The US Goverment has done work with the use of nuclear engines for propulstion. The N.E.R.V.A project Nuclear Engine Rocket Vehicle Applications And had some success with the project as for weapons use I think It could be use in some future space based laser systems for power generation there not going to power those things with solar panels or be refueling them after a the run out of chemical fuel for power

There were plans to use a nuclear reactor to power the magnetic accelerators in a railgun. You would ned one to acelerate those slugs to the speeds they're talking about.

You may want to do some research on Tesla. He was an amazing inventor early in the last century who did some work on energy projection weapons among other things. I think much of his research was buried by the government.

Question, what do you think powers long term space exploration craft ie voyager ??? A small nuc reactor.

A nuclear reactor primarily does what ? give off heat.

Can you focus thermal energy ? Yes

Is it effective as a weapons system ? No

Why not ? because heat diffusion in ambient air

Could it be used along with another "carrier" medium in a weapon system ? Possibly but the technical requirments needed to do so makes the resulting weapon system very inefficient when compared to comparable platforms.

So using the output of a nuclear reaction in a why other then providing either thermal conversion or propulsion is ineffecient use of the energy output.

a gram or so piece of pure americium241, plutonium 239, uranium235, or uranium 233 (the list of fissionable materials go on) fissioned very quickly inside of a very strong electromagnet/coil type thing would shoot powerful neutrons out both open ends of the coil. now if you used seperate coil at one end, ions like argon, neutrons, protons, and other particles would shoot out the open end and could destroy whatever they are focused on using the magnetic fields.
