Picking a best gun is kind of broad isint it? How about something like the best caliber? Personally I think the 30-06 is the best round, and when coupled with a good gun like a Remmington 700 or Winchester Model 70, you have an amazing setup. Hands down the 30-06 is the most versatile round ever, and has killed every concievable animal you can hunt on the planet.

I've always liked the novelty ones, where you pull the trigger and the flag with *bang* pops out.

I'm also quite fond of those big sniper rifles that were taking out iraqi troops from a mile away or some fansastic distance. BOOM, they go. That put a grin on my face. I bet somebody here knows the one I mean, they were quite distinctive.

My opinion is that the:
Bofors AK5B - "scoped" version
is the better infantry weapon ever...

or maybe the shortened version ?

Bofors AK5D

Zzub > I do believe you are thinking of the Battett M82 series of rifles firing the .50 BMG round. Yeah, they are quite impressive, especially the fact that for as large a round as they fire, they are supposed to only have the recoil of a 12 Gauge shotgun!

Specifications

Caliber .50 BMG (12.7 X 99mm)
Chamber Chambered for commercial and MATCH ammunition
Operation Semi-Automatic - Short Recoil Cycle
Barrel Length 29 inches (73.67 cm)
Rifling Twist 1 turn in 15 inches (38.1 cm)
Rifle Weight 28.5 pounds (12.9kg)
Overall Length 57 inches (144.78 cm)
Disassembled Length 38 inches (96.52 cm)

Hey, that's the ones, thanks! In my mind, that is so impressive. As you said, the size of the round and the little recoil and the range of them.

I'd love a go on one of those!

The kick on the M82 is much harder than a 12 Gauge!
I believe its 110 Lbs of recoil and that is while using the bipod. Don't even bother trying to fire it in a standing position. You'll probably break your shoulder.

Still an impressive weapon with over 11,000 ft/lbs of muzzle energy
.

But damn, 13kg...

Lol, I would never have imagined it was! I'm more used to a .22 calibre gun. Nearly no kick at all. I'm just surprised at the sheer power of a modern rifle.

Damn, Seems Barrett "claims" the M82A1 as having that of a 12 gauage on their site, but I will have to agree that it has to be more given the overall size of the bullet. I guess I wont ever know unless I splurge and buy one to shoot, course the price of ammo for them is insanity, something like 7$ a round!

I have the write up on it from American Rifleman. I'll see if I can find it when I get home.
Not only is the ammo rediculously expensive but the rifle itself goes for about $9000. Yikes!
I can't really see much need for one unless you hunt armor plated deer from 2 miles away anyhow.

Don't cry.... The .50 machine gun barrel has a weight of 12.7 Kg.

How about narrowing it down to categories:

(All of these weapons have stats in other threads
)

Best Assault Rifle: AKS-74m
Best Shotgun: M3 Semi-Auto 12 Gauge
Best Handgun: Desert Eagle "Big-boomer" .50 AE
Best Sniper Rifle: M82A1A (M82 Series)

This basically sums it up, all of these are excellent weapons, and they all deserve the respect

EDIT: Also, I have to disagree with the statement that says the P-90 is the best gun ever...for a few reasons, it is no use at longe range combat, the recoil is horrible, and it is as loud as hell.
It can be useful at close range, but for that, just get a shotgun, takes people off their feet :/

Single bullet fired from M82 has 3-4 times as much energy as a SLUG fired from 12 gauge shotgun..

So naturally, the recoil is also much more powerful..
