A benevolent one-world government would be as likely to succeed in the real world as communism did. It is a utopianistic ideal, which cannot exist other than on paper.
The danger of a global government, lies in the undeniable fact that humans are greedy. That is the reason power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. If people were benevolent by nature then communism would not be just idealistic, it would be the norm. Communism, in it's purest form, relies on the premise that people are more concerned about the good of the whole, than their own personal gain. If that were the case, we would not need to form a "world government" because we would already be working together for the common good.

People are instinctively greedy and manipulative, especially when they are placed in a position of power over other people. Who in their right mind would not fight to stay on top, once they made it up there? Would you want to be one of the "governed", knowing that you could be the one "governing"? History has demonstrated man's inability to avoid corruption. If people cannot prevent power from going to their heads in a single state or country, why would we think it possible that they could do it, once in control of the entire world? We have got to work out the problems in each of our own countries before we should even think about uniting them all under one power!

Another issue is the amount of diversity that exists in the world. I would not want the Queen of England telling me what to do, because she is not familiar with my way a life. France would not want Japan telling them how they should do things, for the same reason. The further away from the working class the governing class is, the more out of touch and unconcerned they become with the issues facing those in the real world.

That was the whole reason why the US was set up as a representative republic. The idea was that the states had the most power over domestic affairs, since they were closer to the people and were more familiar with their needs. They new the danger of a central, omnipotent government and warned us over and over to not let those in the federal government usurp the powers given to the states. It was a great idea, partly because it gave people living in one state the ability to move to another, if it's policies were more in line with their principles. It made it possible for us to live as we felt was best for us, rather than just assimilating everyone so that they reflect everyone else. What do you think would happen if someone tried to make the whole world politically correct? Do you think it would benefit mankind or turn the world into a bunch of mindless drones? My money is on mindless drones, personally. Where would you go if you wanted to live in a under a different form of government?

In a one world government, there can be no alternate perspectives to inspire debate and discussion. It literally, would become "either you're with us or with the enemy", since any opposition to the powers-that-be, would be considered defiance of their absolute authority.

While it would be great if the world could become all gummy bears and rainbows simply by uniting all of our countries under a single benevolent government; the fact is, people are selfish and power-hungry. Until we, as an entire species become enlightened/evolved enough to realize that happiness and peace will only come as a result of our selfless, concern for others, no form of centralized global rule stands a chance of ever being anything more than a corrupt dictatorship.
