It allows us to see how many people our threads are reaching, and is especially handy when you make a podcast, to see how many people are showing an interest in what you're doing.

Please, bring the views column back, if only for podcasts.

I always liked the views column, just to get an idea of if my thread was being read or not. I might not get replies, but at least I'd know people were reading it.

Yes, I find it is a very handy feature. But as SkepticOverlord had pointed out in another thread there were issues with server load with the current server configuration.

www.abovetopsecret.com...

Perhaps with the next (?) server upgrade it can be activated again???

I forgot they were gone and haven't missed them really.

But think about it, there are thousands and thousands of members and thousands and thousands of lurkers - your thread WILL get looked at.

Podcast much?

It's a great way of gauging your reach. How do you know your hard work is being looked at, if you don't have the proof? Blind faith? I'd rather leave that to the religious thanks.

at the risk of sounding rude :

snip

" thread views " are just that - a tally of how many times a browser window has opened on that page

the ATS tally was not IP sensetive - it did not diffentiate " unique visitors " snip

pressing refresh 100 times would advance the tally by +100

it really means nothing

i do not care how many people read , or more normally do not read my threads / posts

though i admit i do occasionally get a warm fuzy when a member i respect quotes my thread or idea in another thread

and naturally the imp in me smiles when a post i have made provokes an idiot to send me an abusive PM or other frothy fit

but other than that - i just get on with the job @ hand

if page views are so important to you - PM me - i can set up a script to refresh my browser between 20 and 100 times / minute snip

hug ??

Do what Dave Rabbit does and tell people to "Flag the Mutha" and if the "mutha" gets flagged consider your podcast looked at.

Yes ignorant, when I have spent weeks writing and recording music to be hosted someplace on the web, it matters to me. It matters to me how many people are viewing my hard work.

Looking at that pathetic excuse for a post, it occurs to me that perhaps instead of flaming people's reasonable requests, you should go back to school.

No offence.

We will discuss the topic and not each other from this point on, or warns will begin.

Lets get back to this now, please.

I agree that the views column was an interesting asset from time to time, and I see where Implosion is coming from on this. But I can't help but be slightly satisfied to no longer notice that my threads had 200+ views without a damn reply. At least now I can naively believe that nobody has had the opportunity to read it yet.

A false sense of security of nothing else.

I can understand both points here. When I do a podcast most people don't reply. It's not like I have that much in the way of anything insightful to say, and people just listen and that makes me happy. I do wonder if people are listening to the show or not. but I guess a variation on Flag the Mutha will have to do. least I would get a kind of vote system going.

And on the other hand it would be nice to see how many people listened in to the show without them having to go through the work...

I think that SO knows what needs to be done and I hope that we can subtly encourage our podcast fans to Flag the Mutha for us so we know that they listen in.

We're working on some better stat integration with the podcasts... in the mean time, this has always been available:

That's news to me. Still, not half as handy is it?

It lets you know how many people (that dont post) are interested in the subject. I liked it and I miss it. Why take it away anyway, was there not enough room on the page?

It's much better than views... you can actually see all the downloads of your podcasts, included through podcast clients that use the feeds, or our podcast player.

We need to integrate a means of parsing that data for our podcasters... but at least we have it.

There are deffinately some changes going on with ATS. In my opinion, some of the changes are not so good (such as removing the 'views' column. After posting a new thread, it was fun to check back periodically to see if anyone looked at it or if it was being totally ignored. I guess nwo we'll never know unless someone posts a comment to the thread) and some which are good (like the removal of the ATS 'banner' at the top and bottom of a persons ATS Blog - makes me feel like I am a professional blogger
).

But overall, I still like ATS and will continue to visit!

So why did they get removed anyways?

What Happened to the Views Column?

In reality, the "views" tracking is indeed an item that is a "luxury" and was beginning to introduce some problems.

As most people who work with high-volume technology are aware, simple database writes can often take up to four times the processor cycles as read queries, even read queries that touch on more data than a simple one-column update write... such as incrementing the view counter for a thread.

I ran a test by removing the view increment for guests, and db server load immediately decreased... so now it's implemented across all sites and we're no longer tracking views. You may notice other very large boards have adopted a similar approach.

The issue of incrementing a view-tally on every page load is not an issue on small-traffic and/or small-size sites. But as our threads table continues to grow in size with more than 262,000 topics, it has become an increasingly processor-heavy operation to open the large table, read the current views, write the views+1, then close the large table each time a thread is viewed. Now consider that our threads are getting close to 200,000 views a day, and you start to see our problem.

So, now that we're not incrementing a view-counter, views are no longer shown.

You shouldn't have to "flag the mutha" or tell people to "flag the mutha" because no one "flags the mutha" especially new people who have no idea how to "flag the mutha" nor why they should "flag the mutha" and thus there is no "mutha flagging"...

I agree with the OP bring back the views collumn, it was much better with them here. By the way, I esperienced no server problems, no slow loading untill the new changes went into effect, since then pages have loaded slow ect. Just me? I dunno.

I dun wanna "flag the mutha"
