I don't really like lists of the kind, because I don't think you can pinpoint just one or two works of the kind - not to mention that many good cinema works can't be categorised as belonging to just one genre.

However, in the film noir genre, I have two definite favourites:

Double indemnity (944) and Body heat (1981), which is actually a remake of sorts of the first one, but is a terrific movie in its own right.

P.S. How would you categorise films like Midnight Cowboy, for example?
(Which I like very much, BTW.)

Star & Flag for a good topic. So many to choose from but the ones I picked are my favorites. I loved Shawshank Redemption but wasn't sure where to put it in the list so I went with the others.

DRAMA – Little Big Man

ACTION/ADVENTURE – The Dark Knight (on the bandwagon)

MILITARY – Saving Private Ryan

COMEDY – Office Space

ROMANTIC – The Notebook

HORROR – In the Mouth of Madness

SCIENCE FICTION – The Matrix

FANTASY – (I’ll admit it) Harry Potter series

In order:

Little Big Man was one of those movies that captured my attention and heart when I was a kid. It has stayed there as one of my all time favorite movies regardless of genre. Great acting, great story, what else could one want?

The Dark Knight quickly removed most competition from this category with the non-stop action and great acting. I don’t care what anyone says, Ledger was the perfect Joker and will replace Jack Nicholson for all time as the best big screen Joker.

Saving Private Ryan brought the brutality and reality of what many brave souls faced during that brutal war and brutal operation to the home. Although the gore factor is in line with the Bravehearts of the movie world, it was well done.

Office Space. What can I say? Yes, there are a lot of other good comedies out there like Liar Liar or Nothing to Lose, but this one is an all time classic.

Showing my softer side, I must admit that this move, The Notebook, was a great love story. Plain and simple. It kept me in it the whole time and displayed the courage and love that a human being can give.

Yes, there are many decent and even great horror flicks out there. However, In the Mouth of Madness was one that truly messed with my mind. It literally tripped me out and I wasn’t on ANYTHING!! I promise! Honorable mentions: IT and The Stand (wish they would give them both a big screen shot. Two movies for each would be about right. Maybe 3 for the Stand.)

The Matrix. What can I say? Especially for the types of minds that we find on this site. The concept was great. Sure, they kind of went down hill a little in 2 and 3 but the overall concept was great. I just wish they would have stuck with the original plot and ending.

Yes, I had to add another category because this is my favorite one to read. Right now there is a new king of fantasy (although he passed away late last year) and that is Robert Jordan. If they ever bring the Wheel of Time to the big screen I believe that it will be as big if not bigger than the LOTR series and even the series that is currently my favorite, Harry Potter.

Great topic Dave! Thanks. Gives everyone a chance to change gears.

That one just wigged me out. It was a very interesting way to show how a child would deal with such a terrible experience as she went through. But I'm telling you, it was STRANGE!

Great Post. Although, it's incredibly hard to choose a "favorite" as there's a few from each genre, so I'm gonna throw out 2 from each genre with my "favorite" being listed first. Here goes:

DRAMA – A Clockwork Orange (or) The Godfather

ACTION/ADVENTURE – Indiana Jones & The Temple of Doom (or) Braveheart

MILITARY – Full Metal Jacket (or) Jarhead

COMEDY – 40 Year Old Virgin (or) Super Troopers (or) Animal House

ROMANTIC – American Beauty (or) Forrest Gump

HORROR – The Exorcist (or) The Shining

SCIENCE FICTION – Close Encounters of the Third Kind (or) Star Wars

And there it was.
