Two seperate ships have witnessed a newly formed island near Fiji. They both had spotted floating pumice which is often associated with the formation of volcanic islands. This along with occasional steam and lava ash led them to view a one mile diameter sized volcanic island.

www.cnn.com
The crew of the Maiken, a yacht that left the northern Tongan islands group of Vava'u in August, reported on their Web log on August 12 that they saw streaks of light, porous pumice stone floating in the water -- then "sailed into a vast, many-miles-wide belt of densely packed pumice."

They posted photos of huge "pumice rafts" that they encountered after passing Tonga's Late island while sailing toward Fiji.

"We were so fascinated and busy taking pictures that we plowed a couple of hundred meters into this surreal floating stone field before we realized that we had to turn back," wrote a crewman identified only as Haken.

The next day they spotted an active volcanic island, Haken wrote.

He said they could see the volcanic island clearly. "One mile in diameter and with four peaks and a central crater smoking with steam and once in a while an outburst high in the sky with lava and ashes. I think we're the first ones out here," he reported.

For anyone that studies volcanism this is extremely exciting news. Never ceases to amaze me how our 'Mother Earth' continues to create and move land masses. I would love to see some of the floating 'pumice rafts' that at times can be 19 miles wide (30 kilometers).

The Donald Trump "joke" aside I love things like this...it reminds us of the fact that we live on a living breathing planet and apparently such wonderful places like ours are rarer than rare.

WOW,

Pretty much sums it up for me.

Would this be considered an incredible event?

How long would it take this to become an actual island. Not so much vegetation or inhabitants, but in regards to the formation being complete.

Just another thought,

I'm assuming that this is caused by an underwater volcanic eruption which 'grows' upon itself as it unleashes molten rock into the water. If my assumption is correct,

Does this happen often? It would seem like it would be almost a regular occurrence in some areas.

Inquisination ( i may just 'coin' that phrase, lol )

Actually its fairly common...there are one or two in the north Atlantic that have formed in my lifetime...Krakatoa has a habit of rebuilding itself after it blasts itself to smithereens...the current incarnation is over a 1,000 ft tall and growing and of course there is Hawaii which is constantly growing. I think there are one or two in the southern ocean as well but I could be wrong.

It also happened in 14 November 1963 (hey, it's its birthday soon), just south of Iceland. A new island was born, Surtsey. You can study it to compare with this new island. Surtsey is still there, 43 years later. Surtsey was 2.7 km² at the most. However, it seems to be disappearing. Last year it was only 1.4 km² in size.

I always wondered about things like this, I mean finding new land. I would like to see there be land created, but instead of a volcano island, a new land mass from a shift in plates (doesnt have to be big just isolated.

My reason for that is if we have an isolated island, nothing on it yet, we could moniteer it and see what happens over time. What starts to grow, will it become a home for something, if so what? over time (many many years, like 100's) we could see how things form from nothing maybe. Just a thought.

not like we will last that long because our self destructive behavior, but hypothetically.

The Secret Lives of Venus
posted on 13-9-2006 at 07:25 PM (post id: 2484476) - single REPLYQUOTE

... While attempting to Decode the symbolism in 9/11, I noticed a connection to venus.

The north world trade tower stood for 42 minutes, the south world trade tower stood for 56 minutes.

Suva, Fiji is located in the southern hemisphere, Venus will be in the northern hemisphere on June 6, 2012.

While doing a search for 42 56 on google, I came across this.

Suva 04:42:56 11

Apparently at 4 hours 42 minutes and 56 seconds, on June 6 2012 venus will be at the External Sun Egress in Suva, Figi. From what I can gather that is point at which Venus and the Sun part ways after Venus finishes travelling across the surface of the sun, as viewed from earth.
