Maybe none of this is actually real, maybe none of us exist, maybe all of this is just a program running on a super computer ran by post-humans or an advanced alien civilization. I mean think about it, just think about how Earth is SO "coincidentally" well-fit for life, and how we got here which was completely luck. Scientists agree that there is a 20% chance of us living in a simulated reality.

I'm a World of Warcraft fan, one of the quotes from a female human emote makes me ponder. "Do you ever feel like you're not in charge of your own destiny, like...you're being controlled by an invisible hand?"

That makes me think... How do I know I'm not being controlled, and that all of this isn't some insane MMO played by advanced aliens who get entertainment out of all this, much like we get entertainment out of controlling a character in a game?

And no, it's probably not the Matrix mythos of us being used as batteries, that's stupid and was just a plot-device. Chances are, they just run this simulation to see how we interacted with each other, thousands or millions of years before them. They are literally looking at their ancestors. I'm sure someone somewhere, far above in the physical world is looking at this conversation and laughing at us mindless peons, pondering if we're really in a simulated reality or not.

BUT, what's interesting about the theory of living in a simulated reality, is that there's a 50% chance there's an afterlife, that the creators took mercy on us and made some other program once we die, where we all go. OR, they were bastards and just made it happen like when you delete a file from your recycle bin, gone forever, non-existent. Or perhaps, it may be nearly 100% chance that they did not bother to make an afterlife for us. Did we ever make a afterlife for all the enemies you kill in World of Warcraft? No. Too much effort and they're so intellectually inferior to us that we don't care. Would they think the same? I personally hope not.

There could be a chance also that this is all one massive MMO, sure, it's far-fetched and sounds stupid, but I like thinking about it. I mean how does my character in World of Warcraft know he's controlled? What if he thinks everything he does is on his free will, everything he says he just randomly thinks up, and when I log him off he's asleep or in a state of limbo? I mean someone could be making me type this, but the program is making me believe I'm actually typing this on my free will.

Another fun question is that if our creators in the "physical world", are they REALLY in the real world? Or yet another simulated reality? Will we get to the point of running a simulated reality, a universe such as the Sims series, but much more evolved? Yes, actually, we will, very soon we will have computers fast enough to run such a program, and we will be able to see our own little worlds, evolving, growing, and perhaps living long enough to make their own simulated reality. And then the process repeats.

Maybe our creators were nice enough to give us an afterlife. Free of pain, free of confusion, of course until we're taking up too much memory and they have to delete. There's no way to actually find out. For all we know, everything around us could be a projection our brain has created for us to cope with whatever reality we are really in.

They say "The conditions for life ARE JUST PERFECT on our planet and if off by a fraction of a percent we would be dead, therefore there IS A CREATOR", I have to agree, but not in the sense of one single creator, but several of the post-humans or advanced aliens that created our reality. . You see, therefore, they may be declared as "gods", but I highly doubt it. That is my only explanation to why this planet is so "fit" for life, and we got so "lucky" with evolving into "intelligent" beings.

Okay, believe it or not but listen ,one day we will be able to create completely simulated realities. Does it have to be that day when we stop and ask ourselves "Hmm... this is oddly familiar, feels like I've been here before!" Personally no, I don't think it should be like that, we're on the verge on a technological age beyond any other and very soon we will be able to create completely intelligent universes. Look at the GAMES we already have: Sims, Spore, Little Big Planet, and those are just games. Can you imagine when we can actually create entire digital planets and even universes, not for entertainment but for observation and what-if scenarios? Will it really be then until someone asks 'Oh, are we actually living in a simulated reality, much like the one we've just made?'

Will we ever know the answer to this question? If it happens to be true, do the beings in the "real" world wonder the same?

Watch the movie the 13th Floor. A very good movie that has that exact same concept. One of my favorite movies.

Hey there ! Nice thread

Life is self Replicating, But I think what you are asking is do we live in some simulation, and thats a no!

Why? well a simulation is a creation of our understading of life, yes the simulations we run are just that "similor" not a carbon copy of life itself so we cant be in one if we dont understand what is we are in..

Myself personaly I think we live in a giant cell "feel free to find my thread".. Maybe I am totaly wrong and what you are saying is right in this respect..

If what gave rise to use ie the cell theory, then by its "nature" we will give birth to the same thing in time.. A universe with laws that we can view and be god with "maybe only in computers" but thats not bad heh ; )

And to make your head spin abit more, our prefection of understanding the universe will enable us to make a VERY real universe..one we are in!! not a model!

Table of elements is our dna and mapping it will take a very long time then we need to understand it then splice / munipulate it..

See DNA vs Maths ^^)

good thread neway

I've had this thought many time and no matter how i look at it i always endup at the "cell" theory that theresult mentioned.

Myself personaly I think we live in a giant cell

are we a giant cell or a tinny microscopic cell?

the thing is though that with both of these theories there's no start and no end are we a cell in a cell in a cell.... or a simulated world in a simulated world... ?

I used to play The Sims 2 quite a lot. If there's any game to make a person think along the same lines as you, that's it.

They had an afterlife of sorts after they 'died'. They could come back as ghosts and haunt their families.

It's surprising how these games can send you into deep modes of thought and suggest new ways of looking at 'reality'.

I would suspect that life would evolve here that fits the environment so life here would fit rather well. In some other 'harsh' environment there would be life that fits well there also but different from and not fitting ours.

But you don't know it for sure, we will never know and it's all speculation, you can't honestly sit there and say "Yeah it would be interesting, but nope, no way" I mean how can you even say that? Just because everything seems so advanced and blah blah? What if the civilization who created our simulation is advanced beyond anything we can ever imagine?

ah...but in world of warcraft every npc you kill respawns again. so with that theory, perhaps we just relive everything over and over and over and over...

interesting thread.

Yeah, but I kind of combined 2 different speculations into one, if we're in a simulated reality then it's probably not a game, and if we're in a game then it's probably not to meant to be a simulated reality.

In this is all a simulation, then we are being observed and watched for some reason, and if this is all a game then we're just player controlled characters going about our every-day lives.

Will Wright, the creator of the most popular video game franchise in history agrees with the simulation argument, mainly because he has such a history with creating games that revolve around the very concept.

Hey Religion, do you think your trip to space was part of a game as well? Maybe that's why they brought you back...because your character wasn't exciting enough.

We miss you in your space travel thread btw

You're a troll and nothing more, you didn't win so don't think you did, I have nothing to prove because I know I was telling the truth.

So how about you go stalk me a bit more.

I'm not trying to win or lose at anything. All I did was point out how your post about travelling in space for 3 months was a blatant lie, which is against the ATS Terms and Conditions.

Im sure this life on this planet is not real. Purpose is to realize it and break out of the illusion.

I dont have theories or proof, this is my gut feeling talking.

Well is that not what I'm trying to do? Speculation is the first step of believing something.

Makes some very interesting points and observations if this is indeed all just an MMO.

If this is all a simulation, a program being run on some super mega computer, would someone please reach for the "quit" button and then reboot that malfunctioning computer?

Cheers!!!!
