Oops moments

Mondogiwa started a thread in the Aircraft forum on "oops moments" and
funny stories about pilots and such.

I thought a thread about the same idea, but from the ground-pounder point
of view would be fun.

I'm ex-Army, and was trained as a turret mechanic for the M-60 and M-1
tanks. Here are some of my experiences :

Taking a coke can, punching some holes through the sides with a knife and
sticking on the end of a sabot round sounds just like a bottle-rocket, when
fired from the M-60 main gun.

Loading a bottle of vodka in the breach, followed by a HEAT round creates
a beautiful blue flame from the main gun. Shuts the range down for a few
hours, too.

Stupid CDAT moment :
While training new tankers on the M-1, on a range at Fort Polk, I got a big
surprise.
I'm called to a tank for a misfire. No biggie. I grab my meter and octopus
cables, head to the tank and climb in.
Half-way through the loaders hatch, the round cooks off, and I'm deafened.
It was a hang-fire, not a mis-fire. I chewed the TC, until a range officer
pulled me from the tank. Couldn't hear a thing for days.
Scared the bejeesus out of me.

Anyway, it would be cool for others to post some oops moments for the
rest of us to read.

Thanks,
Lex

If the World has ever seen a finer "oopsie" than this, then I would like to see it:

Wow.

Noone here was a ground-based G.I., that has an "oops" moment ?

Guess I'm still an odd-ball.

Don't feel bad Lexion. Mondogiwa at one point decided to rename the thread "Zaphod's Greatest Hits" because a large portion of the stories were mine.

After performing a boarding in the Pacific, one of the Seamen cleared his .45 over the rail and the slide sprung off, landing in 5k feet of water

Or, nothing funnier than seeing Coast Guard officers walking around the ship with hefty bags in their pockets during heavy seas, their own personal barf bags lol I never got sea sick so i couldnt relate

I may be wrong, but is that streamers from a parachute in pic 2? If so, perhaps it was a particularly windy day.

I love the airdrop mishap vid here

Leopard 2 Vs. a Mercedes Benz, guess who got hurt?

2005 Battle Griffin exercize had a nasty saldo of traffic accidents, 2 hits to car by Leos, a house wrecked by a CV9040 and a four car collision in a mountain road (my car was 2m away when we managed to stop it)

I had a slight ND* with a GPMG.

4 rounds down range as everyone else hit the deck.

The thing that were said about my mother!!

Still the 2 mile run in full NBC suits & respirators in the midday heat was fun! Ever vommed in your gas mask? Not recommended.

*The Brits don't do 'accidental discharge' (at least with weapons) their all 'negligent'
