Earthquake swarm picks up again in northern Nevada

www.msnbc.msn.com

RENO, Nev. - A months-long swarm of earthquakes picked up again Sunday as a string of minor temblors rattled Reno, causing downtown high-rises to sway and knocking items off walls and shelves.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or major property damage after about 20 minor quakes reported on the western edge of Reno over 12 hours ending about noon.

I hate that the residents of this area have been under so much stress lately, these died down and now 12 straight hours of shaking and rocking! I am also worried about this one in Greece, I haven't looked at a map yet, but I do hope this one is no where near Vesuvius!

A couple of more small ones have hit in the last hour, maybe the activity will slow down again as opposed to increasing in mag or numbers.

The last swarm kind of ended when the big China quake hit right? Or did it simply stop being reported? Hopefully this isn't a precursor to another disaster.

very interesting, major and minor quakes of significant magnitude are recorded left and right.

Has there been a significant increase in seismic activity in terms of quakes?

Im currently debating with myself if i should be a little worried and undergo at least a low level preparation.

your thoughts?

There are statisics posted here on ATS, thread called quake watch 2008, and yes there is increased activity. Volcanos too, there is one volcano going off that has been dormant for over 9000 years. Quake activity is normal in the California/Nevada area, but these swarms are not normal, something else is going on. My reference to Mt Vesuvius, Edgar Cayce (the sleeping prophet) had said that if Mt Vesuvius or Pelee begins activity that we are in for a rude awaking, the continents will split again.

You know! Your'e right Karl! The swarms abated for about a week before The Chinese 8.0.
Coincidence. Maybe, maybe not. I would not want to live in Nevada right now. Not without a great big prescription of valium.

well golly gosh - as was said in both the china AND iran threads - it MUST BE nuclear bomb tests gone wrong......

I don't believe that any of the quakes are being caused by nuclear bombs or current testing, however, Nevada does have an old test site, as well as several of the other areas that are having or are known to have activity. Coincidence or the effect of testing years later? Or is that possible?

I've heard from geologists who have been interviewed by the media, that these swarms of smaller magnitudes but greater quantity, may actually be helping to relieve a lot of pressure and stress that has been building up, rather than it all going at once. Still there is the potential that is a prelude to something more. Let's hope it's the former rather than the later. Earthquakes give me the creaps, but then so do tornadoes and big storms like the one I have up for my avitar.

I wonder how the folks over at say, Circus Circus, or Silver Legacy were during them? I mean I can just see people pausing just breifly and then turning back to the slot machine and pressing "max bet"!

I just hope that whatever mother nature decides to deal out, that casualties will be minimum, and hopefully nobody gets hurt.

The casualties will be plentiful . . . mark my words.

It is the birth pangs. We are reaching the end of an age.

Here in reno, (at the epicenters) we have known that the swarm has not ended, it SLOWED, but picked up everytime it goes silent. The news has not made any mention of them, till they pass 3.5, or we have 4 over 3.2 in less than 24 hours...
These quakes feel diferent than others, myaself and other locals who have felt these ongoing for months now, have noticed 3 distinct types of quakes coming from same area (and mind you there is NO active faults in this area) most are less than 10km which usually means volcanic, yet they are too powerful to be that... no answers from experts..

type 1 - you hear the "roar" and as it goes thruogh the house, everything shakes left and right.

type 2 - no noise, just fast shakes, kinda in a circle patter (like a pot of bioling water with a lid, as the steam moves the lid up and down, left and right.

type 3 - you hear a distinct "thunk" then the whole house shakes putting cracks in drywall.. these feel more up and down

The severity of these quakes makes a lot of people (especially from california) think we are little babies, but I have felt earthquakes in 3 diferent states, and they are all diferent, and a 2.0 CAN be felt miles away when the ground is full of rock... not soil like most of cali, where you need a 5.0 for people to notice. A lot of homes (mine included) have suffered damage, from the 5000+ quakes since feb. not large, but frequent.... then you get used to the silence at night, and then here we go again.....

It's shaking right now!

I've felt like 10 of these today sitting on my bed. This is nuts.
A lot of people here feel there's something weird going on. I've lived in the United States for 20 years, 13 of which was spent in Nevada, and never have I encountered earthquake activity like this. I used to live in LA too. I've felt a couple of good ones, nothing like these little ones here, but the little ones worry me.

This is absolutly incorrect, they are not releasing energy... here is a snippet from the article here.
EQ SWARM BIGGER THAN START

Just because people haven’t been feeling earthquakes doesn’t mean they haven’t been happening, Ken Smith, a seismologist with the Nevada Seismology Laboratory, said.

“We’re still in a period of time that the activity is higher than it was when it started,” Smith said.

The good news is that the rate of smaller quakes is lower than a month or two ago, Smith said. The bad news is that the smaller quakes are not releasing much of the built-up energy of the earth.

On the Richter scale, a full point in magnitude is equal to about 30 times the energy.
“You’d need about 900 magnitude 1 quakes to equal the energy released in a magnitude 3,” Smith said.

I just got back on the computer after a 3 day break, the quakes are getting larger off the oregon coast, and look like they are speading eastward across Nevada, California has a lot of activity too. Something is up.

These are small..but frequent.
So shallow that they aren't felt at all, if you are just a couple of miles away.
But the residents directly over the events..Well that's a different story.
Nerves are frazzled..and it doesn't help that a lot of them occur late at night, or early in the morning.

I was going to a Physical therapy clinic for a few weeks, up in that area.
My Therapist was telling me that some of her clients that live in the quake region, are coming in exhausted, muscles tight, nerves agitated. Many who were progressing well in their PT, have regressed. Some have doubled up on their appointments.

A local Geologist said that we may be experiencing the birth of a new Fault.

Uh, they had to invent the new term "earthquake swarm", so yeah, I'd say there has been an increase in seismic activity.

I find it rather intriguing that some of the recent earthquakes in the past 7 days continue to have a depth of 0 km. Seismologists, whats going on?!
