Of course it is! Jesus taught that too look at a woman lustfully was equivalent with commiting adultery in your heart. I have to presuppose you are asking biblically or you would not care about "sin". This is a "no brainer".

To all the posters that said "No way, if it is, we're all toast". Wooooooooooosh over your heads guys! If you live by the law, you could be perfect except you told one little lie and you're still toast. All have sinned and fallen short. No one is righteous. The key is salvation in Christ, in which sin is forgiven.

Is masturbation a sin?

Of course it isn't a sin. It appears to some of the thumpers, that being HUMAN is a sin. Like your this big sin running around. We all are and only the "chosen" get to go wherever they think they are going. Why are they going? Are they somehow "less" sinful or they can ask Jesus for forgiveness each week, sin and then ask for forgiveness again....etc. until death.

Wack off all you want. These people on here playing God are the sinners, but don't forget, they can say they're sorry each week and then start over and over and over.......repeat until death.

The Bible never specifically mentions masturbation or states whether masturbation is a sin. There is no question, however, as to whether the actions that lead to masturbation are sinful. Masturbation is the end result of lustful thoughts, sexual stimulation, and/or pornographic images. It is these problems that need to be dealt with. If the sins of lust and pornography are forsaken and overcome - the problem of masturbation will become a non-issue.

The Bible tells us to avoid even the appearance of sexual immorality (Ephesians 5:3). I do not see how masturbating can pass that particular test. Sometimes a good test for whether something is a sin or not is whether you would be proud to tell others what you had just done. If it is something you would be embarrassed or ashamed about if others found out, it is very likely that it is a sin. Another good test is to determine whether we can honestly, in good conscience, ask God to bless and use the particular activity for His own good purposes. I do not think masturbation qualifies as something we can be "proud" of or can genuinely thank God for.

The Bible teaches us, "Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God" (1 Corinthians 10:31). If there is room for doubt as to whether it pleases God, then it is best to give it up. There is definitely room for doubt in regards to masturbation. "For whatsoever is not of faith is sin" (Romans 14:23). I do not see how, according to the Bible, masturbation could be considered glorifying to God. Further, we need to remember that our bodies, as well as our souls, have been redeemed and belong to God. "What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's" (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). This great truth should have a real bearing on what we do and where we go with our bodies. So, in light of these principles, I would definitely have to say that masturbation is a sin according to the Bible. I do not believe that masturbation is pleasing to God, avoids the appearance of immorality, or passes the test of God having ownership over our bodies.

GJIML....how's it going?

What does the Bible have to do with this discussion?

Question: are we human?

Okay...now, you say if we do something that is embarassing or that we are not proud of, it is a sin. Is this correct? So, how about when you pick your nose? Are you proud of that? Is that a sin? How about when you fart? Again, is it a sin?

The problem with all you thumpers again is, you are ashamed to be human or something. Or you feel that being human is somehow bad. God made us human. So, believe it or not, He doesn't mind when we act human. Humans masterbate. Most that say they don't, actually do. Many animals on the planet masterbate. Is this a sin? My dog has sex with stuffed animals (his form of masterbation). Is he a sinner?

Everyone: be human and enjoy yourselves!

LoL man, if you're so excited, than why don't you masturbate, in front of everybody on the street, just like you "pick your nose" and "fart" in public(despite that they can't see you picking your nose, nor hear you farting, cause either you turn your head and then pick your nose,or go away and fart and then return), go ahead, what are you waiting for, or let me guess?..You masturbate in public, you just put your hand inside your pocket
For our sake, don't try to be smart ....

P.S: I'm sick of those people who just pick us believers(christians) on every word, and wait for us for any kind of mistake...They're just "More Idiotic" then us, and yes we are all idiots, for we are all humans
You happy ? [PeaCe]

Well the way I think of it, why do guys masturbate? Because they have sexual urges and tendencies that they won't go away. Why do people have this sexual urges? Because they lust or desire sex. And well lust is a sin, thus masturbation should be consider a sin, but who knows if it is or isn't. In any case there are probably worse things you can than masturbation.

To have another perspective on this, some people consider sperm very sacred, in some culture its consider more valuable than blood, since it contain more spiritual energy. So while masturbating isn't wrong, it does no good wasting sperm.

However, recent studies shows that masturbating often keep us more "active" and potent in life, and it act as a good stress reliever. (But then again, the scientist who conducted these research were males.)

Anyways, if masturbation keeps you away from STD infested hookers or whores, then I say go for it, but may I suggest doing society a favor, and preserve what little morale or decency we have, just masturbate in moderation . I personally see nothing wrong with masturbation, except it just destroy our sense of morale as we our given in to our most basic instinct.

Skyblue,

You're assuming that women don't have sexual urges that they might want to give in to sometimes...we absolutely do. As for any of this...masturbation, sex, lust...all of this is sinful in the Christian world perhaps, and maybe also for other faiths, but in mine, the Pagan faith, none if it is considered wrong...we are human, with human urges and human habits, and there is not a damn thing wrong with pleasure, even indulgent sexual pleasure, if we're not hurting anyone else.

If fact, orgasm is considered a creative source of energy in some ways of working...read the Sigils thread and you will get a better idea of what I'm talking about. Forget sin....we were built do do this amongst other things...why would God make us with the bits to do it and then tell us not to? *That* would be cruel!

Please don't give me the temptation arguement either...there are many other, much worse behaviours that we can and do indulge in that we should stop before we make ourselves feel guilty over a little pleasure.

Desire and lust are two different things - I could desire to eat chocolate but I wouldn't lust after it would I?

LOL Since there is between 40 - 600 million sperm in ejaculate and only 1 makes it wouldn't you call the rest a waste??

However, recent studies shows that masturbating often keep us more "active" and potent in life, and it act as a good stress reliever. (But then again, the scientist who conducted these research were males.)
Even if males don't masturbate then they have wet dreams to rid themselves of sperm - don't know what this would be called in females (if they have such a thing). Masturbation like sex produces feel good endorphins and such like which can keep us healthy.

Why masturbate in moderation (I'm sure no-one goes at it 6 times a day unless their about 14 years old) and why would masturbation destroy any sense of morale?

LMAO. No way is it a sin. If it is, every male over the age of 14 is toast. I got to say though, that if it is a sin, well, I say God made us wrong then. We should of been taller and had shorter arms so we couldn't reach..........

Geez, why does everyone hate me!! lol J/K

Look, when I talked about my opinion about masturbation, I never intended to add the Jesus or Christian factor in it.

And maybe I wasn't clear why I think masturbation (could) destroy morality. I think as human we shouldn't give in to our basic impulse or desire (I guess freud would say ID), I believe there should be some sense of control. When we give in to one thing, we eventually give into another, then another, then before we know it, we lost our own grounding. I think through controlling small things like our sexual desire, we can control other behaviors or tendency.

Saying that, I never thought there was anything wrong with masturbation, other then it becoming a chronic addiction. If you what my religious standpoint on it, I believe religiously masturbation and sex is perfectly natural and can be healthy if done in moderation. I believe as people we need balance of activities in our lives.

But thats not even why I'm against masturbation, I think that if you could be do something better with your life, then sit in front of a computer and waste your life away. At least do something productive...don't tell me masturbation is productive, it doesn't do anything except bring satisfaction.

Now do you guys understand my point of view?

Anyways I still stand firm when I say, while masturbation relieves urges and desire, it can also invertedly expand those sexual urges as we slowly tell our mind its okay to have to urges and desire. And while people may be able to control themselves when their sober and find other methods to relieve themselves, when their under the influences, well thats a different story.

And why is everyone against me on the facts I've mention in my previous, its just facts that I've pick up over the years, I'm just sharing those facts, no point in getting a heart attack over it. It was never meant to support or hurt anyone standing on masturbation, I'm just providing information. geez....

And the image....well...i thought that was funny, so I posted it up...

Man I hate it when I have to explain myself...lol...it sucks......

Okay maybe about the masturbation and the sin part, but...the other stuff nope..buts just my interpretation, in the shoes of a Christian.

But the other stuff I mention aren't my opinion, like thedeal about a drop of semen being more valuable then a drop of blood. I believe the chinese proverb goes like: "a drop of semen is equal to ten drops of blood."

A quick google search, lead me to this link, which shows there may have been some truth to it:
www.pakspectator.com...

Though I'm not sure how much truth to the proverb.

Also where I mention masturbation is good for you, well, I can't find the news article where I read about it being a stress reliever, but about the it wasn't my opinion when I said there are some benefits to it:
news.bbc.co.uk...
www.livescience.com... (I know..the title...just read the last bit as well.)

See its not my opinion, its fact...well other peoples opinion...lol

The title reads: "Is masturbation a sin"
Once we mention "sin" we've already factored Jesus/Christian/Religon into the equation, since "sin" is a Religious concept. (In my opinon of course). However I think the OP was asking this question from a religous standpoint...? Were you OP?

I don't believe in Sin. I believe in Right and Wrong. I believe it is Right to help your fellow neighbours out when they need a hand. I believe it is wrong to take the life of another person etc...

I personally don't believe that it is Wrong to Masturbate. You're doing it to yourself, not anyone else. Are you hurting anyone else? Are you making depriving someone else of their dignity? Of their respect? The problem with masturbation, lies in the addiction to the "feelgood" response your body has to the end result, an orgasm. However, I don't believe that having an orgasm is wrong.

I think as human we shouldn't give in to our basic impulse or desire (I guess freud would say ID)

Freud also believed that everything revolved around sexual desire & wish fulfillment. Dreams in particular he associated with relating to our sexual desires. So is dreaming wrong? Men and Women BOTH become aroused during REM sleep = wet dreams.

I believe there should be some sense of control...

...Saying that, I never thought there was anything wrong with masturbation, other then it becoming a chronic addiction. If you what my religious standpoint on it, I believe religiously masturbation and sex is perfectly natural and can be healthy if done in moderation.

Agreed. Its all about Moderation. However, the term moderation is completely subjective to the individual basis. For me, having a glass of Red wine every day, might be considered moderation. But to you, having a glass once a week - could be moderation. It depends on each person individually. Some people like to have sex more than others, we all have different sex drives. I don't think its fair to determine when it is considered "too much", for people as a whole - as we are all different.

...don't tell me masturbation is productive, it doesn't do anything except bring satisfaction.

The definition of productive, is also subjective on an individual basis. I may not view sitting at the computer all day as being productive, but the person on the computer, probably differs in opinion. Who are we to judge what others classify as productive, and what isn't?

Merriam Webster's Dictionary's Definition of Produtive:

Main Entry: pro·duc·tive
Pronunciation: \prə-ˈdək-tiv, prō-\
Function: adjective
Date: 1612
1: having the quality or power of producing especially in abundance
2: effective in bringing about
3 a: yielding results, benefits, or profits b: yielding or devoted to the satisfaction of wants or the creation of utilities
4: continuing to be used in the formation of new words or constructions
5: raising mucus or sputum (as from the bronchi)

www.merriam-webster.com...

The only one that really pertains to this context, is number 3. Yielding REsults, Benefits, or Profits. For some people, perhaps, Masturbation is productive.

LoL man, if you're so excited, than why don't you masturbate, in front of everybody on the street, just like you "pick your nose" and "fart" in public

I'm sorry, is this supposed to support your stance on this particular topic? I realize you probably don't want my opinion, but, this statement, could have better supported your argument, had you not have been so sarcastic to EB. Perhaps instead of targetting EB for his name, you could have written: If you pick your nose in public, or fart in public, why wouldn't you masterbate in public? ...Hmm...I guess, the personal attack does add a different context to your statement.

The reason people don't do those things in public, is because there is a time and a place for them to happen. We've been taught that there are certain things that are socially acceptable, and things that aren't.

Indecent Exposure is what you probably get, for masturbating in public...which is probably part of why people don't do it. Picking your nose in public? I haven't heard of any cases going to trial lately...

Just some thoughts...
