Oh, I suppose Russia were never seeking to build a base in Abkhazia, and place S-300 missiles, tanks and planes at a Russian base there.

So is Russia allowed to arm these separist states, and not expect Georgia to arm themselves?

It's ironic coming from the Russian's criticising Georgia, when Russia stole land by force. We don't know exact details over S.Ossetia and whether Russia sent tanks in first, or Georgia fired first, and neither does anyone on here. But Abhazia was invaded and annexed for sure without any Georgian provocation.

There was a lot of BS in your post...but eh.

It's ironic coming from the Russian's criticising Georgia, when Russia stole land by force.

Stole land by force? Is this a joke? Georgia tried to do a genocide like they did in 92-93 in Abkhazia. Saakasvilli is a freaking nutjob. It would be like if all texans wanted to seceed and Obama sent the army to kill thousands of people in Austin just for fun and to teach them a lesson. Russia ``taking over`` is to give protection to those people, not a land grab.

We don't know exact details over S.Ossetia and whether Russia sent tanks in first, or Georgia fired first, and neither does anyone on here. But Abhazia was invaded and annexed for sure without any Georgian provocation.

Utter BS. We know FOR A FACT that Georgia started it, all europeans countries declared it, even the US admitted it. So you're not informed or you're making stuff up. You're probably think it's 1980s again and the USSR will take over the world, it's not the case. The biggest ennemies of humanity right now are the G20 leaders and the bankers, not Russia.

Anyway. More news. This could be it real soon, we'll see who backs down first.

Russian patrol boat starts mission off Abkhazia coast - TV

The first Russian patrol boat has arrived in Abkhazia to protect the maritime borders of the former Georgian republic which has been recognized by Russia as an independent state, the Vesti television reported.

The Novorossiysk vessel is part of a Russian coastal guard division which will be based at the Abkhazian port of Ochamchira. The division is expected to have up to 10 Sobol class and Mangust class patrol boats.

So if Georgia tries their BS again, they will be sunk.

Can someone please take out this tie eating loonatik Sackof#villi out. Russia should send spetznaz to tbelisi put him on a plane back to united states and be done with it. We could go back to being friends with the georgians they are very much part of russian culture. There are more then 1 million georgians living in russia right now.

There are also many reports of Georgians being mistreated in Russia before the Russians moved into Abkhazia.

“The Russian authorities claim that the expulsions weren’t targeting Georgians, but were part of the renewed fight against illegal migration,” said Holly Cartner, Europe and Central Asia director at Human Rights Watch. “But in reality, this was a coordinated campaign orchestrated at senior levels of government that singled out Georgians for a specific period.”

Following months of growing political tensions between Russia and Georgia, Georgian officials detained four Russian military officers on September 27, 2006 on charges of espionage. On October 2, Georgia handed the officers over to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), and in the days and weeks that followed Russian authorities began a widespread crackdown on ethnic Georgians, Georgian nationals, and Georgian-owned or Georgian-themed businesses and organizations.

Russian government agencies issued written orders instructing police, the Federal Migration Service, courts and other agencies to take the necessary actions to identify and expel Georgians living irregularly in Russia. Senior government officials disparaged Georgians openly on government-owned TV, and much of Russia’s government-friendly TV and other media followed suit.

Police and other authorities denied basic rights to many of the detained. Most were denied lawyers or access to Georgian embassy officials, and were given hearings lasting only a few minutes. Many were held in severely overcrowded cells and in sometimes appalling conditions during detention. Two Georgians died in custody awaiting expulsion.

Why did Russia invade Abkhazia? It was S.Ossetia that you are saying georgia attacked first. We can agree to disagree about S.Ossetia, but why the hell did the Russians need to invade Abkhazia and build a base there?

Anyway cheers for the news update.

You are of course aware that Russia never invaded Abkhazia. In fact there was no fighting between Russians and Georgians in Abkhazia during the August War. The only event resembling military action there was when the Abkhaz militia pushed a small amount of Georgian troops out of Kodori Gorge, and that was a very minor clash.

Russian troops did land near Sukhumi as a precaution - and a valid one given the Georgian surprise attack on South Ossetia and massing of Georgian troops near the separatist regions' borders. When the Russian convoy advanced to Senaki and Poti later on, they did not encounter any resistance. Those actions cannot be called an invasion anyway, because the Russians did what they said they were going to do - assure that Georgian offensive capabilities are neutralized - and then left.

As for the base, that too is a precaution. Knowing the maniac that is Saakashvili, there is no predicting what step he will take next. When the Russian peacekeepers were attacked in their small and undefended headquarters last August, there were numerous casualties. Russia has every right to assure that its peacekeepers are safe this time around - and if it takes a full military base to assure that - then so be it.

Georgia must face reality - thanks to its idiot leader it has relinquished its claims for the separatist territories. There is no undoing what Saakashvili had done last August, and there is no undoing what the aftermath was. Georgia and its ally - only one, the US - can argue otherwise until they are blue in the face. That will get it nowhere. If the Georgian people have an issue with what happened, then they should take it up with Saakashvili.

Russia begins patrolling Abkhazian waters

The first Russian patrol boat has arrived in the Republic of Abkhazia to protect the sea borders of the young state which declared independence from Georgia last summer following Tbilisi's attack on South Ossetia.

It was recognized by Moscow in 2008.

The Novorossiysk is the first of a flotilla of ten vessels to be based at the Black Sea port of Ochamchira.

Russia’s Federal Security Service also announced that a base for Black Sea Fleet ships is to be established in Abkhazia, while illegal trespassers from neighbouring Georgia would be detained by Russian border guards.

“Our task is to safeguard the territorial waters of Abkhazia according to the treaty between Sukhum and Moscow. If we find that the republic is under threat, we'll act under international maritime law and UN conventions. We are not here to scare or fight anybody but to ensure law and order along Abkhazian borders,” said Novorossiysk ship captain Faik Mamedov.

Vyacheslav Chirikba, a foreign policy adviser to the Abkhazian President, says the decision to send patrol boats to the republic is a lawful response to Georgian actions.

“Following Georgia’s capturing of peaceful cargo ships en route to Abkhazia in international waters, Russia felt compelled to protect Abkhazia from aggressive Georgian action,” Chirikba explained.

More news. The US continuing supporting that crazy nut...change indeed.

U.S. pledges further support for Georgia's territorial integrity

The U.S. will continue its efforts to prevent international recognition of former Georgian republics, Assistant Secretary of State for European Affairs Philip Gordon said on Tuesday.

"The Secretary made clear that the United States does not and will not recognize South Ossetia and Abkhazia, and made clear to the Georgians that we would continue to work with other members of the international community so that other countries wouldn't recognize as well," Gordon said, speaking about the recent meeting between U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili.

You can only poke the bear with a stick so many times before he attacks you. United States installed the puppet Saakoshvilli in the so called "revolution" pick a color i forget how many united states used, all the colors of rainbow i suppose. Now put yourself in Russia's place lets say Russia installs a government in Mexico gives them weapons, training, Mexico becomes very hostile to us even though there are a lot of Mexicans living in us and working and owning businesses but then Mexico goes into Huston and starts shelling apartment building there killing civilians women, children sort of a sneak attack at night. The night before they do it they get all the Mexicans out of Huston. What would united states response to that be? The neocon agenda has been to encircle Russia and with Vlad that wont be possible sorry, you should have done that with the drunk Yeltsin now its too late

With that I do not disagree. The US buddied up with Georgia for an airbase and a possible pipeline. Russia probably wants to buddy up with Abkhazia and Ossetia for a possible pipeline. It's all about money and energy.

My post was more about Georgians being mistreated in Russia (specifically, Moscow). I've heard and read this to be true for a while.

Georgia says Russia stoking tensions in Black Sea

Georgia on Tuesday accused Moscow of raising tensions and threatening security in the Black Sea region by deploying Russian patrol ships off the coast of its rebel Abkhazia enclave.

The deployment "will inevitably escalate tensions and pose a threat to the security of the countries of the region," Georgia's foreign ministry said in a statement.

Maybe you should have thought of that BEFORE killing russian peacekeepers?

It's being shown throughout history that bigger country's can always find excuses to attack & invade smaller countries. This is no different - Russia building an airbase in Abkhazia, placing S-300 missiles there. It seems that people should realise that regardless of who started last year's war, that Russia has no right to arm Abkhazia as a proxy state with ships, weapons etc.

Russia arming rebels in S.Ossetia and Abkhazia to fight Georgia last year and probably this year is just a much a cause of these wars, as Georiga's offensive on S.Ossetia, and Georgia's recent blockade of Abkhazia. Don't you see! Russia (i.e. the bigger country) is just provoking the smaller nation (Georgia). The Nazi's used a false pretext to invade Poland in much the same way.

If Russia really doesn't want a war, then it should act more responsibly and cease reckless activities. Georgia does not have the capability to take back these separatist areas. So if Russia doesn't want a war (and does not want to lose peacekeepers), then maybe they should have considered the consequences of arming rebels in these separatist area to begin with, but I don't think Russia ever had any intentions of completely avoiding war, otherwise they would not have armed these separatists in the first place.

There's no doubt that Russia planned this from the beginning, and Georgia are falling into the same trap again (soon twice). Georgia should just accept that they'll never regain control of these regions, otherwise their next loss may be Tblisi. Russia are just playing Saakashvili for a fool, and so far he's playing along. Whatever anyone's opinions on Saakashvili, firstly he is western educated, and secondly - Russia are lying when they claim they don't want a war. Russia won't openly attack Georgia, but they want Saakashvili to fall into their traps, so the Kremlin can control the pipelines for a start, along with whatever other parts of Georgia they can make independent with a Russian-proxy leader who wants to eventually become part of Russia.

Only a complete idiot would think Russia is completely innocent, and are only defending their peacekeepers. Russia are defending their interests, but these interests spread much further than self-defence.
