RAF Tornados were scrambled to intercept two Russian bombers as they threatened to enter UK airspace, it has emerged.

Still playing these games I see. Just thought it should be noted...

In fact if this thread gets any attention this evening I will edit the title and maybe we could use it to compile all of Russia's airspace raiding shenanigans in one place.

Anyone who thought the cold war ended with the breakup of the Soviet Union needs to have a re-think. Russia is still operated by the same group of people as before.
Nice to know that the military hasn't caved in to thinking things are peachy-keen and still maintains a force capable of response.

"UN fighter jets"???
The UN doesn't HAVE any fighter jets. They were either US or Canadian if they were near US airspace.

I say go for it.

I'm afraid all I've heard about was a single Russian aircraft getting within about 20 miles of Hull several weeks ago.

It sounds like they're observing how the RAF responds. If you're feeling optimistic - they're just updating their defunct Cold War manuals. If you're on the look-out for some sensational news - Ivan's mulling over whether to kick a man while he's down.

Personally I'm inclined to react more like:

"What difference does it make why they're doing this? Are you trying to tell me NATO has no effective early warning system & capability to buzz these planes back to where they came from within a few short minutes of them crossing the border?"

Could it perhaps be that NATO's defences are nowadays so missile-based that it's an all-or-nothing response? (Just guessing.)

Right then.

Bring back the English Electric Lightning!

Come on Blighty! Look lively, now!

Actually, Russian bombers(bear) enter Canadian air space frequently, this generally happens in the Arctic, they are intercepted and asked to leave and they oblige, looks like they have a lot of interest in the new Arctic.

Indeed.

Ivan claims the Arctic in no uncertain terms

How about we drop one of these into the depths of Lake Baikal? -

I hear there are some useful mineral deposits in that region...

What exactly are UN Fighters?

And where do these supposed UN Fighters come from?

Russia is tired of being the underdog it seems, and feels the need to flex its muscles, or at least pretend it still has some.

I hope they know what they are doing. It is childish, really. And when it gets to this scale, being childish can get people killed.
