Can Muslim smear hurt Obama?

www.blog.newsweek.com

Over the past few months, it's become clear that there are some shady people out there bent on spreading the claim----completely, inarguably, demonstrably false--that Obama is a "crypto-Muslim Manchurian candidate." It started with a set of untraceable viral emails, which say that "Barack Hussein Obama has joined the United Church of Christ in an attempt to downplay his Muslim background" and ask "Can a good Muslim become a good American?" (the answer, they add, is no). And it has continued with trolls like "HolyRoller," a monomaniacal individual now infecting the "He's One of Us Now" comment board, where he's busy posing questions like "To all you Obama supporters: Is he Shiite or Sunni?" and lamenting "how foolish we have become" now that "a large segment of our population wants one of the [Islamic] devils to be their President"--despite the fact that my article had nothing whatsoever to do with Obama's religious background. The Obama campaign has been waging a determined, low-intensity war against the smear since January 2007, and the candidate himself has repeatedly weighed in. His typical response? "The American people are, I think, smarter than folks give them credit for."

This untruth has been circulating for a while, so hopefully by reading this you can get the facts on whether Obama is Muslim or not.

Yes, Obama is a closet muslim.

It's obvious "Obama" name is a muslim name. You wouldn't want to have a muslim running as a president of u/s, would you?

Well, no more than I would a Christian
. But such is the vacuum of any form of secularism in the US.

I have read several sources that state that he was a born a Muslim and practiced Islam but converted to Christianity around the time he married Michelle Robinson.

How factual this is, I dont know but I will try and dig up the websites.

Before we crucify the man prior to electing him, why not look at "him"?

He seems to be fairly moderate at least compared to Hillary and he is at least far more truthful then McCain....

I care somewhat less about what he "used" to be, then for what he "will" be if elected...

Now everyone knows I am a Republican, but that choice has been removed from me this go round and I see Obama as possibly the most "un-harmful" choice.

Hillary is pure Socialist and McCain, well who knows what he stands for...

Oh yeah, what ever happened to separation of church and state?

Semper

You're a Republican? No way...really? Never woulda guessed
.

But you are correct, of the three remaining he seems to be, at the moment, the best remaining choice. That's not saying a great deal, since his main opposition is Hillary Clinton, and John McCain.

Before we crucify, let's have him actually do something wrong, eh? My only real issue with him is a real lack of experiance, and a bad, bad habit of saying things will change without actually specifying how he's gonna do that.

Semper a Republican....
. I slay me
.

Can Muslim smear hurt Obama?

Unfortunately, with how the country is going, I could go around saying Obama has a rash on his shoulder, and that would affect people's judgements.

Indeed...it is unfortunate that this is the case....however this type of rumour reminds me of the swiftboating tactics that I DEPLORE....and there is nothing wrong with trying to keep the facts out there. If this info will correct only one persons opinion based on facts then it's worth it.

BTW the other day a teacher at my sons high school led a discussion about this and she failed to research any facts, leaving some students to believe that Obama was a muslim and did not salute the flag.....this is the sort of crap that bugs me the most...if educators can't or won't get the facts and continue to reinforce propaganda, then we are doomed...

Did you say anything or do anything?

If I found out about my kid getting taught bad information at school, I would say something to either the teacher or principal.

Good for you. Education in America is bad enough without deliberate (?), misinformation being handed out to a captive audience. It might have been an honest mistake, those happen too. Glad to hear you're going to find out which.

Yes indeed. Good to hear.

Amazing that this teacher is paid to educate people, yet cannot seem to educate herself.

I guess this rumor will never die. There have been how many threads about this on ATS alone?

Even if Obama was once a Muslim before he "converted" to Christianity (which he wasn't and that's been proved many times over so I won't do it again)--how does that disqualify him from the presidency? Do people really believe he will carry on jihad against America once he's president?

As P.T. Barnum once said, "You'll never go broke by underestimating the intelligence of the public."

Fact of the matter is, people are tired of crap. For all the years and years us here at ATS have wondered when our people will "wake-up", well the common person is now.

The fact is the population has reached the point where more voters honestly look past religion/race and just and want to see a new policy govering Americas future. It already is visible in the polls, and when Obama wins the ticket, let us hope Hillary has the courtasy to accept an equally respectable position at his side. I honestly believe Obama would want her as Vice-President.

Yeah, desperation will cause a lot of crazy things to happen. I honestly don't think Obama would have had an inkling of a chance before ol' GW.

And I personally do NOT want to see Hillary there at all. You can't trust this lady as far as you can throw her, PLUS her husband in a Hummer.

Well I am sorry to see you are still in denial about the fact that you and your supporters are outnumbered by those that actually want positive change in the world, and not irresponsible fiscal and foreign policies just becuase "they can".

I just hope you do not support his attempted assassination, because some evil ignorant people will try and fail.

Because some of us, and I certainly qualify, don't trust Hillary or Bill Clinton, we're somehow against change? How does that work? What, is Hillary the only agent of change that America has to look forward to? Then we are truly up the creek of excrement and the guy who rented us the boat has called time. Just out of curiosity...where is the support of an attempted assassination come into play? Given the rancorous nature of US politics there have only been, let's see, Mckinley, Lincoln, Garfield, Kennedy; so four successful assassination attempts, Ford (twice), Reagan; and three unsuccessful attempts upon sitting presidents, and two on people running/had run for president (Wallace and Robert Kennedy), not a bad track record as these things go. I've yet to see any one advocating any such thing herein. Can't say I've seen the same thing regarding Bush...

No one is going to kill Obama. Or Clinton for that matter. Clinton, hopefully, will fade into well deserved obscurity as soon as she loses the nomination...her overweening pride, IMHO, will not allow her to accept the Vice Presidential nomination.

You miss the point. I'm actually FOR Obama. I was just stating my opinion of recent happenings.

I'm NOT for Hillary.

There. I hope that clears things up a bit.
