so i have this incredibly annoying noise in my left ear only. it is tinnitus and i saw a specialist and he says it may be the onset of otosclorisis... (arthritis in the ear)
i do occasionally hear this high pitched tone that you describe but i think pretty much everyone does at one time or another..

so yer the noise in my ear drives me insane and i'm waiting to see a specialist to get a second opinion..
some nights i don't think i'll ever get to sleep with it constantly in my ear and nothing seems to settle it.
butttt i don't really have any experiences with these "other" "variously pitched" tones you're describing..

I have tintinitus but it was cuased by medicine I took for a ear infection. A combo of Musinex and Amoox-Clav. It dies down after I am off it for a few days after the infection clears up.

In my case, I've been with different rock bands since 1995 and yeah, you can say I have that too. It's not 24/7 though. Am planning to have it checked up.

I have it too, and it can be annoying.
I checked my blood pressure last week, and was normal.
Why is it so common? I see alot of threads about it and alot of theories as to what the cause is.

Tinnitus cure is a step closer (woo hoo!
)

Link

Well it's basically that they have narrowed down the cause to....

This uncontrolled nerve activity causes the noises that plague people with tinnitus and appears to be down to gene changes, Neuroscience reports.

And it raises the hope of treatment by silencing nerve activity, experts say.

We are extremely excited about the significant progress this research has made Dr Ralph Holme of RNID Although the studies carried out by the Australian researchers were in guinea pigs - the animal rather than the human variety - they believe their findings will ultimately help people with tinnitus.

So fellow suffers, make of that what you will. I know my self treatment regime of banging my head against a wall does come with certain side effects... And does nothing at all to relieve the tinnitus
(similar results obtained in my study of consuming excessive amounts of alcohol)

This sound rally odd, but sometimes i can hear the electricity in household objects, my parents think im mad, when i say the static noise from the tv is giving me a head ache, they think im really odd. Its nice to know other people have the same ideas, maybe there are waves being sent to our brians from outer space and they are making our hearing go strange???

Hi there I'm new here, but decided to sign on when I read your post! No it doesn't sound odd at all, I have the same thing! It goes further for me though. With the sound turned off I can hear that the TV is on. (typically, someone is watching the tele with the sound turned all the way down so as not to disturb sleepers like say, in the middle of the night.) And I can tell also tell where the person is in the room because the person blocks the sound of the TV! So if I am in another room I can "hear" that your TV is on and I know if you're sitting to the left, center or right of it because the sound is not in that part of the room! We use to have a television that we'd have to turn the sound down every evening before we went to bed. The cable would update it's cable box contents once in a while during the night and for some reason this would trigger the TV to turn itself on which was terrifying if the sound was left as is! lol! I could hear if this had happened if I was awake and I'd come downstairs to turn it off. If it was really late there would be nothing but that creepy poltergist static. (Everyone hated this TV ha!) When I was younger I used to be able to hear people as well, making it possible to go directly to them in a large building, or neighborhood. It never once crossed my mind as a psychic thing, it definitely has to do with sound, people make their own noise. I'm happy to know someone else has this! Do you find that new appliances are harder to hear now? I have a flat screen and it doesn't make the same sound. Or maybe I just got old Ha!

I have tinnitus. The ringing is constant. However, sometimes it turns into a high pitched whine for several minutes that drowns out all other sound. I also have a problem with being in a totally quiet room. I have to have some type of background noise or i will hear a crackling sound like someone playing with cellophane. The doctor says this is from too much, too loud rock and roll in teh 80's and 90's.

The only good side is that I can hear when my kids have their tvs on late at night even when the volume is off. (i.e. they turn them back on after I have tucked them into bed). The docs said something about the tinnitus lets me hear the whining pitch of Televisions and computer monitors. The sound is so loud to me that it wakes me up..My teens hate it but it has saved my power bill on many occasions lol

OK - just thought I'd add an update here as I had a bit of a 'non development'

So about 2 months ago I was referred to a doctor with a 'special interest' in this condition, he was very interesting and basically he wanted me to have a hearing test and an MRI - the hearing test went fine, I still have above average hearing and all that, this seems to be strange for the doctors, they expect people with tinnitus to have some level of hearing loss? - well, nope, I even get told I have hyperaccousis

Well the MRI was really specifically to look for a potential tumor on the 8th nerve, that would be an auditory nuroma really, a very unlikely result, but worth checking out considering my symptoms have been consistent all throughout my medical history since child hood... An auditory nuroma is a tumour in the the cells that wrap and surround the nerve, that nerve conveys the signals for hearing and also balance - the nuroma in that case is 8/10 times benign in that it is not cancer, but as it grows it does cause pressure on the surrounding structures, there is a facial nerve right up close, so in the later stage facial numbness on one side of the face is common, also vertigo.

But! - the MRI apparently showed that I did not have this problem.... So I am still none the wiser as to why I have the symptoms I have.

Guess I'll keep pestering the doctors
