lately.

First they can't download torrents.

Then their bandwidth gets cut.

Then they block all porn.

Now they're taking the gaming industry down.

That's what I call a dictatorship. They're not prioritizing their policies correctly and are making unnecessary and absurd laws.

Poor Australians... come to the U.S. =D.

Well, since they took your guns first, what did you really expect? Soon, you'll be limited to downloading recipes and playing Monopoly.

Probably because they live next door to the world's largest Muslim population? They may need to defend their island colony, but hopefully they'll keep their region from a nuke race? Which is preferable; Cultral truce with the locals or death by nuclear fire?

But if they use Predator drones and the like, then this is a bad move stretegically because now that I think about it, Ender_Wiggin does sound like an Australian name. ...Hmm but then its hard to imagine what the WoW interface would control in real life.. Maybe 12 foot tall bipedal mecha? Truce with Japan and govt-sponsored WoW, might be better for them, in such a scenario.

Because if they had guns they could shoot copies of WoW out of the sky as they float by on Freedom to Game balloons? Sorry, but I don't see the correlation.

If the Australian people as a collective really care, I'm sure they'll find a way of dealing with an intrusive government.

Australia is the next world power, they are becoming more and more independant from America and Britain. It's good they are making their own laws not based on the world powers but based on experts. That's the road to becoming a world power.

They are becoming a world power by stopping a video game? I didnt think it was that easy.

Essentially what you are saying is that by taking away the freedom and the ability to access all of the information on earth, its making them a stronger country? Doesnt China do something similar to that? We know how happy the average chinesse citizen is.

ok, first off, something doesn't quite make sense with this, WoW has at least one dedicated server for Aussies, which is Aman'Thul (Oceanic); shoot...i have a toon on there!

It sounds like, the gov JUST realized the game has no rating, but, here in the US, I believe it's T for Teen? (like that has ever stopped parents to let their pre-teens play).

My question is: why the hell would BLIZZARD NOT inquire as to what the rating should be in the first place to the Aussies...BEFORE they shipped them?

Somethings REALLY not adding up here!

Ohhh, no they didn't.

I sense some serious nerd rage induced rioting in the next few days.

If they banned WoW in the US, I know at least half of my friends would go on an absolute "OH THE INJUSTICE" spree.

Actually everything you stated is incorrect, Our bandwidth has not been cut, we can download torrents, And with WOW the Americans sell it to us yet cannot even make one server in Australia, talk about cheap, blizzard.

And I would much rather stay in a country equally as developed as America, but with only 20 million people

That's my prediction(opinion). Once again the idea of freedom comes in to play yet you can't draw a line between freedom and complete freedom where human being are free to kill each other.

Laws are laws, if a nation sets up laws based on experts and not based on other nations, it will succeed in becoming a world super power, having major influence (my opinion). Australia is already seeking a seat in the security council.

Give my prediction couple of years and you will see

This is just one more step of the Austrialian government taking the freedoms away from people. They a lot of weird restrictions and rules that are backwards towards progress. They need to open up and fight for the freedoms back. No guns, No porn, now no WOW, soon it will be no internet. Who runs that country, the people or the government. You guys need to take back your freedoms.

Australia is to be the Center, Captial of New World Order, I'm pretty sure the Building is already built, I believe Kissinger was behind design.
Please feel free to correct me if incorrect.

I can't correct you on an issue I lack knowledge of. All I know about the NWO is that they want one world government I think. It could be possible, maybe that is why Australia is pulling away from the influence of America and Britain. Maybe Australia feels that it doesn't need to be influenced since it will be the Capital of NWO.

I can't prove any of it though, but I can prove my original point based on historical evidence. It has happened many times before.

Requiring a video game to post a rating is hardly an earth shattering event. The Aussie law will be respected if the WoW people wish to market their game. If WoW disappears, all those kids who think they are such hard cases will have the shock of facing reality or finding another fantasy to live in. Most of them are so submerged in an alternate reality, they probably will make the shift without a blink. WoW is probably fairly well along the path to replacement, anyway.

now i share the same view as many other australians.

we are happy with the gun control laws we have in place. hence why our deaths by firearms has gone down.

whats the point of all these weapons?

look at america and the deaths they cause in your country.

Those were proposed legislation that I have heard from multiple sources.
If you have not heard of those legislation perhaps you should visit some technology sites such as Overclock.net.
