U.S. official: Missiles fired at Somalia terror target

www.cnn.com

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The United States on Monday used precision missiles to strike a "known terrorist target" in southern Somalia, a U.S. military official said.

The strike near Dhoobley, which is close to the Kenyan border, was aimed at a "facility where there were known terrorists" affiliated with East African al Qaeda operations, according to the official.

US has learnt its lessons from Mogadishu. That's why they're firing only missiles this time.

Rather kill more civillians than loosing soldiers..

Based on what happened last time when a thousand Somalis dead and many more wounded in urban combat for the deaths of 19 Americans on the ground. I would say its better to just fire missiles which would lessen civilian deaths.

Yes its a good way to test some new upgraded missiles. And if the terrorists still exist than drop a cluster or a napalm. This will definetly minimise civillian casualities.

the article says:

Washington accuses the Islamic movement of harboring fugitives from the al Qaeda terrorist network, including a suspect in the 1998 embassy bombings.

ok...
so, that means that the terrorists from Iraq and Afghanistan traveled ALL the way to Somalia to hide... riiight... like theres not somewhere closer they could hide...

We have different estimates.

hotzone.yahoo.com...

Duguf tells me from that day forward a kind of blind, raging anger built up in Somalis, culminating in the Battle of Mogadishu three months later in which 18 American soldiers and as many as 600 Somalis died.

This October, 12 years will have passed since that ill-fated battle. Time has done little to blunt feelings here though, especially among Maria Osman and her neighbors. Their anger now seems as sharp and unforgiving as the cactus needles that protect the memory and remains of Black Hawk Super Six One.

www.time.com...

The International Committee of the Red Cross estimated 200 Somalis had died in the battle, and hundreds of wounded piled into hospitals that in some cases had no plasma or other supplies to treat them.

www.pbs.org...

How many people died, civilian and military, on the Somali side on October 3rd?

The exact number of militia men who died on that day is 133, 74 with special training.

And civilian casualties?

That's almost uncountable, because the place where the fire took place is one of the busiest sectors of Mogadishu and people were not even taking cover. Each bullet fired in one direction might have killed four or five or six persons, because the place is very populous.

In conclusion it was many.

Many Al Qaeda terrorists are from Africa, so I don't know why you think its skeptical to believe in a world that is globalized.

totally agree - no one anywhere actually has any real idea of the number that died - but all sides seem to agree , it was a mix of militiamen and civilians (like more civilians when urban fighting) and a total figure of dead + wounded of around 500 is likely , if we disregard the sky high figure of 7000 by US estimates - converseely 19 US dead with 74 wounded ,

but like you say - still lots
(

"Al Qaeda terrorists "

thats so 2002 - notice how there not even mentioned now in the `war of terror` and when it is its passed over quickly.

Bad with sarcasm. Can't deny the fact that Al Qaeda is around the world. What? Can't imagine terrorists taking flights on planes? Expect them to travel in caravans using camels?
